Hey Gabe. Thanks for another great lesson. I think Jerry's style was to take relatively simple cord progressions and find new, interesting, and creative pathways of expressing his ideas. His musical vocabulary was huge and that can only come with study, practice, and playing. There is simply no substitute for putting in the hours. Now I wish I could find more of them 😉

I found that learning the Touch of Grey solo note for note was a tremendous eye-opener to the mechanics of how Jerry plays the changes.

Thanks for the video! Also, new 335 sounds fantastic. I go back and forth between my Dano tele and my Collings I-35lc and I-30 being my favorite, do it all guitars. Glad to see the 335 is a great fit for you, and curious if you'll play your LP less and 335 will take the top spot.
@GabrielBergman955 ай бұрын
Thanks Joseph! Dano AND Collings, you’re set haha! Oh yeah, I haven’t put the 335 down. It’s clear and open. But when I need to the more rock and punch, I’ll get the les Paul for sure.

Thanks, Gabriel. 4 years ago, I attended my 1st Dead & Co. show which rearranged my worldview, rendered the Wilco show I attended the week before (my 694,371st) utterly meaningless. Shortly after, I bought my first guitar w/ the thought, "There's no point in learning guitar if you can't improvise in any setting over any song like John Mayer or Jerry Garcia." Nonetheless, a week later, I decided, "Yeah, that's not gonna happen. Lemme stick w/ cowboy chords" ; Four years later, I still don't have the attention span to practice scales. Yet, I find your approach compelling. I'll prob. revert to open chords once I finish this video, but thanks for the momentary boost ;
@GabrielBergman955 ай бұрын
Don’t worry about the scales, the song is the KEY. Cowboy chords will allow you to play most songs! Thanks for the comment Jason!

@@GabrielBergman95 Thanks, Gabriel. I really appreciate it. I glean something new every time I watch one of your videos. I love the way you break down the concept of playing changes - so easy to assimilate!

My saying is if your thinking your stinking, magic starts happening once you can do it as you say “effortlessly”. Learning tunes and playing around with chord-triad voicing options using caged is a fun once you get past the fingering and memorization struggles.
@GabrielBergman955 ай бұрын
Yes, even without the scales, remember the song is the KEY!

Interestingly, especially in regard to Garcia, there are probably thousands of people that can play over the same changes he played over, yet no one can play as he did. Take this song for example: is there anyone that can sonically take you to places in your mind that he did at Cornell playing this song? For me at least, no one can.

Maybe?? But remember don’t compare yourself to Jerry.

NPR = national propaganda radio. Dude that is so cringe at this point of NPR’s death spiral into the jaws of the regime you might as well wear a Shaun hannity fox shirt. I used to work the pledge lines at wnyc probably before you was a wee lad. Very disappointed.
