This is one of the best vocal mixing tutorials out there. Compression is definitely the hardest part to get right and the fact you started with an easy to use plugin for this (CLA vocals) makes it way more accessible for a beginners. Good job!

Your vocal chain sounds amazing- great tip about ducking the reverb and delay to main vox! I usually automate sends to reverb and delay so it kicks at the end of the phrase, which is a similar effect but this way sounds much cleaner and less automation drawing. Really enjoying this content man looking forward to more

Compressors are for people that don't know how to use eq. They create distortion and crackling when they threshold. They also cause a swelling effect that causes intermodulation distortion from the overlap that is caused. Live, they also raise the noise floor. They are crap! In the early 80's I had an entire rack of them. One day I had an epiphany and tried mixing without them. I couldn't believe the difference in fidelity. I sold them all for near nothing. That is their true worth. I don't use compressors or limiters on anything. Try streaming music after you use them. Your entire mix will fall apart. If you want to hear mixes that are free of them. I will gladly send you some of different genres.

Waves makes a cool plug-in called DeBreath that can speed up the process of taming those breath noises. I've used it mostly on dialog for podcasts, but it will work equally well for singers. I just found your channel a few days ago, and I'm learning a lot. I like your style...clear and to the point.

Just a quick point, Valhalla Vintage Verb has an eq built into it, on the right hand side of the gui. So you don't need to add an eq after the reverb, to eq it, you can do it inside the reverb plugin itself
@iainmcguire71903 жыл бұрын
Soundtoys Echoboy Jnr also has an EQ built into the delay, the high cut and low cut, in the gui, so you can EQ both the reverb and the delay within the plugins themself, rather than adding an EQ after them to do this
@JBorg975 жыл бұрын
DAMN that was so helpful thank you! I did not know that the spacing between plugins on the channel strip is significant
@jamescarson42725 жыл бұрын
U r straight to the point and I love it. Could u go through ur fave plugins in a vid?
@WAZA___3 жыл бұрын
You want your EQ cuts before the reverb and delay plugins...not after. The reason for this is simple. By cutting out or boosting the frequencies you want first, you won’t have as many unwanted tones getting processed and brought out by your reverbs and delays.

Great video, thank you! I've only recently found your channel, but I wish I had found it sooner - your techniques are really helpful and you present them in a really understandable way :) If you are looking for content suggestions, could you please make a video about balancing vocal doubles and BVs? Like how you prefer to group them and process them etc, this is something I'm really struggling with. Thanks again from the UK!

Great video! I always feel like getting vocals good is difficult, and mostly I try running with multiple identical vocal tracks with different effects / formants to try make it sound more full. Yet in this video, it seems so very simple. I've come to realize my biggest problem might be my own vocal-performance when wanting to sing my own songs, and if the vocal performance/recording doesnt sound nearly amazing from the beginning, then ofc. its difficult to get it right :P

Love your videos man! Easily the most helpful stuff I have found on KZbin (and I have seen hundreds if not thousands of them). I will say I there are a lot of extra plugins that you use. While I want to expand my library of plugins, it would be great if you could show similar settings in stock plugins or how to get similar sounds with the stock stuff. Also, it would be awesome to have links to the plugins you use in the description! That would be a huge help, since I am definitely interested in getting more. Keep killin it, Z

Do you have a template for logic that you use?
@theiriscen4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this. Most people on youtube who show how to process vocals start with an already processed vocal. Like you can clearly hear reverb and delay and some compression from the recording stage. That’s confusing in all honesty, dont give those who learn the chance to really hear how things shape out to sound great since vocals sound great from start already. Your video starts with a dry vocal, thats cool.
@vickius4 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I love hearing the dry vocals first. Makes me feel better about my lifeless vocals lol
