I'm SO happy you featured Egor! He practiced with my father's freediving school for a bit - he's a really great guy and a very competent diver. The divers he was diving with under the ice are also excellent divers and even better people. They only dive with those people that they trust to be safe. It's surreal watching friends be featured on your channel! And please don't listen to the negativity in your comments - your forté might be scuba diving, but by posting about freediving and reacting to those videos, you are also learning and widening your own scope of understanding. So keep on doing that!

Hello im a masterfreediver I've been freediving in most of Florida's deeper springs and sinks my deepest freedive is 46 meters done at warm mineral spring. The only thing's egor has done wrong that I can see is you never dive alone yes scuba divers was there but for free divers you actually need a dive safety close to you when doing recovery breaths just in case shallow water black out happens or a black out at depth scuba divers usually can't go straight up to surface and yes after recovered you can use snorkel.i love your channel here on youtube, its always great to know much as possible about the people you dive around. im always asking questions when I meet scuba divers at dive sites for this reason. im all about safety and looking forward to more of your videos.
@androopr
@androopr 2 жыл бұрын
You are right about needing a freediving safety- Egor is a long time dive buddy of mine. We always play the camera angles and selectively edit out the safety divers floating around. (for example I was there for all of the ice clips with a few others friends, but only see me in a few clips). Egor can clarify for the clips I wasn't there on with the scuba divers but it's almost certainly the same case 😁

Depending on the length of the dive, when you surface from longer dives it’s necessary to do hook breaths to prevent blacking out, in that case you wouldn’t place the snorkel back in mouth. If it’s a causal dive and you know you’re not pushing the limits placing the snorkel back in the mouth instantly is normally okay!

If you were a proficient free diver and you did a risk assessment of each element of that ice dive I think you would square it up with a probability of safe. Good weather top side, no current, shallow dive, excellent viz, heavy insulated suit and exit marked by a person in the water. Weakest link is probably the friend yet as long as he is not have eyes for your missus should be ok :)

Well done guys. A month on and he now has 899 subscribers. As for the risk of breaking through the hole with an axe, the guy filming on top of the ice probably had an axe himself to break through if things went wrong. They could have set a safe time like 1 minute where he would break it if Egor hadn't managed to. It's basically made to look like a life or death situation for shock value. Like when escapologists leave it till the last second to escape a sealed tank of water etc. That's my theory anyway.

hahaha, hay Woody! when i took my ice diving course, the instructor was just getting back from his morning swim in the lake, as we showed up for owe certification dives in the same lake. it was -20 on the surface with windchill. he had two access points in the ice he used for his swim, from one hole to another. haha, and yes 7mm wet suits only were allowed for the dives, no drys for us! he wanted to prove to us that's all you need to dive ice. the group did a herd dive and had a 40min hockey game with a floating puck, 4 on 4 with the instructor as the referee. the game was a blast and not cold at all with a water temp 34F. (quit warm compared to the surface temp) all passed the course. and yes it was a full course not just the fun part.

You take the snorkel out when diving so that if you black out it doesnt keep your mouth open and allow you to suck in more water. You put the snorkel back in prior to surfacing incase the water on the surface is choppy so you don't suck in water on your first breath.

Most freedivers use a basic snorkel which does not have a float valve to prevent water filling it. Otherwise with a rental shop snorkel it's like you got a little balloon strapped to you. If you keep your lungs full while diving, you can clear the snorkel on your exhale. There is technically some "dead space" where the snorkel has some of your exhaled air but it is minimal. Often I will use the snorkel rather than popping my head up, in order to keep my mask underwater so I don't lose track of whatever landmark or sea life I'm investigating.

Just a fyi and I know it sounds crazy but if you happen to fall in water or just get wet and there is snow around you just roll around in the snow and it will absorb the moisture and help you dry out faster, by having dry skin will help prevent rapid heat loss. You will still be cold but it is better than being wet.

Regarding the ice dive: There are special "opencell" wetsuits for freedivers (Elios Yamamoto 45 for instance), which are tricky to get into (must be either dressed on in water or on land with the help of a lubricant) but they will basically suck onto your skin and create a seal so that no water will come in. A good (tailor-made) 8mm wetsuit is like a second skin can easily protect you up to 2 hours in ice water.

I've swum in a wetsuit in Halifax Harbour NS in DECEMBER. Not as a diver, just with divers. My husband explained that the water in the suit would stay at body temperature, after a few uncomfortable moments and I wouldn't be cold. Yes Canadians are also crazy.

The cold is really not that bad guys, you get used to it 😁 I've spent up to 15-20min or so in a 7mm suit at like 2c (35F) temperature. Shivers are a lot worst on the surface when you're waiting to dry up at like -10c (14F) 😂

Hey guys, I'm a free diver from High Springs, Florida. I grew up diving our local caves. Most people think it's crazy or stupid but I love it. Free diving under ice though, no thanks.

I am literally freezing just watching this one. Omg how do you hold your breath that long 😳 Very impressive 👏 There is no way I would get in freezing cold water on purpose! On another note how in the world did he keep himself upside down. When I'm in the pool I can't even go to the bottom of the deep end. As soon as I get down I can barely touch the bottom before I float back to the surface 🤷‍♀️
