Our tan ren gata would be the naihanchi kata, but also fuujyugata kata also, But we also drill sanchin dachi and drill a lot of the tension and breathing like this kata, and we get struck by our sensei too to check for “tightness” but I love how the explanations are for valid reasons for the postures and stances, it reminds me of Honbu dojo in Okinawa, Also, I love the bunkai for the kata is done here. It’s with bunkai and seeing other styles ideas and concepts is really where I think karate shines, we have in our syllabus is wrist holds, grabs ect, that last demonstration would be another one to use, and I haven’t seen anyone do that exactly like that before. Always something new with bunkai and another use 🙌

That concept of tanren-gata is called heishu-gata (slow and tensed) contrary to kaishu-gata (fast and so-called combat) . Goju-ryu uses three heishu-gata: sanchin (as kihon), sanchin dai ni (with turns, traditional version as Go) and tensho (made from rokkishu to kata and as Ju). Seisan also is one of kaishu-gata of Goju-ryu (in fact, of all styles derived from crane kung-fu, even they are more of arhat like Shorin etc). It used to be a demonstration kata (or otherwise fukyu-gata although there is a beginners kata of such name) between sanseru (which is a basic kaishu-gata) and suparimpei (which is an advanced kaishu-gata). All these mentioned kata are derived from crane kungfu (Fujian Baihe-quan) and when I see this sensei training you seisan-gata it feels like it's Goju-ryu, not Shorinji-ryu (except he calls seisan-dachi, not sanchin-dachi but the name is from kata too and all tension and slapping are the same). :)

Tanren kata is energetic kata, not only foundational. It's important for the structure, not for the basic tecnique. When I praticed Shotokan I had Hangetsu and Tekki Shodan, I pratice zhang zhuan (ritsu zen) in Yiquan now with the same function. Tokitsu Sensei explained well this difference. Thanks. ;)

I practice isshinryu. Its very difficult to find teachers with this much attention to detail. The original instructors in the US didn't spend enough time learning these fundamentals before opening dojos over here. Shorinryu and Gojuryu are the foundations of Isshinryu, so I learn much more about bunkai watching them.

From things I’ve read it seems like Shotokan has a lot of fundamental katas. There’s Taikyoku Shodan, Heian Shodan (maybe even all of the Heian kata taken together), and, as you said, Tekki Shodan. However, having said that, in the Shotokan school I practiced in, it seemed like there was no obvious connection between the movements in the katas and the movements in the kihon and kumite we did. (I only ever made it to 3rd kyu.) It felt like kihon and kumite were one thing/one set of movements and kata was another thing/its own separate set of movements. I never saw a single morote uke in kumite, for example.

He definitely has a good balls kick defense, I definitely don't like the idea of getting surrounded by a bunch of guys in a circle though. The knifehand blocks look strong anyway, but we tend to focus a little more on grabbing the floor with our toes and sending our energy into the ground, and trying not to get pushed over, at the dojo I learned at in Palmdale, the sensei there who learned from Hidetaka Nishiyama has only broken the floor one time though. It makes me more confident against not getting picked up with like the beginning of han sian dan and the feet together, or with kicking in general. It's definitely a good idea to pace yourself with some kinds of exercises though. Or at least more cat like otherwise than other people that might take the same class. Or even Hidetaka Nishiyama could step softer in some of the old videos sometimes. And breathing with ki aye sometimes. Like Musashi talks about with the three or four shouts, before, during, and after the battle is won or something like that. Or maybe one of the nine signs of the ninja with shouting. Or maybe more of an after the battle is won than during the fight shout sometimes.

Wadokai has both Naihanchi ( 内畔戦 ) and Seishan ( 征射雲 ) , which I suppose are fundamentals, and thus 鍛錬型. However our Kushanku ( 公相君 ) contains almost entirely techniques found in the Wadokai versions of the 平安 set. I think Wadokai teaches the fundamental AFTER the 真剣型, which would be the 平安 set and 公相君. Similarly to Shotokan and Wadokai, Texas Taekwondo teaches eight basic forms, the Pal Gae ( 팔괘 ) ( 八卦 ) set and two much more advacned forms, Koryo Il Jang and Koro Yi Jang or Koryo One ( 고려 1장, the original; 考慮 一) and Koryo Two (고려 2장 , the successor; 考慮 二). (This is very similar to 観空大 and 観空小). I don't think these are 鍛錬型. Our first black belt form is Keumkang (금강, 金剛). It has very little possibility of being directly translated into application. It does though teach standing for a prolonged period on one foot while blocking, blocking opposite directions simultaneously, and from a kiba dachi you must jump laterally one meter, spinning 360 degrees and punch across our chest like Naihanchi as you land IN KIBA DACHI... twice... for each side. This has to be Taekwondo's 鍛錬型.

Something I would like to know more about when it comes to the breathing in this kata is why is it an audible breath. When exhaling it almost seems like the throat is restricted to slow the flow of the air versus opening the throat and expelling all of your air quickly. Secondly I have heard some people perform this and when they completely exhale all of their air they make a clicking sound at the end. I was told this is the diaphram closing together but the sound once again seems generated from the throat not the diaphram. Do you have any knowledge on this you can share?

In Goju-Ryu Okinawan Karate style, Sanchin kata and Tensho kata are done with this heavy breathing in order to create "dynamic tension", where the body is at the same time mildly tensed, but yet relaxed. It allows for extreme concentration of the technique and proper breath control - inhaling inbetween strike movements and exhaling on the strike. When proficiency is reached using "dynamic tension", the result is improved speed and power delivery aided by proper breathing technique. Also, not running out of breath during sparring.

In Okinawa Seidokan we do not have a Tanren Gata in our official syllabus. However, some of us learned Sanchin Kata of Goju Ryu around 3rd Degree Black Belt. This is because Shian Toma learned this kata as his second kata, but later as a teacher, he was fearful the foreign students would not understand his limited English skills. Often times a practitioner will over pressurize the respiratory system instead of just the muscular system. There were reported deaths of brain aneurysms from this mistake in practice, so Toma Shian omitted the teaching of Sanchin until far later in a student's progression, and even then, he personally selected those he wanted to learn this kata. We do have Seisan as our first kata in our Shorin Ryu system, but it is not practiced as a Tanren fashion. We utilize the natural breathing method for this kata and all others.
