Because of Crosby's post-injury success with the Conn Smythes and Cups, a lot of people forget that 2011-2016 there was an insane amount of talk about Crosby being another "what if?" situation where yeah he's great but what if he didn't get injured. Kind of like what happened with Lemieux
@davidcortez2224

Yup because Crosby would had have a better career just like Lemieux but his injuries were cause by other players and not cancer. It should make people think about what they want in the sport. Violence or talent?

My favorite thing about Sid is how private he has kept his personal life. He isn't on social media talking about politics or preaching how you should live your life on facebook. He leads by example, and I love that about him. And in a close second is how he does good things for people with no cameras involved. I'm from Pittsburgh, grew up here watching him throughout my entire childhood, and the amount of awesome local stories about him that you'd never hear anywhere else is just crazy.

I completely agree. We missed the peak Crosby era. Maybe he wouldn't have put 150 like Mcdavid, but he was more complete than him and he could've put 2-3 seasons more of 100+ points, probably even 2-3 seasons of 130 points. He would sit around 1700 career points right now I'm pretty sure. The only one I see right now who can achieve the 2000 points mark is Mcdavid, if he stays healthy and put a lot of 100+ points season again.

Looking at points per game for sid in the injured 2010-2013 seasons compared to mcdavid this year, while accounting for league points per game, sid actually had higher scoring. As a lifelong Pens fan, I have so many great Sid memories- both from watching live at Mellon/Console/PPG, and from 8 inches in front of the TV at home- but I think if I had to pick one, it's probably when he hoisted the cup for the first time in 09. I was 13, the year I first started playing hockey, the first Stanley Cup I got to see our boys hoist in my lifetime, Sid being the youngest captain to ever do so. Since then, even after all the concussions and brutal injuries, he's been the most consistently reliable, competitive, and jaw-dropping player we've had in Pittsburgh. Every time he's on the ice, you just can't help but sit in awe of what he continues to do, regardless of the (many) accomplishments he's earned over his career. And it's more than just watching a gifted forward, it's all over the ice- the blocks, the diving plays to keep the puck in the zone, the unmatched puck protection, the faceoff wizardry, the unreal passing and play-making, and the insatiable hunger to win, regardless of who he shares the ice with. We truly are blessed to have had him as our captain all these years, and I know it will be a sobering day when he finally does retire. Until then, we just have to be attentive and grateful for the treasure that is Sidney Crosby.

I say the same thing about the Suter hit from behind on Gretzky in the 1991 Canada Cup (World Cup). Gretzky was NEVER the same again and we wouldn't even be talking about OV catching him. From 79-80 to 90-91 - Gretzky's lowest goal total was 40. & got 51 or more 9 times. His lowest assist total was 86 in his rookie season but then he got at least 102 in the rest. Never missed the playoffs in a single season. After the hit... From 91-92 to 98-99 - Most goals he got was 38 and 31 - 25 or under in the rest. He never cracked 100 assists again - topping 90 only twice. His teams were only in the playoffs 4 times after the hit. It's like looking at 2 different players. Yes, I get that he was getting older, but the drop off from 91 to 92 is very significant.

I have so many memories of Crosby. I took my deep dive into hockey at 18 or 19 (I was a fan but became obsessed when I moved away from home and stopped playing) right around the time when his injury trouble started. I watched the Golden Goal (thanks Iggy). My uncle was a Nova Scotian rink rat and I remember him coming to visit the Christmas the year before Crosby's first WJCs and him talking about how he'd never seen a player like him before. I also remember Cindy Crysby phase where it was cool to dislike him. Or thinking he would be out of the NHL before he hit 30 with the nature of his injuries. To see how he adjusted his game to maintain a certain level of dominance, how he improved everyone around him... his pure awareness and knowledge of all 20,000sq ft of the rink... and how it has led him to still be a force who can play at 35 is wild. It'll be sad when he retires but I can't wait to see him as a coach of some sort. He really defined how a lot of people around my age grew up with hockey.

Very good video, this gave me a new perspective on Crosby's career, especially given that I have left North America since 2011. As a Canadian, I therefore lived through Crosby-mania. But not as much of his career after that. Of course, negative things happening to people, especially with such skill and talent, is sad. But this video gives me yet another perspective, on life. In the West, we are so focused on wanting things, yet when these things are taken from us, we find them tragic. It's true. But I think we also just have to admire and accept what is sometimes. Crosby will always be etched up there in the pantheon of hockey gods/greats, because anyone who followed his career (especially the beginning, as highlighted in the video) will know just how talented and how much potential he had. That will never be taken away from him. He will always be remembered for his greatness - even if it was shorter-lived than we all hoped and expected. It reminds me of Forsberg. I'm not even quite sure what really took him away from the game (prematurely), but everyone who saw him play, again, will remember him for the same thing: his greatness. It's not so much the stats tallied over a career/lifetime - yes, those are important/significant. But how people are remembered - at least while those who remember are still alive - is much more about what sentiment and thoughts they evoke in people's mind. And Crosby, Forsberg and those types of guys, they will always primarily be remembered for their greatness.

You are so correct here. Crosby was set to be on one of those short lists of greats who won multiple Art Ross, Hart and Conn Smythe trophies, but concussions stripped him to being "merely" a great player, admittedly with a penchant for big goals. We, his fans, and of course, he himself were robbed of peak Crosby. And with peak Ovechkin occurring at the same time, it could have been as exciting as Gretzky and Lemieux (another superstar impacted by injuries) playing at the same time Not that this solves the problem, but that first hit on Crosby was a Matt Cooke type of hit. It should have earned around a 40 game suspension, but of course, in Bettman's world concussions are part of the fun. Bettman who likely couldn't skate from the center dot to the bench.

Yeah he lost the disregard he had for his body after those injuries. I wouldn’t say he has ever played scared but you can tell he started to factor in his personal health when making decisions on the ice. He used to go full speed at the net with complete abandon for what would happen to his body. It’s like he acknowledged his mortality after the injuries.

Just goes to show people how ‘ tough as nails ‘ Sidney Crosby really is after sustaining those injuries and yet bouncing back to help win 2 more consecutive Cups for the Pens. No matter what, he’ll easily go down as one of the best ever.

The silver lining is that he evolved into a more complete player post-concussions. His game would’ve evolved any way, but during the back-to-back cup runs he was just as dominant, though less flashy, more grindy

I actually made a video about this many years ago and had to delete it cuz YT copyright and other crap. If people do an indepth analysis, you'll find that what Crosby did in juniors and in his first 6 seasons in the NHL was greater than what McDavid is doing right now. Crosby is better and way better. In juniors, Crosby had a better ppg than McDavid. Crosby also won championships and McDavid didn't. By the age 24 Crosby had won everything you could win. I mean, he was already done what most hockey players in an entire career can't do. He did it all by age 24, also being the youngest captain. I did an analysis of NHL stars and found that on avg, NHL stars peak in season 6. Guess when Crosby's first concussion was? In season 6. He was having the most outstanding season of his career on pace for 64 goals and 135 points and in those days when scoring was down, that was remarkable. Today's NHL, it's loose and back open to the 1980s. No offense to McDavid but him putting up 150 points is not that impressive when you see someone like RNH put up 104 pts or Jason Robertson put up 109. Crosby up until his 6th season had at the time the 3rd highest ppg average in NHL history. He was peaking and hitting his prime where we were going to see him score 50-60 goals a year like Ovechkin. People forget one of Crosby's greatest assets was his physicality and tenacity. He was vicious. His physical strength, lower body strength, balance, edge work, and rough housing allowed him to bully and bulldoze his way through defenders, and defenses.......McDavid doesn't have physicality but he has better skating ability to do that, but Crosby was the complete package. Once his concussions became a serious issue that could have ended his career at age 24-25, he really had to adjust his game and you could see he was less tenacious, less aggressive, and a lot more laid back trying to focus on other parts of the game where he could excel. So I always say, since 25 years old, we only see a diminished Crosby play the rest of his career. But he was SO GOOD that even a diminished Crosby was still the best NHL player by far. Imagine that. In the end, he's done everything in the game, and that's why he's easily in the top 5-10 goats ever to play the game. Personally I have him in the top 5. People really forget how good he was.

I was never interested in the Penguins but knew at the time about his injuries and if he was going to stay in the league or if he had seen what happened to Lindros and was going to call it quits. I remember a game from the last season or two between Ovechkin and Crosby where there was a graphic about points per date from them entering the league together in '05-'06, but I never realized their was a dirty hit from an Ovechkin teammate that ultimate cost Crosby a lot of games in his prime. As it stands currently Crosby has 44 more points in 157 fewer games, or about 0.18 points per game better (over 200 points if you average their games played) Sure Ovechkin is close to breaking Gretzky's goal total, but Crosby knows how to pass too like Gretzky because both have many more assists than goals.

I missed Prime Lemieux(85-90), but fell in love with him as my favorite player ever and he always will be. I have been fortunate to see all of Sidney Crosby's career. He is truly spectacular. I cherish every shift he plays for us. My favorite thing about Sid is this; yes he's primarily a scorer and a point producer, but there are nights when the offensive production just isn't there. Happens to all players. But it's on those zero point nights he still impacts the game quite a bit. He will hit, back check, win battles for possession, win face offs and draw penalties and he does all that better than anyone on most nights. He helps his team win without the puck on his stick more than any other non-goaltender I've ever seen. His career accomplishments will be complete when he finally receives the long overdue Selke Trophy that he's deserved for more than a decade now.

The violence that is permitted by owners sacrifices skilled players. It models horrible behaviour for young children in the sport. Teams seem unable to play with skill as they break the rules constantly. It impacts class players.

Honestly…I get that people want to say “what a shame”…or “what if”… But I think that kind of wishing disregards how excellent he still is. Seeing his amazing career since…I think “holy shit what a player”. He changed his game to be defensive forward. He fights in corners and steals pucks. He wins a crazy amount of faceoffs. All while scoring 40 goals. I’m glad that Crosby didn’t end up like Lindros or Kariya. I’m glad he’s had 12 years of great hockey since. I’m glad he could change his game to stay elite as he aged. The pens nearly made the playoffs on his willpower alone. That’s more impressive to me than scoring titles. He may not be as flashy but I’m happy he’s still playing.

The fact that Crosby has all these awards and championships yet we're still sitting here wondering what else he could have accomplished had it not been for injury tells you everything you need to know about how insanely talented he is. Sorry to everyone who rides the 'McJesus' bandwagon, but until Crosby retires, I'm not willing to give him the title of best player in the world.

Crosby has the intangibles that McDavid doesn’t. Crosby is a superior leader and captain, and a superior two way player focusing more on defense. McDavid scored 150+ points yet got knocked out by Jack Eichel who had 66 in the regular season lol points aren’t everything

Sid will always have his myopic detractors, as does every superstar. But no doubt he is a top 5 all time forward. Putting up the totals he has, even with the huge chunk of his prime missed, in a relatively low scoring era, you can argue his adjusted for era value makes him better than everyone but Gretzky and Howe. He is still destroying at age 35. He's done it all and won it all and if it weren't for the salary cap PIT would be gobbling up HoF talent across the League to keep the Cups rolling in like Detroit did for Yzerman.

Malkin is criminally underrated. He honestly was a top center in the league for a long time and still is! His whole career he’s just been behind sid so he never got much of a spotlight. He’s 4th in active point leaders with 1229 points. He could also take the #3 spot in the coming years passing Kane as he is only 8 points behind him. Malkin also has 20 more goals than Kane and has played in 117 less games. Even though Malkin is well respected, he deserves more credit than people give him imo.

Why Connor is not human and Crosby is. Connor has had two career ending situations once with his clavicle bone and then with his knee and he recovered very quick 2015 he missed 4 months after going into the board awkwardly and then came back that same season and scored a crazy goal like nothing happened. When he rammed his knee into the goal post he recovered again in 4 months and came back and had an explosive season. The guy is not human. No disrespect to Crosby but Connor on another planet here.

My favorite Crosby moment was a Hurricanes vs Penguins game, a Pens fan sat next to me, a Canes fan. We chatted it up all game and eventually he goes and tries starting a "Let's go Penguins" chant, followed by a Canes fan running back to his seat yelling "Fuck the Penguins bitch" we both started dying laughing from it. It wasn't really a Syd memory, but Sydney Crosby was playing that night. Hurricanes won, the Pens fans were pleasant though
