Goooood afternoon Al, Gina, Olivia, and Lumnah Acres friends😊 Ariel and Eric at Simple Living Alaska, started heating their chicken coop in the winter after moving further north, and the egg production has been going really well, better than expected. It may be safe to say that it is not just the hours of light chickens get in the winter, but also the temperatures they are exposed to that affects egg production.

Miss the old coop with all the license plates that several of us sent in (me being one) It was fun to be a part of it! Miss seeing the animal chores and interacting and cooking, along with the construction. The animals for the daily grounding and then your construction for learning, improving and moving forward and then the food prep preserving, more learning, and last, the meal- reminding us of what all this is for. Was very inspiring.❤️ Did you take anything from your last place? Are you selling or renting your old place? Miss your greeting " gooood morning modern steaders" what happened to stop you from using your cheerful iconic greeting to us? God bless❤️

Great idea with the hardware cloth Al. You are so right, we thought our new winter chicken coop was secure and a weasel got in and killed two of our hens. Found the spot he came in and it was just a little slit just smaller than an inch. Lesson learned. Fortunately, (that has been a few years back) we haven't had any more trouble. When you live in the middle of timber and creeks/ponds, you have all sorts of critters running around. We live in an area much like yours. We love it, however, when making homes for our animals, we have to be mindful of other critters around too.

Hahahahaha Sam you’re like a kid wanting snow to be outta school 😂 Years ago I drove tractor trailer and delivered furniture to people’s homes in Long Island and the whole country actually. But been to LI a few times it’s nice out there! Certainly liked it better than NYC I hated that place. I was in NYC making deliveries the week before 9-11 and was in Indianapolis when the planes hit the II Twins. I wanted to cry and had a feeling of anger and sadness like I’ve never had before! Had unloaded furniture out of tractor trailer and was taking a new living room in a girls house and she said come quick and we stood in her living room staring at the TV in Utter disbelief 😳😲😱😢 I think we all know exactly where Was was on 9-11 and was all effected by that. I was in upstate NY delivering the week after 9-11 also. The amount of Dump trucks working 24 hours a day from ground zero going out to LI was just unreal. God Bless

When it comes to designing space for the outdoor chicken run, count your birds and for each one about 8 square feet is good. I don't know if hawks and other predatory birds are a problem there, so I would recommend surrounding the run on all sides and in the ground with tight mesh wire. What was used for the vent screen is a good type. Just remember to dig down 6 to 8 inches and put the wire there facing outwards in the shape of a backwards L .

Spring Fever ... yeah i've been making vegetable garden plans and i have half a dozen projects i need to get done... some just a day or two and others will take a week or so.. they all add up though especially when other things happen to distract you. Hope you're all well.

After automatic Chicken door leads outside, feeders and waterers on side near Pigglets area, yes a Pregnant Sow ! And egg layer dividers, that include eggs to roll where wall was just built today, keeping eggs clean ( But I would have put wall up today at angle - pitch { not level } for eggs to be easily gathered where Man-door size door to Chicken Coop needs be ) basically Chickens door needs not to be as wide as doorway into Pig Nursery Stall, plus small size egg gathering doors for standing in middle of shop to fill egg basket ! Broody Hen boxes for year-round chicks from eggs, on same new wall ! 2 rooms for hatchlings ( on floor, in middle ) to segregate newborn chicks from adolescents chicks like before ( step-over divider) ! Chicken Stall door made of Chicken-Fence material but raised that requires step-over-thru access, ie. instead of threshold about 12" or more step-over ! Chicken Perchs added where full grown Chickens Behinds are never over above Chickens perched ! I would rethink the wall built today, having nesting boxes take space from area hay is to be stored !

have you thought of putting an I beam in the roof with an electric hoist for any lifting stuff in the barn? you could also add storage in the roof accessible by the hoist or ladder. i also think you should remove a few of the roofing panels and replace them with polycarbonate versions for natural light.

We have the pole on the outside of the barn if we need to lift anything heavy bit we also have the tractors for that too

Those roof trusses don't look strong enough to support anything like that and plastic goes hard and brittle after a time. There are some things you shouldn't make out of plastic.
@chrisoakey9841
@chrisoakey9841 3 ай бұрын
@@derekbarratt the roof trusses individually but when you spread the load over multiple trusses with a beam, they will hold a roof up. or snow and wind loads, so a few bags of grain hoisted into the rafters, no worries. as for plastics, if they are UV treated they last a long time. like on almost every fighter since the 1960's. the older roofing plastics weren't treated well so fail like that. modern ones will still eventually go there just as tin will rust. the thicker sheets last longer just like the steel.
@derekbarratt
@derekbarratt 3 ай бұрын
I must admit that I didn't like the look of those trusses the moment I saw them. They seemed far too flimsey. In England we don't have much home grown wood. Henry the 8th saw to that when he had everything cut down to make ships. Most of our wood now arrives from somewhere where the trees grow the quickest and are sheathed in plastic, (to retain the moisture and prevent distortion) so we have a lot of shrinkage and twisting as they dry out despite being kiln dried. Both Al and Gina are now almost middle aged and wont want to be replacing roofing sheets when they are in their seventies.

Helped a neighbor rebuild a new barn after loosing the old one to a tornado. He had the hardware for the doors but was concerned that it would get bent in a big storm. Bought a ton of construction sand, used feed bags (plastic/nylon), and burlap bags. Made the burlap bags smaller by my wife. Resized the feed bags with a heat sealer. Put 50-60 pounds in each bag and sealed both the inner feed bag and sewed the open end of the burlap bag. They went at the bottom of the big doors to make a seal and provide extra support. His children were in ag progress program raising projects. The bags helped seal openings down by the ground. One thing he did in the chicken area was put down a wood floor at the interior wall. Chicks tended to use this area in colder weather and the farmer claimed better yields. Just an idea.

Just as a reference, if you expect to keep out deermice, you need to go with the 5 mm webbing instead. Done some testing with livecaught mice and a young deermice can easily squeese through a circular 7 mm hole when motivated by peanutbutter
