Beryl, hearing your reaction to Pani Pol made me burst into tears. My grandma used to make this for me all the time, even towards the end of her life when dementia was erasing many parts of her. It was always my favorite thing to eat and I never knew another soul who liked it as much as me. My grandma passed away in 2021 and until recently I didn't even know this was an actual recipe rather than something my grandma had made up for me. I haven't tried making Pani Pol but maybe I will give it a try now knowing how much success you had with it. To me, it's like that riceball Chihiro eats in Spirited Away that makes her cry and cry. Thank you for this.

The Srilankan pancake really reminded me of 'pathishapta' - a dessert we have in West Bengal/Bangladesh which is also a dessert pancake rolled with coconut-jaggery filling. Isn't it just so cool, how we have these same sort of food all over the world with different names! ❤

"Cachorro com ovo"... wow, it's super specific! Very local. I never heard about it here in Rio (southeast region, Brazil). Actually, breakfast is very different depending where you are in Brazil. Rough translation from a Brazilian website: North region: With great indigenous influence, the breakfast of those who live in the north of the country is mainly composed of regional products, such as açaí, pupunha (a kind of palm), coconut and banana. In addition, of course, to cassava, present in tapioca, cakes and flour. Northeast Region: With Portuguese, African and indigenous influences, in the Northeast region the day begins with the aforementioned tapioca, as well as yam, cassava, dried or sun-dried meat, couscous (which can be with milk, egg or just butter), cake roll, and the delicious coalho cheese. Midwest region: In this region, in addition to the culture being linked to indigenous influence, there are also Paraguayan cuisine. Chipa is common and resembles cheese bread. Foforó is similar to tapioca starch biscuits. In the Pantanal region, Quebra-torto is served between 4 and 5 am to workers who will go to the farm and is a dish composed of: carreteiro rice, cassava, eggs, farofa and can be accompanied by milk with burnt sugar, coffee or sugarcane juice. Southeast region: Influenced mainly by Italian and Portuguese cuisine, it is common to find on the menu: grilled bread, cheese bread, cheeses, sausages, iced mate or natural juices. South region: With a strong German and Italian influence, the traditional table in the South region is always very plentiful. It includes sausages, jellies, jams, cheeses and cuca - a fruit cake with sweet and crunchy farofa on top. But bread rolls will always be one of our favorites for breakfast.

Awesome video. I've had the itty-bitty pancakes and they're divine. Beryl it's not at all strange to eat raw scallions. Growing up in the 50s 60s and 70s scallions were often served on a relish/appetiser tray. We'd cut the green shorter and use the remainder for garnishing and also cut the roots off. Salt was nearby and sometimes a small plate with a mound of salt to lay the onion in. Some ate even the greens and some didn't which is why they were cut shorter so as to reduce waste. The pancake rolls look awfully good but really I'd try any one of these recipes.

Even pizza we usually eat with knife and fork hahah I think brazilians just hate to get their hands dirty.

I'm Brazilian and yes, I've never heard of this cachorro com ovo, the most common thing across the country is to eat bread with coffee for breakfast

Beryl, not that you need any help in this department, but walnuts look like a brain (when you open the walnut shell up) and they happen to have so so so many benefits to our brains. Perhaps you'll find them more palatable if you toast them on a medium-low dry skillet just until you start to smell the nutty aroma. It may be the tannins (same thing in tea) that makes you not care for walnuts. But they are so good for us and I hope you grow to love them. Adding the tiniest sprinkle of salt after toasting helps immensely in making them all the more tasty. I loved this video and cannot wait to make these. Well-done as always, Beryl.

The orange cous cous has blown my mind, also the Sri Lankan lady needs a podcast. I could listen to her talk about the weather

We also have a similar dish like the srilankan Pani pol pancake. It is known as patisapta .The only difference is cinnamon is an optional ingredient in it , not mandatory to add . It's a famous winter dish here in west Bengal, India.

I’m really happy to see that I’m not alone in my green onion obsession. People tell me I’m crazy when I reveal that I eat at least 6 BUNCHES a week.

I recently discovered your website and it has already become my favorite place to look for a recipe idea! They are sorted and presented really well and your instructions are concise and easy to follow. I hope you will add more recipes of your older videos as well... but regardless, thank you for creating such an amazing platform, it makes trying out new recipes from other countries much less intimidating 😊

Oooh! I love these behind the scenes! Not just the overhead shots of what you're cooking, Beryl, but also seeing you in your kitchen is cool. I like not just hearing the little insights when you are trying the recipe, but seeing it happen as you're making the dish is just kind of neat.

Beryl, I suggest that you watch an episode of “No Reservations” with Anthony Bourdain where he goes to Saudi Arabia to experience the food scene. It totally changed my world view as it applied to Saudi Arabia.

I mean, Beryl you did a GREAT job with the rolling. Mine still aren't even close to being that good looking- after doing it for years lol. While this is a great breakfast (Kudos to Eshi for that great intro) in my home this is mostly a tea time snack. You wanna know a GREAT (spicy) Sri Lankan breakfast is Kiribath (Milk Rice) .Its Chef's Kiss. Try it sometime.

I'm eating my favourite comfort meal atm and it's something I've come up with by myself so I was wondering about maybe having an episode where people submit their own dishes? Like ones that don't necessarily have a history to them but are just something you thought of once that really works for your palate.
