Fantastic video. And great closing comments too. - Of course we should vary our training, learn, experiment and improve. Imagine if all other human endeavours did not do this. We would still have dial-up internet "because that's what our predecessors gave us, and it must remain exactly the same." And then I wouldn't have been able to watch your video.

The modem analogy is perfect! Karate is a living thing - not a butterfly to be killed, preserved and stuck to cardboard. It is at its best when there is active collaboration and growth, and allowed to suit all body types. The karate fundamentalists generally haven't read any of the autobiographies of the founders, who warned of the splitting and reduction of karate into "my way is the only way". So glad we live in an age and generation where we can connect across oceans and openly share our knowledge. Always look forward to your comments 🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️

When it comes to "open mind" on the oyo and kata. The biggest problem people have is the incoming attack should conform to the kata, not the kata conform to the attack. Kata is a outline or guideline. A good analogy is learning to catch a baseball. There is a "kata" for body position ,glove position, and hand position to teach the most basic fundamentals of catching the ball. The fundamentals you learn are then adapted to field a low, ground, ball, high fly ball, or a line drive. All require modifying the positions you used playing catch in order to field the ball, but all use the principles you were taught when first learning to play catch.

Absolutely, what a great analogy! Someone said that kata is a fault-tolerant training method, and they would never have lasted so long across so many years and countries if they were rigid and unyielding to the user. By treating kata as living and dynamic, we allow them to do what they do best: teach us fundamental concepts. We are big believers in conservation of katas, not preservation. It's the difference between providing the right garden for the butterflies to thrive, vs pinning them to cardboard: beautiful, but dead.

Thank you so much, Tom! We believe that bunkai must be, at its heart, practical. But it also helps to show the 'impractical' movements as a starting point, and to encourage students to look below the surface bunkai to that which was hidden underneath for serious students. Not impossible to find, but the real bunkai demands true study and application.

Excellent lesson, Sensei Che! You, and Sensei Zoe, really demonstrate just how effective and dangerous Goju Ryu karate actually is. Clearly, it was designed fir the streets. Anytime people come with the nonsense that traditional Goju Ryu karate is not effective for self defense, hopefully, they will be referred to your channel! Thank you and Sensei Zoe for sharing your knowledge!

Ah, so kind, so kind! The system wouldn't have survived this long if it was useless. In the marketplace of ideas, bad ideas generally die out (though this doesn't explain the persistent survival of certain other styles, cough cough). I think in part karate has been neutered by the advent of sports karate, which is nice and safe and pretty to look at, as well as the fear many instructors have of teaching the real deal, as well as there being so many amateurs who don't know their karate history. But we teach what is age and belt appropriate, and because we constantly refer to the source, we work on what is truly authentic and not on what sells. At least, that's what we aim for :)

This is the best video you have created so far! Production quality is excellent. Che Sensei was at his most engaging and informative. I took many notes on where throws could be used within the kata without destroying its form, which was fun for me. Che Sensei point on what Kata can be I really agree with. I have had many discussions with others that Kata is a recommended format but your brain has to be engaged to understand the fluidity of a fight. Its interesting how many do not agree. Besides any video with Queen and Brian being able to handle Deshi abuse is always great.

Ah, so glad that this long-ass video resonated with you, William! Your avatar is one of the ones we look most forward to seeing in our comment notifications 🙇🏻‍♀️ In my conversations with Sensei Terry and Sensei Mike over email, it seems that so much of the essence of karate was lost when it was imported overseas. Luckily in SA, we have had Okinawans (all the big names) come and visit here regularly since the 70s, which has helped us maintain much Okinawan flavour and understanding. As a millenial, my personal approach to kata is that it should be treated as a living thing, best cared for in collaboration with like-minded students. It's the difference between stuffing the tiger and conserving the tiger in the right environment. Without bunkai, kata becomes meaningless, and you're right - most people don't get that. Thank you for the kind words! We have finally found the right spot in the dojo to film in for the most light and cleanest background. As long as we can keep learning with each video, we can only get better 🙇🏻‍♀️

Hopefully it will be more of an evergreen video that will do well over time! There's not a lot of competition on the topic. It is our longest video, we're running a bit of an experiment to see what the ideal length is for a video. People watched 45 minutes of the history of Goju Ryu, so we thought we'd leave this at 33 minutes. (It was originally 38 minutes)
