So let me be clear on and address alot of the comments. Dont think that steve or anyone in the video is trying to come up with some wazzu shit. Dont get me wrong, what hes saying to ryan and i is news to us only because we dont know this stuff lol. Steve is a good buddy of mine who has a passion for these guns hes making and like i said, after i shot them i was impressed. Can you slap a gun together or buy one from a manufacture that shoots as well? Hell yes you can and thats awesome! Personally for me i love the passion he has for building these guns and i wanted to give him a platform to speak about his passion as i would for any one of my friends. ALSO! yes i understand the rail looks like other rails on the market. Lets be honest, that can be said about every rail, reciever group and accessories on the market. The guys and gals at ripcord added their own flare which to some may not be needed and again.. THATS OKAY

It literally doesn't matter, because they will be at vastly different temperatures anyway. Temperature of the bolt plateaus while the carrier and chamber side of the barrel will continue to climb in a DI gun, in a piston gun the bolt and carrier barely get any heat.

Quick Tip: A quick and easy way to check your gas rings is to remove your BCG from your upper, and with the bolt in the UNlocked position try standing the BCG up on end, with the bolt facing down. If it collapses under its own weight, you need new gas rings.

A few things to add. They needed to spec out a new gas block for these barrels. The core series barrels are known for being undersized on the gas block journal by the people who build guns and and spec them for a living. So good on them. I originally thought vltor built their rails but yeah must not be. Looks like a mix between a Geissele and vltor freedom rail. Both great rails so nice little mix up of them with their own touch. You can bash on any company you want but I enjoy more companies. Competition drives innovation, harder to do now in the AR world but nice to have options.

They are doing a great job of building their ARs . I have been building my own since the 1980s. I learned from a good friend that absolutely loved the M16/AR 15. I have since learned a mountain of info along the way. I love to tune them. My favorite one has , among other things, a David Tubbs flat wire recoil spring that eliminates bolt bounce. You need 7 1/2" of barrel past the gas block and you can change dwell time with buffer weight or / and bolt carrier weight. You can tighten up groups by better barrel extension to receiver fit. Even the amount of torque on the barrel nut can be used to tune one. Lots of other things too. Just wish I could shoot as fast as milspec mojo.

This video pretty much explains why I have considered making the last AR that I built be the last one that I ever do build. Even if you get the most Gucci parts out there, you’re still gonna have a Franken-gun that wasn’t built/designed from the ground up with all the matching tolerances and cohesion that you can get from a complete build made entirely by a quality company. I could spend $5000 on the best, most high quality parts to build a gun and it still probably won’t run as well as a $2500-$3000 gun that some other guy just bought straight from a quality manufacturer. Really enjoyed listening to this guy and sounds like he’s gonna be making some nice guns when he really gets everything up and running with his company. Thanks for the great vid.

Why won’t your gun run as well as the rifle he specs to a builder the same way every other manufacturer does? If you assemble a rifle correctly from reputable parts I don’t see how your rifle is any less quality or reliable than the rifle he specs out.
@thalesofmiletus6162

except, what does "run really well" mean. Don't get me wrong, I love well built AR's, but what benefits do you actually get outside of aesthetics. Accuracy? Reliability? I've run 3k factory guns as well as 1k hand built guns ragged past thousands of rounds. Nether have had any reliability or accuracy issues, and feel fantastic to shoot. The only difference is my hand built gun has some really stupid things on it from time to time as a swap stuff out for fun.

I think another thing that comes into play is that every manufacturer may have slightly different priorities/goals in mind with their builds. For example, this guy seemed more concerned about strength/stability/rigidity with his handguard and the interface between barrel and upper receiver being more beefed up, whereas a lot of other high quality manufacturers would cringe at that because they’re all about shedding weight. Either one could be making really good guns but they may have different opinions on what makes the ultimate, most desirable setup. I think you can get even more into this when you look at gas systems. Some manufacturers are gassing their guns as low as possible to make the system run smoother with minimum recoil while other manufacturers gas their guns really high to improve gun reliability and help prevent malfunctions. And you see people that swear by either of those opinions and say that they prefer one over the other. Now take that into factor when you’re building your own gun and mix/matching parts from all these different (but still high quality) manufacturers who all have slightly differing opinions on how a gun should run and you end up with different parts designed from differing views/opinions (but still high quality) that might not quite run as well as a from the ground up build. I’m sure it’ll still feel like butter compared to a $600 smith and Wesson M&P 15 but perhaps not quite up the same level as a gun that had all its parts designed/built from ground up

The amount of gas going to your gas block depends on the size of the gas port and length of the gas system on each barrel length you have and the barrel manufacturer you use . Having a particularly tuned gas block for barrel length probably isn't going to work out the way they're thinking.

They’re trying to match the ID of the gas block to the OD of the gas journal, not restrict the gas flow in any way. .750” might actually be .7495” or .7505, that’s what they’re talking about, other places do that too.

As far as gassing a rifle properly and tuning the buffer should a shooter be worried about one offs? For example, my 16" had never really liked steel cases. A couple weeks ago I was at the range running some Tula 75gr, Ammo Inc, 77gr, and Hornady Match 75gr to see which grouped best at 100. The first round from Tula left a stuck case I had to tap out with a cleaning rod- after that it ran fine. The Hornady stovepiped on a round; other than that it ran fine. Ammo Inc ran perfectly. Should I be concerned about the one offs?

Looks like a Geissele rail but with simple screw clamp design that most cheap barrels use but have made the barrel nut longer… kinda like Geissele but Geisssle actually invented a new lock up system.
@E.Chang.
@E.Chang. 2 жыл бұрын
Bendy Bill didn't actually invent a new lock up system. He took heavy inspiration from the HK416. They were making the HK SMR's before the Mk1 and Mk2 came out. But I also agree, that on the surface the ripcord handguard looks like a Mk16 sans M-lok in the middle.
@relentlessamerican9373
@relentlessamerican9373 2 жыл бұрын
@@E.Chang. I own a 416, I’m not seeing the similarities between my geissele URGI and my 416. My 416 has a single flat head screw going through a vice clamp at the bottom of my rail. A lot like how most mounts mount to pic rails. It’s actually incredibly similar to my surefire x300 lock up system but the 416 is beefier. Where my Geissele rail has two screw feeding through the rail that go through grooves in the barrel nut and have 2 shoulders on either side of the rail, one set of shoulders just snuggly fit against the receiver and the second set of shoulders have set screws and tighten down to the receiver. Barrel nut seems to be considerably longer in the geissele but I can’t see that well down the 416 and haven’t ever taken the rail off. I have two other giessele rails and they are basically the same. Accept one of the indents into a notch into the upper revivers pic rail but has no shoulders which I’m guessing the notched upper and rail replaces the need for the shoulders. But all 3 of them have the same barrel nut and two bolt lock systems that actually “pins” into the barrel nut. Pin isn’t the right term, the damn screws have a specific spot where they fed though the barrel nut. Which is the only system I’ve seen actually locking a rail to a barrel nut. Most system just use tension. Daniel Defense lock up system in my opinion is the very best as far as structural strength and having piece of the mounting system actually screwed onto the barrel nut the torqued down to the receiver with a series of beefy screws.

There's a fair number of handguards that have lengthened and grooved/indexed barrel nuts, to enable tighter, twist-resistant handguard-to-upper attachment. BCM handguards have this; Aero Precision "Enhanced" receiver/handguard combos have it; and I'm sure several others do as well.

@@relentlessamerican9373 Sure, something to describe a close tolerance fit that also mechanically (thru means other than rotational friction like std 2 bolt clamp) prevents twisting. Keyed, indexed, or even a barrel nut that has threaded holes, and screws that fasten thru handguard into barrel nut. I've seen the latter on tubular handguards.

A smooth gun isn't just pleasant, its frankly a more reliable gun. The more i study gunsmithing regarding the AR15 platform, the more I'm beginning to formulate the opinion that the a huge part of why high end guns feel the way they do, is from efficient gas systems. From gas block to bolt tail, guns need to keep as much gas sealed in as possible until the system is fully unlocked and gas begins leaving the vents in the BCG and the chamber of the barrel. Leaky systems are inconsistent, but also, the fears of unreliable function stem from years of leaky systems caused by subpar tolerances; ham-fistedly mitigated by overgassing. The gas block must be well sealed to the journal, the gas tube must fit snug in the gas block and/or be sealed (KAC does this as do some others I believe), the other end of the gas tube must seal inside the carrier key, the carrier key must seal against the carrier, the bolt tail must fit snugly inside the bolt tail seal inside the carrier and of course the gas rings have to be well supported and not worn out in order to seal. Loose tolerances inside a BCG and leaky gas tube interfaces create lower gas pressure at the bolt. Lower gas impulse at the bolt means that it will take less adverse input for the gun to stop working. The more efficient the gas system is, the more adverse state the gun will need to be in to create a malfunction. Tolerance Example - Carriers that are intended to be chrome lined, have to have their internal bores milled slightly larger to accommodate the thickness of chrome lining. If these carriers are mixed up at a factory and sent to nitride instead; you've got a whole batch of carriers that are extremely gas inefficient and may not run in a gun with a proper gas port size. Or maybe more commonly, the gun DOES run for a while, until it gets dirty, dry, steel case, its cold or a combination. Or how about the same situation with an overgassed barrel? It will run longer than the correctly gassed barrel with all those leaks, but will still beat the gun and user to death unnecessarily and cause its own malfunctions i.e. premature gas ring/extractor/ejector failure. With this, I would pose that Steve's demo gun ran consistently through an entire magazine due to the efficient gas system, only failing to lock back on empty. The only failure point was likely the gas rings and maybe gas tube due to the round count (gas tube diameter can be checked with a gauge too). If the system were leaky at any additional locations, it would have stopped running long ago.
