I really like those sidekick buttons. I've had controllers with backbuttons that I didn't like, nor use...but this has the sidekick buttons i think i could use and the back buttons look comfortable.

You coulda used the dpad in Mario as well, it doesn't require analog movement or anything. It plays well with an arcade controller even. I like the sticks being symmetrical, but it's hard to tell if the ergonomics are good. Looking at a Wii U GamePad, they've got the face buttons up closer to the right stick and they're not horizontally aligned, the face buttons are a bit left of the stick. Same deal with the dpad but mirrored, it's right a bit. I think having them closer together so it's closer to where your thumb fully extends is probably the way to go, and having them offset a bit horizontally lets you do more of a natural arcing motion to go between them instead of going straight down, which might require a regrip to get comfortable. They could apply the same design here, but they'd have to make it a bit wider, I guess. I also like the Steam Deck layout of having everything kind of in a row near the top, but without something like the Deck's trackpads that'd leave them with a bunch of empty space at the bottom.

So my complaint was wanting the dpad on top, I’m a retro centered gamer. I am actually okay with this layout, I do like the dpad to be aligned with the buttons. Then when I’m playing shooters and things with the analog sticks, I’m gonna be using those programmable buttons so my thumbs don’t have to stray far from the sticks. I’m glad someone had a video out about it besides the company themselves, I’m excited to receive my preorder soon.

Yeah I ordered one today - couldn’t pass on that price. Especially since it comes with the case, extra thumb sticks and usb-c. I noticed the company addressed the issues with an update and on their KZbin channel. They show you how to change some settings & install that update (Home button light, vibration settings, etc). I’ve only played my lite handheld - now I can enjoy that Oled screen now with my Clear Green Nitro Deck. 💚

No offense but you're kinda using the new one wrong. You never need to take your right thumb off the right stick. You can use all 4 back paddles as A B X Y. I know it takes time to get used to but it ends up being better

Thanks for the great review. I am glad you are not annoyed at the redesign because to me people's reactions didn't make sense. I saw the original, really wanted it, but decided that the stick placement was a deal breaker. Surely people who bought the original were happy with the layout? Otherwise they were forced to buy it. Buying it of your own free will, then complaining that you feel cheated because this is the version you really wanted just seemed like a super odd take to me.

People that complained about the placement feel the need to bend their thumb to put the tip of it on the right stick, making it awkward, personally I’m fine with it I rotate the stick with the middle of my thumb, and it’s not uncomfortable at all, tip goes on the buttons while I rotate towards the middle.

I’ve got mine. The sticks and back buttons are great and it’s fantastic for Zelda and shooters for example but it’s awful for a classic game like mega man as the d pad and face buttons position is god awful. So yet again it’s another third party controller that isn’t good at doing everything. 🤦🏼😣 I’ve never had to buy and try so many controllers for a system in my life. Just shows how bad the joy cons are that we keep buying this stuff to rectify the problem. I can go back to every system Nintendo has ever made and have no issues but the switch and the joycons are a joke. I would like to say that it’s great that you can easily re map the buttons in the app it’s really quick and easy so it’s got that going for it. I had to do that for mega man because the face buttons are so in unusable.

That’s also how I felt but since I have been playing hollow night, I got used to using the thumb stick instead of the deep pad. It’s actually quite nice. It probably depends on the game you’re playing for example when I used to play MegaMan battle network on the game when I was small, I use the deep pad obviously because that’s all they had but now that I can use my analog stick that’s what I use now.
