i really feel like the deaths in this movie could have been crazier and more focused on artwork. To continue the trend of death ideas; A mural of a tiger (maybe graffiti to be ironic for that one lady) comes to life and stalks the victim along the walls of a dark street, the painting itself never leaving the second dimension. In the morning no body is found, but the tiger mural has completely changed from how it was originally, instead if maybe standing in a walking pose, the tiger is now hunched over, eating.

I liked when I watched the movie, and a few of the scenes were quite creative, but the theme of valuing art as something that matters because humans like it is what mainly made me enjoy it so much. I never even thought about how much more interesting the deaths could be lol. I even skipped over some of them cause I’m squeamish. I love your idea and I bet they could have come up with lots of stuff like that

To add to the chain, it made me imagine if an artist was splattered across a canvas but their own silhouette was left perfectly clean and untouched (white silhouette, red background). This could've been a death for the potential character Ponder mentioned, about the artist having put all of themselves into their art while they were making their way in the industry, but now they have nothing left to say and are now producing hollow, meaningless art for the masses. There's nothing left in them, it all went on canvases before. Shown by the negative silhouette and blood-covered positive space of the canvas. Not as crazy and surreal as some of the other cool death scene suggestions, but it feels like a potentially significant way of making that point.

I kind of remember seeing a painting with that imagery, a lion sniffing a sleeping woman. Even though it can be read as an innocent gesture, it can also be ominous-is the lion planning on eating the woman, or is he just nuzzling her? Since graffiti art is often considered low-brow, the tiger “eating” the woman could be an allusion to this other art piece-to emphasize the irony, we would have that character say she liked the original painting and it’s ambiguity (or what have you), but would view graffiti recreating that image as “poor taste.” Then we never see if she’s being eaten or not, we could interpret her in the picture as sleeping or dead

Personally I kinda liked how Damrish's art wasn't shown and how little focus there was on any artists or pieces besides the death scenes. The characters were dismissing the art or only engaging with it on a surface level and so was the movie, so in the hallucination and death scenes it felt like the art was forcing itself into the movie as well as into the characters lives. None of the art critics or owners wanted us to engage with Damrish's works, they only cared how the art is talked about and so we as the audience only heard their opinions and didn't see it, that is until the art itself became an active force overpowering them

I once saw a painting in someone's house that was made with the ashes of a dearly departed friend. Artists will see something and be like, "do it art?" and try to make art with it. Also, a gruesome artistic death could be at an exhibition. People start with taking pictures of the art shown, but then they start taking pieces of it. You try to stop them, but then they start to tear pieces off of you. First clothes, then hair, then limbs, organs, bones, and even the skin of your hollowed husk. It's a horrible way to go, but it also demonstrates how an audience can with an artist, to wanting to own some part of you(r work) or they tear you to pieces (critically).

I had assumed the reason why the little art thief went first because he was planning to steal the art on a metaphorical level and claim it as his own. I don't even think this was said, I just assumed it was his intent, that he was going to sign them with his own name and pass them as his, and that this was the cardinal sin that sentenced h to immediate death. But now I'm not actually sure where I got that from.
@pondersprocket2274

That actually would have been a *great* motive for him to go first. Had Bryson been fleshed out a little more then that could have been a well defined aspect of the narrative. Presently, it does feel more like speculation simply because while he *did* take credit for someone else's work as a means of classifying himself as an artist, he *was* still specifying that he was a part of the installation process and not taking credit for the creation of the pieces as a whole.
@ArchieRatsworth
@ArchieRatsworth 3 ай бұрын
@@pondersprocket2274 Isn't credit theft seriously frowned on in the art community? I can't imagine how frustrating it would be to have a total stranger claim partial credit for your work just because they work at a gallery that happened to display it. He had no work of his own, does he? Yet he wants to attach himself to the people actually creating and producing the works without their knowledge or consent. That would easily be seen as a form of exploitation by the frustrated ghost of a dead artist who already blames him for exposing his work to other exploiters. The ghost judged him quickly as a minor parasite who had no creative work of his own, no eye for art and no hope of appreciating it while trying to benefit from a totally utilitarian role. That is why Bryson was killed off so quickly. Deets had no interest in observing him any further, unlike the others who could have more elements worth consideration. ETA: Deets isn't a objective judge of character, he is a vindictive spirit who weights the merits of the critics and exploiters through a personal bias as brutal as the one displayed by the critics. The fact that his judgment costs the lives of those he judges unworthy is a dark mirror of the influence of the art critics. A story of twisted vengence.

a digital artist who "curses" their art in a similar manner to the program Nightshade, but with a twist. any time their art is used in an image made by ai, a physical version of whatever was depicted in the original image comes to life and drags the "artist" into the very computer they used to mangle their work. on another account, each of these victims shows up as another piece in the same style, corpses on display, cursed in the very same way and thus repeating the cycle. yeah if you cant tell im a digital artist who has been poisoning the FUCK out of my art.

Art death idea: Art dealer after hours at their gallery is moving out the previous night's paintings and exhibits for the next days', during which they begin to feel an eerie feeling from the art pieces, like they're all watching the dealer. As the feeling grows, they begin to back away from the paintings, feeling the eyes boring into them. They end up going over the railing of the second floor, falling and bleeding out, while still feeling the eyes of the paintings and other art pieces. The next day, everyone treats them as the newest installment of the exhibition. I'd say this death would most likely be befitting of someone that disregards the tragedy and feelings of the artists and their pieces, and instead only values the art on their ability to draw a crowd, including shock value.

Idea: The curse could also have a sort of flipside to try and help other tormented artists so they are not trapped tha same way he is. For example, a young adult artist troubled by past abuse is pulled into a painting depicting the abuse they went through, only here, they're strong enough to fight back and protect the younger children. When they are released from the painting, it now shows an angel protecting said children from whoever was going to harm them.

1) I really liked this review. It felt very thorough from a perspective of being genuinely interested in symbolism, breaking down film and art alike. Its really clear that you engage with the movie in a thoughtful and cool way where there's both room for enjoyment, but also criticism. It's really nice and made the review very enjoyable, despite the fact that I else would not care particularly for that kind of movie. Despite loving both horror and art as well, I think your sum-up and break-down gave me the most enjoyment that I would have gotten out of Velvet Buzzsaw. I do really hope you'd consider doing this again about movies that interests you - It's very lovely. 2) When the scene finally came around in which I understood the thumbnail, I was greatly humored. Great choice. 3) I love the segway animation you used - it's very artsy and fun. Super enjoyable. Generally your assets for video making (while not at their final stages) is very nice and adds a lot of personal touch. 4) Honestly I really love listening to you talk about films. It feels to me, like a viewer, that this type of lighter content that you're passionte about, is much more cheerful compared to some of your drama/heavy content. That's not to say I don't *love* that stuff (because I do frequently rewatch it haha), but this feels like it's less... for a lack of better words, less draining and grating of your lifespan. I remember whenever I watched your video "Ponder Sprocket: The Movie", were in you also talked about two movies (I dont recall the names off of the top of my head). Listening to you talk about film theory, composition, etc. was just charming. It's really cool getting to see that again between this video and the one on Dirk Gently. (by the way, thanks for talking about it, as a fan i cry over the cancellation and lack of content AUGH). This was a lovely watch that clearly left me with much to enjoy. Not simply the points above, but I really enjoyed just listening to your review of it. Also for art ways to die: I feel there's a lot of appeal and joy in the way that art ony has meaning in the eyes of the beholder. How a lot of it is *dead*, but comes to life, because we breathe life and purpose individually into it. You don't have to like a pece, it doesn't have to resonate with you, but I feel like artists often are able to see that it probably has meaning to someone. To recognize a subjective worth, even if its not your own taste. For those who do not see it, *do not see a purpose to it*, and even see other's art as mere trash, I think there's a lot to play with. Skin peeling like old, cracked paint, becoming what you percieve as old and obsolete. Ones joints getting rusty, creaking as you move about. A body failing you, slowly becoming "trash" in the harsh and unforgiving eyes that only sees the living and beautiful as a tool for profit and cogs in a machine. I have no coherent ideas, but the visuals and sensation sticks with me, as I more and more fear that my body will never be able to keep up and create the art i need to make to survive. because as an artist, I only remain valuable if I continue making. Or if I'm dead. And I think that's very cool and thoughtful! Art consumer and artist alike. Also it makes me really appreciate the art I have already have made. Maybe I shouldn't fear the inevitable end, but enjoy that I got to journey.

Art death: At first you’re under the impression there is an earthquake. The room shakes but you’re the only thing that falls over and your arm falls off. When placed back together at the socket, a thin line of gold welds it back on just for the action to repeat. It keeps going until the person is shattered into pieces with each fall, only for each tiny piece to patch itself back on. You feel the pain of your skin, bone, and muscle splitting but you’re destined to be recreated and broken until the room is done with you and you can no longer be brought back as a beautiful piece😋

1:15:51 My first idea was in regards to Morph’s attitude towards art, only finding it worthy if it becomes about him. He makes fun of one instillation, mocks the artist, but later is happy to know it ranked in the most profit. As he walks through the museum, now closed. he makes a step, seeing the piece once more, the eyes of the figure captivating as they are semi reflective. The ground beneath him raises to become a podium, glass surrounding him. He attempts to bang on the glass, but his body begins to lock and movement isn’t at all possible anymore. He is completely frozen in place but still fully aware and conscious. The crowd comes in studying the statue that had just arrived. “An installation dedicated to the world renowned art critic.” Is what his coworkers market it as, seeing a statue so closely resembling that of their former colleague. My writing isn’t the best but I find the idea horrifying. To become the thing everyone picks apart and looks at, disregarding the reason the art was made in the first place.

I think there’s something interesting and somewhat of a missed opportunity that the rich clients themselves didn’t feature as characters, because in the system the narrative presents, the clients can either be as exploitative as the critics, or _exploited_ as the artists. These high art scenes are kind of not so secretly a front for money laundering so Gretchen’s client for example could be nothing more than a money laundering scumbag who only cares about the art so long as it can benefit them, only to lock them away once their usefulness is dried up. Or they could have a completely genuine interest and love for the arts and more money than they know what to do with, so they’re effectively just throwing their money at whatever artist Gretchen tells them needs/deserves the support because they want to support artists, even ones who don’t necessarily make art to their personal taste. That might’ve made the rules even more clear of someone who had bought the painting out of genuine appreciation was left completely unscathed vs one who bought it for personal gain whether to put on airs of pseudo intellectualism or money laundering being punished.

I wish there was a focus on performance art. A lot of performance art is about becoming art yourself. Imagine a pretentious performance artist, they don’t do much, just set up creepy music and pose weirdly. As the movie goes on though their performance gets more and more bizarre, the music gets distorted as the performances go on and the artist gets themselves into weirder and weirder positions until eventually…they don’t even look human anymore. In fact, they’ve contorted their body in such a way that It’d be impossible to get them out of it. This could represent how artists could go from ambitious wide eyed people to objects, used only to make their art. I dunno that’s just my pitch

For a death via art, if we want to take the movie's themes into account, we could really go with. The most on the nose thing ever but that would be fun. Have an art piece that's about food, maybe a sculpture or something. Have a character get pulled to it for reasons they can't explain, or maybe they run into it by chance or are interested in it's artist as a whole, something to tie them to the piece. Maybe they accidentally break it, only to find the insides are almost identical to what the statue's replicating. It's... real, isn't it? But pristine, divine, and surely must taste as such. Or maybe a little gets on their hands and they lick it off to find it really does taste that good. They start to indulge themselves in this piece, nothing else like it, nothing so tailored to perfection, the hands that crafted it long since handed over the piece to the art market, it's not really theirs anymore, is it? The victim starts to greedily stuff the pieces of the art into their mouth, eagerly devouring this masterpiece. But you are what you eat, right? They start to change, their skin, muscle, bones start to morph into the statue's original material, it gets harder to move, to breathe, but they just can't stop. It's too good. Its too much. They end up becoming a statue, the very thing they tried to mindlessly consume.

Banger video as usual ponder! Here's my artistic death idea, inspired by what you mentioned about the thieving body pillow company; Someone who steals art to print out and sell on body pillows starts having nightmares every night of being grabbed at by invisible hands. They haunt them more and more frequently with each night, something that impacts their ability to produce their stolen merchandise. They spend more and more time in bed every day, trying to catch up on sleep that does not come, jolted awake every minute their eyelids drift shut. One night, the hands start haunting them before their eyes even close pushing out from within sheets and pillows, staining the fabric with dyes from where they push out. The victim is too exhausted and sleep-deprived to struggle meaningfully, but they thrash, fighting back with the last bits of strength left in their body as the hands drag them into the bed, smothering them in what should've been the safest place for them. all what is discovered in the morning is a silhouette of their body, a snapshot of their dying struggle, imprinted onto the mattress by something that appears to be rotting bodily fluids, but is actually fabric dye.

I remember watching this movie just because of the connection to Darger after learning about him in an art history course-so I was happy to see that you brought up that connection. As for the "an artistic death" - or I guess elimination in this case (coming from somebody who works in an art gallery)-i would go the artistic film route. Lights go out, and the film begins playing. It's hypnotic and the victim cannot look away. The grainy footage getting more and more clear as it plays one, only to realize they are no longer watching but now in the film. They try to escape but each loop, they find themselves in a role to play-and soon they forget they were ever a real person.

Its one of those slow burns, as they walk through the gallery things seem to move, until theres realization that their clothes are starting to melt much like the pieces display, and turn it to a panicked, visceral scene of someone watching themselves literally melt away until at the end theyre a vaguely human shape, a puddle on the ground and apart of the exhibit.

A death with artistic medium i can think of is a wasteful painter being drowned in the paints they wasted carelessly as it floods their home, or specifically their room until nothing is left. Another one is someone who wasted clay when sculpting is buried alive in the tons of tons of clay, maybe of various bases, they carelessly threw away for years, becoming a statue themselves the next day.

34:33 - 34:54: So glad that you’ve brought this up as it now triggers a past memory of mine to bring up another example. Although it’s more used as an educational setting rather than being used as an art piece (although one may argue that some of them are posing as if it’s in an artistic way, and also the art is beholden by the viewer, and that kind of thing of someone’s subjectivity of what an art piece is), I did remember the Denver Museum of Nature and Science advertised back in the day an exhibition known as Body Worlds where, through generous donations before someone’s passing, the deceased body would have their muscular system be exposed to the public for educational manner while doing various poses such as running or lifting. Which will bring up another kill that I thought up in my head. Do the whole thing with the statues and the victims, but instead of con-jointing the body, the animated corpses instead hold down the victim and cut off the skin of the victim alive. It would probably be too gruesome for the film to be shown the full process, so I would imagine that someone would walk into the exhibit, noticing all of the blood, and then a new piece will be shown standing up right while holding their own cut up skin, displaying it to everyone.

Hey Brooke! The entire time I was hearing your analysis of this film, I kept thinking the same thing: this sounds a lot like The Menu. If you haven't seen The Menu, that movie touches on a lot of the same themes that this one does, granted through the lens of food critics instead of art critics. As that was one of my favorite horror films to come out in the past couple years, I highly recommend you check it out! The big difference between The Menu and this movie is that it seems The Menu is less focused on it strictly going after critics, and more focused on going after anyone who doesn't respect the art form. If you do go and watch it, please go in with as little prior knowledge as you can. You'll get way more out of it that way. In the meantime, I'll go watch Velvet Buzzsaw! This video sold me on checking the movie out. P.S. As someone who really likes movies, this was an absolute treat to watch! Please, make more of these! (Assuming that it's something you're interested in doing; up to you, obviously.)

35:55 while you're right about blood in art, I beg to differ. I think a movie whose intended audience was _only_ people who have knowledge of the greater art scene, it would exclusively play at sundance festival and nowhere else. For it to play to the general public at _all,_ the assumption should be that people would see blood being used in art as taboo or upsetting. Source: my middle school boyfriend, who was less than enthusiastic about the piece I made for him using my blood 😂

Funnily enough while I can't think of many art themed horror movies, I can think of a lot of art themed horror video games, Ib, Layers of fear etc. Edit: This is a bit boring but my art death is a figuratively toxic artist choking to death as the literal toxins from their supplies flood the room and overwhelm them.

So I just watched the movie before watching your video. The moments that disturbed me the most was whenever Dease was looking out of the paintings-I didn’t even catch that it was Dease until you said it. I assumed what was creepy was the art altering itself. I’m so used to thinking of art installations as “done,” That it genuinely creeped me out to see eyes move like that. Which in retrospect, that might reflect the unease I feel when making art-my own works are unpredictable as I make them and try new techniques, and seeing somebody else’s art changing so suddenly (without any artist’s help) freaked me out. This became twice or thrice as creepy when you said the artist was looking back -I’m the type of person that gets nervous when the shoplifting alarm goes off and I try to figure out if I accidentally “stole” something. The idea that art I’m trying to observe, understand, and develop an opinion on is watching me and trying to figure out if I’m a benevolent viewer or not …oh cripes that’s a new fear unlocked. Also, if I could suggest a creative death: I’ve heard sculptors say they aren’t carving stone but “releasing” the art piece, with some unfinished art pieces looking like somebody or something escaping a rock. So we see a sculptor chipping away, only for their material to crack in a way they didn’t expect it to. They get up to go get some plaster, but when they return and clean up the crack, a new crack appears elsewhere, and they close it up. This goes on for a while, cracking, patching, cracking, patching. Then there’s a new crack-it’s bigger than the others, and the artist feels something strange about it -maybe they hear voices whispering their name, see familiar faces peering from the darkness, maybe even smell mother’s cooking. The artist leans in to the crack. They’re suddenly pulled in, the crack sealing up behind them. The stone the sculptor carved is found as it was before, but now there’s a hand reaching and clawing its way out where the large crack was.

An art installation of empty hooks that hang from the ceiling, left to drag on the floor the night before a showing. The victim tries to walk (or run away) through it, only for the hooks to catch on their clothes and skin. The victim gets stuck in the installion -- and the hooks are pulled back up into the rafters, pulling the victim apart into a meat chandelier.

Picture this. An art critic who specialises in classical sculptures chiselled from marble has been travelling across the United Kingdom attending showcases with amateur, intermediate and expert levels of quality but no matter for whom they judge - it is always a negative review. They particularly enjoy mocking the sculptor for their lack of hands or how they didn't meet the criteria to be human enough. Perhaps the surface was too coarse or the details not portrayed well enough but there would always be something. However, after gaining access to a twilight tour of the showcase where critics could view the pieces in a quiet environment, our critic parts from the group to go ahead since the current grouping of only busts provided no intrigue compared to the later segment as mentioned on the pamphlet. Soon enough their impatience proved fortunate as they were granted a range of marble statues depicting anything from men to women and angels to demons. The quality and detail of each figure proved to be everything they could have asked for as every aspect of the body proved to mirror that of a human such as themselves. At this point it seemed as if everything was created just for him to marvel at and indulge in. Everything but the hands. When the critic leaned close to try and inspect the hands, it was like a shadow was constantly in the way and hiding that which they yearned to perceive no matter which statue they shifted around to inspect. No matter they could simply use the flashlight of their phone to do so as they had done plenty of times before now. Except...it was no where to be found no matter how deep they dug into their pockets with only dust and crumbs of marble being pulled out instead. Strange but no unsurprising, perhaps they should have washed through their pants more thoroughly. Regardless, being without a way of better examining the grand creations, they turned ready to join the group again so they could pester another for their phone. How odd. The door didn't budge and it seemed as though the handle had been almost twisted 180 degrees so it hung upside down. Completely useless. Being trapped, without a way of calling for anyone to assist and assuming the group would catch up to them, the critic would be made to wait in this wonderland of creation they had the misfortune of not being able to enjoy. They turned back around only to notice that they were now surrounded by the collection of marble statues that had once been fairly laid out in equally spaced segments which only housed empty podiums instead. No words found them. Nothing of terror, anger or confusion - just pure silence. Thinking the meagre light above was messing with their eyes they opted to close them shut and hoped nothing had actually changed as shaky breathes fell from their mouth until a sudden force threw them to the ground in an instant. Blood started to pool in their maw as they had both bitten their tongue harshly but also cracked a couple of their front teeth from such a forceful impact. Being almost too stunned to make a move, the critic opened their eyes again only to notice statues took up the space between themselves and the door now leaving nothing in the ways of a potential exit if throwing their body against the doors could do anything of worth. In a frantic effort to keep eyes on all the sculptures at once, they whipped their head all over the place sending crimson spit all across the wooden floors with an occasional splatter upon the statue's themselves. It proved to do little in the ways of saving them though as this pitiful display was stopped when the critic was held in what they would describe as a vice considering the strength in which was forced upon them. However it would prove to be the least of their worries as everything went dark in an instant before a searing pain spread from the ocular region of their skull with a wriggling feeling only prolonging the torture until a sudden snap confirmed their fears outright followed with the release of their head following soon after. Such suffering did not end there though as the touch of another graced their hands only to slowly tighten and squeeze with it growing in intensity as the seconds ticked by like days dragging along. A fiery pain juxtaposed the cold sensation of the aggressor's hands as they didn't stop for anything with flesh starting to tear, bones beginning to break and their blood began to flood the space between them. Any scream of agony fell on deaf ears and it failed to sway the other who found themselves going completely through the critic's hands only to meet themselves in the middle. Then it was over. As pain continued to build they were left alone only for the sudden rush of air to hit their back and the tour guide tried asking any which manner of questions, but it was futile. The trauma of losing both eyes and hands in such a sudden manner had knocked them right out with no obvious attacker left in sight but it wasn't of their concern and soon the showcase hall was closed up sharpish. A smile was shared between the marble statues as a soft dripping echoed throughout the space as blood fell onto the podium below.

oh oh oh for the death ideas-an artist who traces/steals, overnight develops amazing skill and doesn't even need to steal anymore, and throughout the background of the movie, they get more and more attention, before admitting they think someone is stealing their work, then the accusations are on three people, then ten, then, they walk into a showcase and everything is in the style they personally developed in gaining their skill, leading to a breakdown, insulting and tearing everything down until we switch perspectives and it was allll in their head. but when they go home and try to blow off steam-the talent is gone, the final nail in the coffin, the next day they've already taken their life

Art critic death: They return from an art exhibition and sit down at their computer to write their review. As they type, they start to type, they notice an itchiness spreading across their body. They ignore it and keep typing. Then, the itchiness turns to burning, and the critic pulls away their clothes to find scars and burns in the shape of the letters and words they've typed into their keyboard. Horrified, they stop, but the burns and scars keep appearing. They draw their last breath as the last word they typed appears on their skin, their criticism killing them akin to how it killed the careers of the artists they critiqued. The last word(s) burnt into their skin should be poetic, but I've lost my inspiration to write more, so have fun imagining what it/they could be!
