Time to clean up my language and speak carefully. I've noticed over the years that when I'm in the habit of using vulgar language, I am much more rude and less patient to others, and I'm less careful with my behavior in general. Heck, I struggle to remember proper words at all. When I make active efforts to use only clean and proper language, things fall into place, I literally speak more sophisticated English, I'm more likely to read, to be thoughtful and considerate, etc. The experiment that Dr. Peterson discusses here and the conclusion that our words construct our perception makes a lot of sense when I apply it to what I noticed a long time ago in my own life.

I agree. I have spoken to strangers and they notice that I use different vocabulary words than they are used to hear and call me “articulate” and I couldn’t agree more. When you use words like that, people will listen to you. But, we should also be careful that we are using those words in a correct manner.

@@angrytedtalks that’s misleading in English. In Greek it is the word was with God and the word was (a) god. Previous mention of God has the definite article whereas the latter doesn’t. Many times in the bible, figures are referred to as a ‘god’ metaphorically in their authority/power, but of course never going against the core message that there is only one true God, God almighty, God the father that is. His sons (Jesus included) are but his creation.

@@lets_wrapitup Greek isn't a holy language, neither is Latin. The exact meaning of the phrase could well have been intended to be ambiguous or pure literary poetry in an allegorical sense. In Judaism the name of G-d is the word (יהוה). Jesus is just a derivative of Joshua.

This is why freedom of speech is so critical. Our words direct our perceptions of reality. Edit: Also, be careful of what music you sing to yourself. If you're singing passionately, even just in your own head, those words you're singing can become your reality.

I would argue that music only resonates with you for you to sing it passionately if it already reflects some element of your truth to begin with. I had a high school writing teacher who would start debates over a variety of topics, topics that no high school teacher today could. Gun control, abortion etc..... She would let the class divide itself up, pro on one side, against on the other. Then, when the verbal debate was over, she would tell the pro side that they had to write a paper as an advocate for the against and the against people a paper advocating the pro position. It wasn't until years later that I realized what a brilliant teacher she was. It helped me over the years to see both sides, but it also helped me to plug the holes in my debates on a given topic by seeing the weaknesses in my arguments.

Interestingly the same thing happens just from exposing yourself to written word enough, even if at first you don't agree, and especially if you get into debate. However it's not as noticable with spoken word. Because you can ignore spoken word. With written word however you first need to process what's being said, and then write a response to it. I've tested this pretty thoroughly. It's like a form of guided self talk.
@JonathanMarcy

If used for good, well all's well. But if used for political moves, or selfish self interest, or towards special interests, you wind up with divergents. Eventually groups of thought form, and can develop into an identity war in a way. Especially for younger thinkers. You can end up with very unhealthy thoughts, which as you know develop into behaviors. You'd be surprised for instance, how many minors think they're trans as the result of online discussions, where before they never even questioned their gender, and had no prior reason to even think about it, only to regret their decision later.

This was a hard one for me to break free from … my mum has a tendency of telling me how I’m feeling or what I’m doing… for example she would tell me I’m verbally abusing her, when I’m just calmly (okay maby when I was younger I was less calm haha, but only shouted back when she raised the tone more as an unconscious thing. Police aggression training was a life saver in that sense) trying to communicate a point about my own feelings and perspective on things that frustrates her about me and my choices/daily life stuff and the predicament I’m currently in with my health and finding work which is obviously stressful not just for me but her too. But all through my childhood when any kind of pressure was put on her by me, Conscious or not, and I would try to explain how she was taking it out on me, she would tell me I can’t dictate how she sees things so to just stop it. 22 and I’m starting to realise it’s more complicated and she obviously didn’t know how to handle these situations effectively, or a lot of the time also just unwilling to even try understand another side of things if it doesn’t align with her perspective about me or how I use to be towards her. I’ve given up trying to build back my relationship for now, since I don’t think it’s the right time for that, and also I have no idea how to break free from this without “blaming her”. (I mean I do and I don’t actually blame her for this, since I understand she just didn’t know how it was making me feel and act and I also did still stop caring about her outbursts when she showed me she didn’t care to understand my side, so I didn’t help that stress and pressure …but I also at some point growing up even stopped discussing when things hurt my feelings completely or if she was miss understanding how something was due to all this since I thought it was my responsibility to deal with that feeling and not theirs, this also fed into friendships and relationships for years), but we can’t even have one conversation nowadays without her bringing up the conversation to how I’m applying all this pressure on her, and I honestly started to think after the last one she would hit me if I didn’t leave exactly at that point… it’s really bad rn since she’s also divorcing. It would be nice to close that chapter off and build a new relationship instead. But I can’t make her see something she’s not willing to look at. So for now I’m happy just being aware of the fact that she’s just taking out her own stress and anger about the current situation in our family on me. Least I understand and take it a bit less personally these days.

I noticed this with myself when I’ve had to write papers on a view I didn’t choose. I think it’s caused by having to do more research than one typically does on something they disagree with. Most people who willingly research a topic approaches it with an opinion already formed, so that research results in a confirmation bias. People typically don’t research something looking to be wrong but rather to confirm they were right. So it would make sense how that would happen. I always try to the best of my ability to approach a topic without any biases & to look at it from all sides. It helps to keep me open minded. Also every side believes their side is the right side. So there must be some legitimacy to every side being right in some way, not just one side being undeniably right.

That is very, very interesting. It shows the power of words and the need to believe what is true, and not what's convenient.
