This. One thing I learned from tracing (photos with permission from photographer) is that you REALLY have to actually think about the piece just as much as if you didn't trace for it to look decent. The only traced piece of mine I liked was one of my own daughter. But I contemplated it for weeks, and worked on it over the course of a week, then made minut changes to clarify areas and details for another week. It was my best one out of the lot BECAUSE I put so much time into making it look ok! That's something you simply can't achieve with one day and a quick trace with basically base colors. Plus the lines I traced *weren't even visible in the finished piece* I was really challenging myself. Now I'm working on learning how to do all this quicker and without tracing. And I did the majority (besides the sketch) all on one layer. I've found my favorite part is actually sketching. It's the most time consuming part, but I love finally seeing the lines form something somewhat recognizable. But colorization seems to be what I'm most skilled at. And all of it is better off without tracing. I'd even argue that making a decent traced piece is WAY harder than just... Doing it all with a reference.

Like how James didn’t get better at knowing anything about any of the actual queer history he bastardized and stole; actively refusing to learn anything. Baffling. @Lucifersfursona
@Lucifersfursona Жыл бұрын
@@arose92795I used to trace from those base pose/draw the squad sheets going around tumblr when I was first trying to do more dynamic and full body poses. *_it is so much easier as an artist to just use references than to trace._* Tracing makes you doubt your own abilities AND feel like a fraud so you never move out of your comfort zone; I was stuck with the body types and shapes of whatever I’d traced as the base pose and had a horrible time trying to add specific features not on the bases bc I didn’t have faith in my own abilities to create things quickly and accurately. I’m literally only competitive with art skill (which is like, frustrating lol bc it makes me mean, I’ve worked on it a lot. Art isn’t a competition and I redirect my jealousy from “why isn’t this my art damn it” to “I’m so happy this vision I thought was stuck in my brain is out there in some form being seen.”) Tracing makes you feel powerful to a point but it’s a very stubborn, amateur thing to do. You are good enough to use references, you are good enough to learn from references and get better. Also, just like for other artists; if ur looking back at the old work and noticing flaws, like “how could I fck it up this bad” flaws, it _probably_ means art brain clicked together some new details about how to do the thing better. My anatomy starts looking wonky to me when my brain goes “oh, arm actually bends like this and can’t bend like that, oh leg goes over here, oh background goes like this” Art is a form of talking. Don’t steal other people’s words keep saying things even if you don’t say them right at first. Do the learn it’s fun

Third, even if she says her art is influenced by her real life, she also contradicts that statement many times, so there is no reason to believe her art is reflected in her daily life with her child. Fourth, there are way more important reasons to be considered about her child's wellbeing than "the pot," like the whole wanting to start a cult thing. you know how sometimes in cartoons/comics theres a gag were they suddenly draw them realistic? and it looks super awkward to have a cartoony design be realistic? her art reminds me of that, except its most of her art. the design of the pink cat just being a flat pink blob with triangle ears works way better in her very cartoony and simple untraced style. the pink cat having a realistic face and anatomy is uncanny looking, and i dont think thats what shes going for

I absolutely have to talk about Pink Cat's perfect utopia city BS. I'm currently in school for architecture, going into my fifth and final year (I'm also obsessed with self-sufficiency and gardening/farming), and I can guarantee you that nothing that she wants is possible. You can't have a high density city where every surface is covered in flowers or any type of plant. You can't grow the amount of food necessary to feed an entire city's worth of people within the given space, either. The public food gardens are a bad idea too- I'll explain why. I imagine that Pink Cat knows nothing about the seasonality of crops, the best planting and crop companion practices, or how to deal with pests, so I'll start with those. She'd have to choose crops that provide food throughout the year because, if you don't, then your city won't be able to eat it all when it's ripe and will starve when the crops are out of season. Even if you ate as much as possible fresh and preserved as much as you could of the rest, there would still be an immense amount of waste and there would still be starvation later in the year. I doubt that there would be that amount of foresight from someone like Pink Cat. But let's pretend that crops were chosen so that smaller amounts of food were available throughout the year. The next problem she'd encounter would come in the form of companion planting. You'd be surprised how bad monocultures are, and by how plants can thrive when grouped up together. Beans, corn, and pumpkins are a classic trio- the beans fix nitrogen into the soil, which the other two need to grow, while the corn provides a sort of trellis for the beans to grow on, and the pumpkins' wide, low leaves hold moisture in the ground. There are plenty of plant combinations that this works for, you just have to keep the general dynamic in mind to make it work. But it's unlikely that Pink Cat would understand or even care about the importance of any of this, or how crop rotation is necessary if you're doing monocultures (crop one year, nothing, then beans/peas- order doesn't particularly matter, but the land needs time to rest and recuperate and get that sweet, sweet nitrogen from the beans/peas). A third problem that she'd have to deal with is pests. Where there is food, there will undoubtedly be pests of many varieties. You could have anything from beetles to flies to rats to birds. There is absolutely no way to prevent these pests from swarming the city. They will ravage the crops and will make the entire place incredibly unsanitary. Some, like the birds and rats, can and will bring diseases that will hurt residents. It won't help that they'll likely be incredibly malnourished due to starvation. I wonder how she'd react to seeing the gardens being swarmed by filthy rats while covered in pigeon shit. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. There are plenty of other problems with her plan for a city, I just wanted to go into three that I know a bit about. Growing enough food to take care of yourself is hard enough, and you just don't have the space for it in a city. Even if the public gardens were scrapped and everyone subsisted off of hydroponic-grown lettuce or whatever from high density grow labs, there would still be immense amounts of malnourishment. Not all vegetables grow well in hydroponic gardens, and you'd be missing out on important nutrients regardless of whether or not you were limited by the hydroponic setup because of the vegan diet.

This comment is beautiful and I wish there were many young eyes on this to learn from it. No, you can't just swamp a city in greenery. As in no city beyond those designed with that in mind or has had it happen that way over time has the capacity to support such, or the capability to act on it past bringing it up at a meeting and it being bogged down by partisan grumblings. Recognized the drawing at 31:18 being traced from one of my all time favorite artists J.C Leyendecker lol. He was a magazine artist/oil painter who was active during the 1890s to 1950s and was highly influential in creating the 1920s Art Deco aesthetic most people are familiar with. (Another fun fact, he was also likely gay and his partner was one of his models which is ironic because of some of pink cat’s anti lgbt sentiments 💀) The original piece is called “Couple Descending a Staircase” if you’re interested in seeing some beautiful painting strokes 🤌

Thank you for calling her out! The way that non-Black people of color and some White people boil Black culture down to “internet/American culture” pisses me off in a way that’s hard to express. For all her talk about the trauma of her people and insinuating that her theft of shit that doesn’t belong to her is her “assimilating” to White Supremacy and “American culture” is fucking insane because MY people were forcibly brought here. We have no ties to the culture we were stolen from. We can’t speak the language, we don’t know the traditions, how to make the food, what celebration looks like. Hell, most of us don’t know which country we’re from in the first place! Black American culture is what we created for ourselves out of the scraps of our past. It’s the language we made, our traditions, our food, our look, our art. Sure, I bet we look cool and confident, because we are. We have to be to keep from crying. But don’t ever get it twisted, it’s OUR CULTURE, not “American” culture, not “internet” culture, BLACK AMERICAN CULTURE. So the flippant way that people treat profiting off of us, especially coming from other people of color, disgusts me. It’s a modern day minstrel show and it’s not okay at all

You know Glass Onion? Like the knives out movie? You know the part (SPOILERS obviously) where Blanc talks about how Miles uses big words to sound smart when they either aren't correctly used or arent even words at all, and how everybody sees it as innovative when it's just kind of...stupid? Hearing her words be read aloud instead of just text on the screen feels like that. Like it's so insane I have no actual fucking idea of what she's talking about when you break each point down, but if you showed me the text parts without a voiceover I think i'd fully be like "Oh yeah, I get what she means." Thats scary. That's so fucking scary, that people can just say shit and unless you really listen, you're deemed credible or at least more knowledgeable than you really are.

I recognized the image she traced for the art she used to advertise her book sale (54:28) . I only recognized it due to the fact that I used it as a reference when I was practicing posing. It is Gil Elvgren’s "Thinking of You" portrait. There were a couple others I recognized but couldn't find the images for. I can't judge Pink Cat for tracing, that would make me a hypocrite. But I will judge her for her many other choices, one of those being posting the traced images, and even more for denying that they are traced or claiming it to be "sampling". I understand that tracing can be a good way to practice, but I don't think posting it is a good idea. (That opinion is up to change, but that is what I believe as of now) Either way, love your videos Ponder, have a nice day, kiss kiss, and keep doing what you're doin'.

Tracing artwork is okay to post/share *only* if you are up front, give credit, and do not monetize it. It's good for learning and might help destigmatize tracing to artists who think they can't do it at all because it's objectively bad/wrong. HOWEVER, despite the fact that I think it's perfectly okay. It's probably dangerous to post traced work online even if you're open about it every step of the way. Like playing with fire yknow? But I'm also open to changing my mind. I'd never really thought about my opinions on the ethics of tracing till now.

Before the context of why you were tracing your art was given, I was honestly kinda applauding the decision, since I've found tracing my own art at times for pose reference or proportion reference can be really helpful, sorta like using bases only better. Edit: I also love how you traced over your own photos to make art- I feel like using our own photos to make faster art or better poses isn't an angle people regularly explore.
@lepreking
@lepreking Жыл бұрын
I agree, I "trace" over my own photos pretty often, but since it's to help me learn, I break them down into simplified shapes instead of just tracing the edges. I think the main difference is that you don't need to credit anyone when it's already your photos/work. Tracing to learn isn't bad, it's just not crediting and profiting off of it

I don’t like tracing but if it’s your own art- why not? You could say you did use your own image just for info but as long as it’s not someone else’s work or as long as your credit it and have permission (from the original artist) if you ever wanna profit from it. I’m unsure how tracing helps only because I haven’t done so myself, but I’ve also heard it can help a bit when doing portraits or need extra guidance in a way. As long as it’s credited or your own art and not stealing- again, why not? Maybe it will help you on your path? Who knows. Have a good day/night everyone. 😊

I can't imagine tracing for YEARS and not showing any improvement. Tracing for profit is disgusting and honestly one of the worst things you can do especially to an artist who isnt well known or is well known in their community but not outside of it. You take away profit that could put food on the table for others just to parade it around and try to make a quick buck by doing so. The way you worded everything felt cohesive and easy to understand. I am very glad you were the person I saw this topic about because I feel I gained alot more knowledge that I might have from another, thank you so much for all the hard work you put into informing others! I am a casual watcher so I am unsure if you have a team working along side you to help with research but if so I appreciate them as well! (the name is covered so i'm not sure plus my spelling is terrible so i apologize for that). just because someone is raised in a Muslim household\country\parents, ect. does not make them an automatic Muslim. yes she may have believed in Allah at some point of her life but as she tweeted herself she serves a goddess now - in islam your not supposed to believe in multiple gods as we believe that Allah is the one and only god. I just wanted that to be out their as a Muslim as I both don't want to have anything related to this person or my religion as again they said themselves how they serve a goddess. also i'm not able to add time stamps at this moment, but I will if I am able to at some point.

Tracing is honestly not a bad way to learn things like poses and such - I know for certain poses, like contortionism, I had to actually go trace how the contortionists moved their bodies in order to learn what was natural and what wasn't - but relying on it as heavily as Pink Cat does is not a good way to expand your growth as an artist. If you never try to draw unassisted, you'll never really get better with your artwork. And I definitely agree, Ponder, that tracing art does give you more time. I have done a few pictures now where I end up doing my rough line art traditionally, then proceed to do the good line art and color digitally. I've spent a minimum of maybe three hours on traditional art, but then the digital art can be anywhere from a half-hour to maybe one and a half, depending on how complex I want my picture to be. Wonderful video as always! :D

I've had to go through this video so slowly because as an Iranian woman, who is also from Shiraz and also left Iran at a similar age (granted, I didn't go to live in the West, and I did return at many points in my life) it's so humiliating repeatedly seeing parts of your identity that is barely represented be used as excuses for frankly absurd behaviour. I find it very interesting however that she chose to include parts of her identity in the character of Pink Cat, such as being a single mom, but refused to represent anything from her genuine cultural origins even as she uses it as a shield. I know very well the struggles of maintaining a connection to your Iranian heritage when there isn't much in-depth sources written about it in English given how underrepresented the nitty gritty of it can be, and I know that as Western disapora she might not know Persian and thus might not be able to look at in-depth sources as well as I would, there are still MANY ways of gaining this information outside of that. Whether it's speaking to her family members or going to visit or speak to the very well established communities of Iranian-Americans or Iranian-Canadians in parts of those countries, there are SO MANY ways to find things to represent about her own heritage, even if they are small, in a way that would be more impactful than her trying to co-opt black culture instead. That's something that really infuriated me about this video. She so clearly doesn't care about the communities she's from beyond surface-level depictions in some of her artwork where she decides to trace from Aladdin or draw a ghutra sometimes. I didn't see anything that felt distinctly 'Iranian' to me, and it sucks given how much she uses it as a defense. It's insulting to see her both refuse to include her culture in ANYTHING in-depth or educate herself on it, and then use it to defend awful behaviour knowing that Iranians are typically more voiceless in the global media because of how often the Iranian government separates them from the rest of the world. It's a privilege that she, as an Iranian-American, probably finds it so easy to ignore even as she throws 'her people' under the bus in some aspect by making us look terrible.

That guy was already a fool for citing Eric Bischoff (who is about as "old man yells at cloud" in wrestling as you can get right now), but it's even funnier when you know that he "copied" his only successful story idea without credit/compensation from a Japanese wrestling company. In other words, "you remind me of another person whose claim to fame was something wholly unoriginal that led to massive financial ruin" was used as a compliment.

If you have a problem drawing an original image to post online daily while being a single mum and running a business simultaneously. Then maybe it’s a sign that you have to cut back a little at the daily art thing. You know instead of plagiarising other artists work.

Absolutely crying that she said she traces because American imperialism yet traced an insane amount of Tank Girl. Like, the UK has so many issues in and of itself, but I fail to see how tracing a British designed character from a comic set in Australia sticks it to America

My opinion on tracing is that it's fine if your using it as practice (I.e. tracing pictures of actual people to improve on anatomy or different body types) and the practiced traced art is not posted anywhere. In that sense it's fine cause your trying to improve or adapt. Tracing for any kind of social or monetary gain is never okay imo.

I do trace other peoples art because I want to learn how to draw in different art styles and combine them (that is if the artist allows that their work can be traced) and I have not posted it online cuz it's practice and I am not comfortable to show my practice work :') Also idk how to trace irl images, it's hard for me for some reason

I also think there is one other sense of “tracing” which is models. Not like fashion models but it’s well known in lots of webtoon series that have to be posted in quick succession base models are used and posed to quickly trace bases, as well as often artists making their own stamps for details like eyes or hair that can be altered for poses in order to keep details looking consistent. Similar this can be done for objects or backgrounds too. In a sense this is a type of tracing that becomes transformative, as it is not solely a point by point “this is mine that I just kinda recolored.” In this way, yes, some creators do make money off of this but it still isn’t just a “I took this from another artist and drew over it,” and while it’s labeled as tracing which can be considered still controversial isn’t necessarily bad as I said requires transformative action/detail to be done (such as adding clothes).

The thing is, when we draw looking at an reference picture, that isn't tracing Tracing is just putting an paper on top of the original image and tracing it Using reference images is mandatory to learn how to draw
@Notatruefurry
@Notatruefurry Жыл бұрын
@plaguedoctorjamespainshe6009 I thought reference was more so you have the ref to the side and you glance at it to better understand how it's supposed to look (I.e. painting a fruit bowl you see in front of you) What I'm trying to talk about is using images and drawing over them. Something I did a while ago was look for a handful of images of people in action poses (it was off a site that was meant to be used for art warm up) and roughly traced over the images to better understand how to create my own action poses and how to incorporate it into my own art style.
@plaguedoctorjamespainshe6009

@@Notatruefurry both can be used as reference Tho in both cases you need to do that with the intention of learning or for some pose or object that won't affect that unique look And generally people who just steal art and trace both do tracing instead of looking the reference because is easier and they also aren't doing it for learning

Tracing photos is legit a skill though so watching you trace your own photo was pretty cool. It's a thing a lot of newbies who are learning using tracing paper stumble with since they try to trace too many extra lines in. Obviously only trace photos you have rights to trace though.

I know this isn't super related to the drama in this video, but... God THANK YOU for explaining pop art to me. Omfg. My art teacher in high school made us do an art pop unit, and I swear she didn't know how to explain anything to us. The only idea I knew was that we needed to take something from pop culture and "repeat it" until it was "transformative." That didn't make... any sense to me. Now I know, based on your description, that the project I failed actually DID meet the specifications of real pop art. (That teacher failed like every single student unless they said they intended to go into art in college. She only passed them, and they got As if they spent hours after school working on their projects... ridiculous).

People like her are EXACTLY why I dont upload my art to printerest, only my products. Im an artist and pinterest is an amazing tool for references, inspiration, color theory and palettes, etc. BUT that also makes it the perfect vehicle for theft. When I was younger I taught myself to draw by drawing straight from other artists work, it gave me a feel for basic shapes and shading. There's nothing wrong with that but what she is doing is so far removed from learning or positive use. Not to mention she doesn't even have a style, no shame in that but when you trace work or heavily rely on others and can't give it your own flare its just low quality, lazy content.

this whole thing feels like an Ace Attorney trial like dead ass Pink Cat's ramblings sound like the actual convicts breakdowns 'n shit also as a quick side bar, you can mimic an artists style without tracing. I've done it multiple times, just by looking at the source material. There's a difference between tracing and taking inspiration, if she wants an artstyle like Jamie Hughlift then just try and copy his style without tracing, and add the "inspirations~✨" she gets from her life.
