Yeah I think he breezed over that scene too quickly. That training session was pure gold. It highlighted Dooku's council, and most importantly, his skill. He was able to easily fend off this version of Grievous despite it only being training. His words also solidify Grievious' tactics.

One thing to mention Thor that the Ghost Hand arc is a subtle foreshadowing to Anakin's redemption. The deformed male warriors returning to the village made the wives quite fearful but a child, however still sees one warrior as his father despite the machinations the Techno Union did to them, a subtle nod to Luke Skywalker seeing the light in his father.

Yes indeed. Mistakes I think they made: 1. Grievous encountering Obi Wan nearly every time he engages in battle. "And I would have gotten away with it, if it wasn't for that meddling Kenobi!" 2. Dooku meeting Anakin every other week, significantly reducing the impact of ROTS. 3. The Chip nonsense. This completely ruins the gravitas and brilliance as well as tragedy of Order 66 and the fall of the Jedi. It's a brilliant evil plan and legal executive order that makes it incredibly powerful in ROTS. The chip nonsense is unnecessary and does not conform to the movie canon. 4. Individualising TOO MANY clones. The clone troopers should only be as good as their commanders. They obey any order without question. They are shown to be Clone Stormtroopers once the "moral" Jedi are done away with. I can understand some Clone Commandos being grown and bred differently and a few ARCs like Rex. But the entire army in the show seems to be made of individuals with personalities and ideas who often disobey orders and are insubordinate. 5. THE CIS CONSTANTLY LOSING. The show makes it feel like the Republic didn't even need the Clone Army and the war could have been won 2 weeks after AOTC. The CIS should be a formidable organisation with massive public support thanks to impassioned speeches of Dooku and questions about corruption in the Republic. The Jedi should be struggling and taking loses, tragically being thrown onto the front lines by the Republic. Grievous should be besting some Jedi Masters to make him a threat. The CIS should be WINNING on merit through superior droid forces in some cases and better tactics to create a stalemate. 6. The show does not show us enough JEDI. This is the golden era of Jedi. We should be seeing LOTS of Jedi Masters like Master Di, Stass Allie, Shaak Ti, Adia Gallia, Kit Fisto, Mace Windu etc on the front line. Many of these Jedi should prove to be the shifting of the tide in battles whilst others should also tragically fall. 7. NOT ENOUGH AAYLA SECURA. I think that I don't need to elaborate why. 8. NOT ENOUGH AAYLA SECURA. This is so important it deserves an additional bullet point. 9. Not enough young Jedi of Anakin's age to compare how he acts versus others when it comes to romance, attachment and dealing with difficult battle situations. 10. Not showing us Labrynth of Evil (a great book) as a feature length show. 11. Not showing more Clone Commandos because they look cool. 12. Going off on tangents. Absolutely zero need to make the show about Maul. Is Darth Maul a great character? HELL YES. But a show about Maul should be set BEFORE TPM. And not in the Clone Wars. So many episodes went off to cover the Nightsisters, or children being stolen by Sidious. But this show should be about THE WAR. Conflicts and machinations. 13. NOT ENOUGH AAYLA SECURA DAMMIT.

For me, though I loved it as a kid I really don't like the 2003 Clone Wars. I love how Grevious was portrayed in it and how it showed some of the earlier days in the conflict and wish they took inspiration from that for the modern Clone Wars (though at the very beginning it was coined to be some sort of continuation from it anyway), but the 2003 version I just find a bit uninspiring, dull and lackluster. It’s action is so jarringly over the top and exaggerated it amounts to ridiculous nonsensical bs for me (which like the transformer and fast and furious films just isn’t my thing. I don’t find it interesting or engaging on any level sorry) and it doesn't have a lot going for it in plots, dialogue or character development. I also would say the show wasn't darker than it's 2008 counterpart. I think the tone doesn't vary as much because yes it's a hell of a lot shorter, but Clone Wars 2008 gets a lot darker in the later seasons and has some shit in the early seasons as well but Maul decapitating people, killing kids, his brother Savage ramming jedi with the spikes on his head, suicides, murder, execution, slavery, all of Umbara and the Mortis ark, most of it is far darker than the 2003 show ever got. And unfortunately on my rewatch of the micro series a couple years back, it was just a chore to get through and ultimately very boring and uninteresting for me and I actually found myself skipping ahead every few minutes to eventually turn it off and try to finish it another day. I get why some people like you love it though and it has a couple of things I really dig in it but ultimately I wouldn't recommend it if you're someone not all about action

I hate when some fans try to limit the power of The Force and tech in Star Wars. And their biggest gripe is this version of Grievous and The Jedi/Sith (with Ventress). Like it's the closest thing we got to a Legends timeline showcase of how powerful The Force and Star Wars technology is during times of crisis and war. I don't understand how someone can be content with space knight wizards fighting with laser swords only being able to knock over things and block blaster fire. Pathetic. Someone that has dedicated years in training with The Force should be able to perform truly amazing and terrifying feats of strength; not tip over a vehicle and run really fast...

Watching this iteration of the Clone Wars from beginning to end, just after seeing AoTC and waiting for the eventual release of Revenge of the Sith, was absolutely phenomenal as a kid back then. And being that it did air on Cartoon Network, seeing episodes of this spliced in between commercials for shows like Dragon Ball Z on Toonami or Justice League/Unlimted was like a dream come true for 8 yo me. I even remember the final time this series was aired on Toonami on a Saturday night just as RoTS came out and actually the day before I saw the film itself. Seeing EP3 with this entire series fresh in my mind was so cool because I saw what happened and lead up to the film. The closest thing that's come to thar excitement for me would be Infinity War/Endgame respectively. I loved the over the top action this show had, where sometimes dialogue wasn't entirely needed to tell a short story. One such example of that which comes to mind are the underwater battle with Kit Fisto and Mace Windu fighting an entire army of super battle droids. Which makes sense since the creator of this show did create Samurai Jack after all (a wonderful series btw). While I do love the more recent Clone Wars series alot too over the past few years, this series has always stuck with me cause of that build up to Revenge of the Sith, wheras with the other I wasn't too interested in for awhile back in the day cause I felt it was unnecessary because we know what is ultimately going to happen and there just wasn't that anticipation because TCW released after the films were over (at the time of course).

I mean, he did destroy continuity within the EU and the films, he butchered the mandalorians, watered down Alpha-17 and Grievous, made Ahsoka live past the original trilogy, brought in the world between worlds and gave us without a doubt the worst episode of the Mandalorian that relied on nostalgia more than anything. 2003 version: Shows the Jedi at the height of their power, how they should be fighting, shows the true scale of the clone wars and the desperation of their struggle. Though shorter, it makes a point to cut to the heart of things with missions being related to winning the war and just how powerful these characters truly are. 2008 version: Tells the personal stories of the characters, gives them depth and make us understand them more in the sense of who they truly are. We come to know them, love them and admire with the episodic type adventures being even more random than in 2003 to spread to places not touched by the previous series. But with their strengths, they both lack in areas where they are necessary for the story to reach its greatest height. Replacing one with the other is a mistake but combining the two makes a perfect vision of what the clone wars were like. The Republic had their victories but the CIS was a major threat. Grievous is not a tool or a laughingstock but a holy terror, Anakin acts like himself but we can see his growth to become a Jedi Knight and we see the relationships of the characters develop while the action of desperation of the situation sets in. This is what we needed for the Clone Wars, the combination of both, not one over the other.

That could more or less be easily slain if you have enough brute strength or if you are a little deceptive which undercuts the point of them even training and using the Force. In the 2003 version, you see what they would truly be like, why the Mandalorians saw them as the greatest warriors in the galaxy. After decades of tapping into the Force, gaining a mastery over your own body and mind such levels of fluidity, speed and strength would make sense more than how they are portrayed in both the movies and the 2008 tv series. Primarily for the fact that such levels would not be translatable like Palpatine and Mace Windu fight where both were basically moving so fast that Anakin could not even keep up. Its how masters would fight and when it comes to Yoda and Palpatine. The fights would be faster and more intense than what we saw in Episode III. So no, its not the other way around and its not ridiculously overpowered, these are the Jedi at their prime. They have lost their way but their strength in the force is still there and the 2003 version more accurately depicts that.

Agreed. As long as you take the exaggerations and feats as the product of rumor and myth in terms of canonicity, it lines up better with Revenge and is a fun and stylish stand alone that does more with 2d facial expressions than all the CGI and voiced dialogue in the world could do for the latter clone wars series. Due to nostalgia people will say the cgi series is better, but I’d argue the 2d one is superior - and it didn’t need to re-write a single character to pull it off, which more than can be said for the cgi series.

It’s one of the best Star Wars shows ever, next to Star Wars robot chicken. It stays true to the movies and show the progression of anakin and Obi Wan from their AOTC selves to their ROTS selves. It has great animation, action and ties in perfectly with the prequels, unlike TCW. There’s a lot of foreshadowing of anakin turning to the dark side in ways more subtle and powerful than TCW could ever manage. Hell, this show is the reason why TCW even exists since it was GL’s fondness for this show that led to the creation of TCW.

The only time I saw him kill a jedi without any restrictions was agaisnt a padawan who just rose to knighthood (a very reckless one btw) and not because of his skill but due to bringing a blaster and shot him when he locked his lightsaber.and that was After he got utterly beaten and hummillated *in his own house*

oh, that's simple - because TCW WAS saturday morning cartoon. We didn't need Ashoka (or any child padawan arround Anakin) in that show. We didnt need resurection of Maul. We didn't need droid adventures. We didnt need droid army behaving like toddlers. Yeah, it had some darker shit in later seasons, but overall it wasn't anything special. People just like to pretend that this was an "amazing SW" because showrunners covered everything in tons of cheap fanservice. And people for some reason really like cheap fanservice (there's a reason why people in general prefer KOTOR1 over 2 despite the former being just slight rehash of the original trilogy, and why most people started to dislike TFA not after watching it, but after disney started throw shit at fans after TLJ).

@@makairidah8354 after release of TFA there weren't many voices that this movie is bad because it's a rehash of ANH. For most people, it was almost like a good thing, because it was familiar - plot was just one big fanservice for them. I know, because I was amongst very few that didn't really like it from the beginning and heard way to many excuses or straight up fanboism. Everything changed after TLJ, when almost everyone started to have problem with TFA. Not because they've finally opened their eyes, but because TLJ was just mocking them with it's "subversive" fanservice and disney attacked everyone that disliked the movie. If you want further proof, look at issue with palpatine clones - people are mad at disney for including that in rise of skywalker, but they were happy that this same bullshit was in the EU (or multiple clones of deathstar for that reason, just to mention original Eclipse Super star destroyer). And the same happend with KOTOR - it WAS just rehash of original trilogy with little subversion here and there (HK being copy of 3PO, but he can kick ass, or rehash of cloud city scene - Malak revveals that we're the sith in the same manner that vader revealed he is Lukes father). But people like it more than way more nuanced KOTOR2, that instead of blowing up another superweapon possessed by the half-mechanical sith, decided to ask if Revan really was a bad guy, what's the nature of the force or how jedi banished our protagonist and later on tried to kill him (een when we follow light side) not because he was bad, but because they were affraid of his power. And why they liked KOTOR1 more? Because it was more fan-service'y, more fammiliar. and that brings me back to the TWC, which was unbearable for me. Way to many fanservice, way too much kid-focused and just ugly to look at (I'm not a fan of 3d animation, it always feel cheap to me). We are shitting on bringing back palpatine without explanation, but bringing back maul is totally fine, "because they're expanding his story" or excuses like that. And why is that? Because he's familliar and people like cheap fanservice, not because they care if the story is coherent or not. If they wanted to explore him, they could, I dont know, do a flashback episode about his bacstory? But that wouldnt allow to make another fanservice'y fight against obi wan, so yeah. Sorry for this little rant but videos like that reminds me why we cant have nice stories in SW. Because people would nitpick on show with 3-mins episodes and ignore lot bigger issues in seven seasons long full fledged series. I'm not saying that you're one of those people, it just happend that your comment provoked me to express myself lol

Finally, we get to talk about Legends! All I can really add here is to point out how consistent the characters are with their movie counterparts. Anakin is dark and brooding, his relationship with Padme is straining and stressful, Grevious is truly a Jedi killer worthy of assassination, and Sidious is constantly one step ahead of everyone at all times Ut seems in the new show, they tried to "fix" everything that people hated about the writing in the prequels, and in doing so, created a show that doesn't feel like it's actually set in the same universe. They've had eight seasons to explain all the little details in Revenge of the Sith, the perfect blueprint to expand upon in the form of 2d Clone Wars, and they've done literally everything but In the case of the new Grevious specifically, I think he suffered from a combination of the she range of the target audience being lowered, since everyone at the studio has convinced themselves that "cartoons are just for kids", a lack of a disposable cast as a result of more closely following a specific set of characters, and a laser focus on the line "General Grevious will run and hide, like he always does" while forgetting the line " Your lightsabers will make a fine addition to my collection", implying the things he does to Jedi before running and hiding

For your gripes on the writers, keep in mind that Lucas actually came up with most of this stuff- all the explanations and dissonance with the originals you have a problem with come from Lucas himself for the most part. The writers just helped him execute it. So don't give them too harsh of a rap, they did the best with what he gave them- but they were still Lucas's intentions and ideas a lot of the time.

Killing several Jedi, overrunning the Republic's defenses and taking Palpatine, maybe even a slight conversation between Palps and Grevious, revealing Sidious to us, although we all know it. Dooku kneeling before Palpatine as he sits in the chair and enjoys the site of battle, much like how he does in Episode VI. Even if the battle of Coruscant is just an episode, or even half an episode will do, they should send that off with a bang, lead it up to Episode 3, plus some bits during it.

Reasons why the 2003 Clone Wars was the best Clone Wars series: 1. It weaves better in with the movies. 2. Anakin feels like Anakin is supposed to be. 3. There's no inhibitor chip that makes the clones execute Order 66. 4. The CIS is a legitimate threat. 5. Anakin doesn't have an apprentice. 6. No rivalry between Grievous and Obi-Wan or Dooku and Anakin. 7. Anakin's character arc is smoother. 8. The action sequences are more creative and with more weight. 9.

@@darkjediknight2923 well, I was GONNA say "wow...I uh, got nothing... that was perfect..." But then I saw your MAUL bullet point, and I must disagree to an extent. While I do agree a pre ep1 Maul story(ies) would be great, I thought the controversial decision to bring him back worked well, and led to some of the great storylines and episodes in the show, and perhaps all of star wars... in fact, though I wasnt a super fan of REBELS, Maul's involvement in that series also led to some great story arcs... it really deepened his rivalry with Kenobi besides "you cut me in half, I want revenge" what with him killing his loved one right in front of him (her name is escaping me right now for some reason), it led to him taking over Mandalore, it led to the great apprentice story arc in Rebels, which also intertwined with one of the best, most emotional saber duels of Darth Vader vs Ashoka (still gives me "the feels" and I just watched it again yesterday in fact lol), and finally, though initially I was disappointed because it was so short, it ultimately led to one of the absolute best light saber "duels" in the ENTIRE universe, canon or non-canon, Maul vs Kenobi on Tattooine for the last time.... They took a one note character that just looked cool and did cool things in Ep1 and gave him such depth and character growth, that it ,,well, led to like I said, some of the absolute BEST stuff star wars had to offer... the emotion of kenobi holding maul after their quick battle, and the breakdowns of their quick fight (saber styles, same one used to kill Kenobi's master, after goading him in with Qui Gon's form 4, leading to the same move that killed him in Ep1), was star wars gold But yeah, other than that, u really NAILED it, hun... and FINALLY, a star wars fan that agrees with me about the clones... I barely care about ANY of them, even Rex... they're friggin clones, they're all the same, regardless, and especially this final season of the clone wars, using up 4 full episodes on one of their story arcs, it was a waste IMO.. @@masterrserch3971 "It's treason then." Firstly I thank you that everything else I said was viewed as perfect! As for Maul, don't get me wrong. I LIKE Maul a lot as a character. I wish we could see a movie/series about his character before his death in TPM. However I feel it detracts from the menacing Maul we saw in TPM and the loss of Qui Gon and skill of Obi Wan to simply have Maul live. I mean, at this rate, Dooku's head floats into a chute and is rejoined to some droid body and hey presto Dooku lives to fight in the "Rebels" show! I just feel that Maul shouldn't have been Maul. They had the ability to have other CIS heroes showcased. E.g. Durge. Or else they could have done something like this: 1. After TPM, Palpatine/Sidious has a problem. His trained apprentice Maul has been killed. An unforeseen complication. Sidious comes across the concept of cloning. He attempts to have Maul cloned which fails as it leads to an unstable warrior with no control. This clone is who we see in TCW and he gets killed as we see his crime syndicate faction is merely used by Sidious to show the Empire's success when the Empire cracks down on crime instantly unlike the corrupt Republic. I also wasn't really a fan of Rebels (where the Empire pretty much loses every week to this band of about 5 people.) The point is that it cheapens Maul to just have him live. And makes the lightsaber seem powerless. The entire point is if you cut someone in half, if you chop their head off - they're dead. This isn't a hand we are talking about - and in the hand case - we see Luke, Windu and Dooku all struggle with the loss of one hand. Cutting your body in half will kill you. Nothing can stop that. Anakin would have died in ROTS if he hadn't got immediate medical attention and even then he became "more machine now than man". Maul was cut in two AND fell down the infamous bottomless shaft. That is just death. At this rate, Dooku will turn up alive since the burning Invisible Hand somehow landed on Coruscant where some rubbish collector fused his head with a droid corpse leftover from the invasion! I do not doubt that the Mandalore takeover story was interesting - but could have been achieved by someone else in his place. Actually it would have been interesting if it was Dooku instead. Dooku has charisma in the movies and great arguments against corruption. And seeing an old man defeat a supposed Mandalorian warrior would have been interesting. I AGREE on the clones. I really don't understand why they focused on making the clones individuals - when they are meant to be virtual automatons. At least they should have given us independent ARCs and Commandos with grunt troopers in the background. And then focus on JEDI. They should have shown us hundreds of Jedi characters. So much potential wasted. MORE AAYLA SECURA.

Same way that I would hope that people would respect George's work and not have Palpatine be alive post ROTJ. Throwing anyone into a Death Star reactor is certain death. Especially when said Death Star also gets vaporised shortly after. But of course there are those who don't respect that vision. As I said, I do like Maul as a character. I loved the prequels. I also love democracy just like Palpatine! So agree to disagree. Just wish we had George's sequels as films. And more Aayla Secura dammit!

Grievous' fight scenes were done with masterful directing with superb build up and suspense. It was done with as little dialogue as possible and is the epitome of "show, don't tell." It was built up as if Grievous' presence is near or even equal to the terror evoked by Vader. Tartakovsky's Samurai Jack style just perfectly fits here since Star Wars' inspiration was the Kurosawa films and it's great even after all this time.

Two things. First: yay, Thor is talking about the Clone Wars micro-series; it's great! I love TCW, but it gets _way_ too much focus. Can we get more of the Clone Wars Multimedia Project now? (For those that don't know, this was all the comics, novels, video games, and the micro-series that told a cohesive and near-complete story of the Clone Wars era before the TCW retcons.) Maybe this will be a gateway to Thor finally giving some much-needed love to the Old EU. :) And second, it couldn't have been a Kyber Crystal, Thor. The term didn't exist until the TCW episode "A Test of Strength" in 2012 (being separate from the Kaiburr Crystal), several years after this episode was made. And even then they didn't behave like the Kyber crystals in the Disney Canon; they weren't power sources until Disney retconned how lightsabers functioned.

@@Vandicoup Oh, sure, I have no issue with people discussing TCW right now because of Season 7 airing. I just mean in general. In a lot of places, like here, if people weren't talking about the movies the were talking about TCW. Which is a shame, because there's _so much more out there_ when it comes to Star Wars.

@@AzureKnight2 Oh, I gotcha now. Thanks for specifying. To me, it's always been TCW & the movies--that's also what George has gone on to state himself and I'm with that 100% but I also agree that there's so much other cool stuff out there too such as CW, elements of the EU, comics, games, and more! :)

The reason Mace Windu doesn’t duel Grievous is because he has his own, quite powerful form of lightsaber combat. Grievous is constantly learning and replicates his enemies’ moves. Once Mace Windu begins to fight Grievous, he realizes that if Grievous could learn and replicate Windu’s form, he would become even more unstoppable.

Thor, I've been meaning to ask you this since it's something that I have discussed before with some friends of mine. Do you find it sometimes jarring for Anakin's personality in The Clone Wars to be radically different for that in Attack of the Clones since that series starts after that movie? Also I still dont understand how Anakin could have had a padawan, since I never pictured him having one in Episode 3, since the council clearly didnt trust him and had little faith in him.
@thorskywalker
@thorskywalker 4 жыл бұрын
It is rather jarring the way Anakin is in the new (2008) Clone Wars. I find the Anakin from the 2003 series to be much more in line with the movie version. And it is a little odd that he had a padawan... even though, yes, I obviously do love the character of Ahsoka as well as the newer series.
@bluehero-96
@bluehero-96 4 жыл бұрын
Your distrust is not misplaced. Ahsoka's apprenticeship really does contradict Anakin's relationship with the council as well as the characteristics of all involved. As for his personality TCW is really a surface level whitewashing, or rather knightwashing, of Anakin's heroism to make him more of a normal hero and not the prelude to Darth Vader.

For me i feel like personally the micro series and the 2008 are sorta supposed to blend together like it goes volume 1 of the micro series then the 2008 is filler then volume 2 but because of the new season of the 2008 series muddles its continuity

IMO this Clone Wars is superior to TCW. The villains are threatening, there are stakes, I feel. Also it actually shows important things like Anakin's knighthood and the Battle of Coruscant/Palpatine's abduction, not just filler like droid arcs. CW Anakin is also far more like Hayden's Anakin than Lantar's. He even sounds more like him.

Mat Lukas (CW Anakin) is spot on! And they were not afraid to make him more like movie Anakin while also make him a badass. Matt Lanter is really good, but he sounds much older than Anakin should sound.

2003 clone wars is still one of my favorite star wars media. Everything is so over exaggerating, the choreography is amazing and massive battles really feel like half of the galaxy is fighting. It was what I was missing in disney star wars, just massive space battles, armies clashing. While I love Original trilogy I don't particulate like the setting, I'm a bit tired of underdog stories, where small resistance is engaging gorilla warfare and battles take on a lot smaller scale.

I agree with your synopsis wholeheartedly!!!It was the jump-scare horror element,that showed the Jedi as prey and not hunters,that made Grievous such a compelling antagonist..AND,the fact that he didn't talk at all (to the Jedi)when stalking them,made him more like Michael Myers!

Too bad that Anakin and Grievous did not meet for the first time until Revenge of the sith, otherwise it would have been very interesting to see them clash blades at least once....oh well. If Grievous from 2008 and onward would have been as intimidating as the 2003 version then he easily would have gotten a B rating as a character.

I had forgotten how great the original Clone Wars was. When it first aired I watched it w/my children who were then the same age I was growing up during the Empire/Jedi era. We were hyped! The Book was released a few weeks before the movie. My brother worked at a second hand CD shop & loaned us Revenge on audiobook. The week before the premiere we listened all the way up util the Fall of Anakin. We stopped the disk & returned it to my brother. We all hit the Midnight premiere a few days later. The timing was perfect. That is how you Hype a movie. It was great.

The 2003 Clone Wars and the other CW EU content really did do well in bridging the gap between AOTC and ROTS, developing all the characters really well especially Anakin. You actually see his transition from whiny rebellious padawan to war hero Jedi Knight and how his relationship changes with Obi-Wan. IMO the continuity there was better before TCW 2008 came in and messed it up a lot. Now it takes a lot of suspension of disbelief for why Ahsoka is never mentioned for example (because she didn't exist). How Anakin was knighted and matured really quickly after AOTC and had an apprentice for quite some time in between movies and not mention her after just sounds fishy as opposed to him maturing slower over time and earning Knighthood the hard way. But overall continuity was tight. Shaak Ti's deleted scene (which was non-canon even then) referenced her failure to save Palpatine here. The novelization mentions Jabiim and Aargonar (important battles for Anakin). Finally dialogue from on screen, in the still canon movie, references EU events in Boz Pity, Saleucami and Cato Neimodia. It was all connected really and the series' ending leads right into ROTS.

To be fair- most of the stuff you mentioned were all ideas George Lucas came up with. The writers of TCW 2008 just helped him execute it. George is still the main guy coming up with this stuff and adding it to the canon- all of the gripes you have mainly come from his choices. Keep that in mind.

Tom Geytenbeek not all. Keep in mind, George was already an older man who wanted to retire from Star Wars and focus on other things even before TCW. Not saying he wasn’t involved much but clearly Filoni had a hand in plenty decisions too. Also, keep in mind George also worked with Genndy on 2003 CW.
