Here are 4 things you have missed at St Joseph oratory . The ' chemin de croix' garden with it's statue and fontain luminated at night, the golden altar hidden just behind the main alter , the grotto with the virgin Mary where you can see the rocky cliff on which sits the oratory and finally the alley which leads to Westmount just behind St Joseph .

The special thing about cote des neiges i've found is its residents diversity. You can find also along the chemin cote des neiges multitude of restaurants : chinese, viatnamese, korean, japanese, arab, turk, west african, russian, french, kosher, indian, along with fast food options. You stopped at the very beginning of the main street. There is also many places of worship : churches, mosques and maybe a boudhist temple. HEC and Udem are located near the neighborhood wich adds the students vibe the that mix.

The video looks great, man. I love being out during that time of the evening so I appreciate the atmosphere this video captures. Not all videos need to be filmed midday. And thanks for exploring a neighborhood that doesn’t get as much attention. Keep it up!

That market your showed in our neighbourhood is seasonal and opened 24 hours a day, much like the Metro grocery store and the Pharmaprix drug store. In that small area you visited on Côte-des-neiges there are three top bakeries, Le Duc de Lorraine, Le Pain Doré, Première Moisson. It's a wonderful neighbourhood.

There's actually a footpath along the road where the shuttle took you - if you'd switched to "car" directions on Google Maps, it'd have taken you right to it. So a little bit easier to navigate for those driving in. Another thing you may want to explore - walking in the neighborhood behind the church, you'll see some of the nicest houses in Montreal. St Andre who founded the Oratory is also a fascinating figure, credited with many miracle healings - he was so popular in the region, they had special train services scheduled from the US for people to pay their final respects at his funeral, with a million visitors attending in total,

Here's a somewhat known secret , of the Oratory , many of the faithful , including my dear departed mother , believed that if you hid a little donation in the grassy slope of the place , it would answer your prayers when you wanted to sell your home , it was a prayer for the new owners , your new home and a quick resolution of the sale . A metal detector would be like a nonstop treasure hunt , lol ..................P.S when ever you answer the phone to someone you don't know , you answer it like this , ( St Joseph Oratory , mental health ward , can I help you .....LOL

It wasn't that bad Dan! Some interesting stuff. Your comment about Montreal having been such a Catholic city is interesting. Quebec society used to be completely church-dominated until the 1960s. Then the province went through the Quiet Revolution - where Quebecois threw off many practices and traditions they felt had stifled their freedom of expression, association etc. Today, Quebec has the lowest rate of church attendance of any province in Canada. Only about 5% of people go to a religious service regularly.

I made a similar mistake when I visited here the first time. I took left from the Oratory and roamed around for an hour to spot the entrance. I should have taken the right to the parking lot to catch the shuttle bus.
