The Empire had something BETTER than X-Wing patrols, the Skipray Blastboat. The fact they didn't use it more in spite of many Imperial officers loving it says everything.
@orokusaki1243Ай бұрын
The Skipray isn't a fighter, it is larger and less maneuverable, and is also a single ship designed for system patrol (AKA around the main planet's assets and it's hyperspace jump points). The Imperial officers liked to go with the bigger is better (more imposing, more fear, less resistance) mentality, which wasn't always the truth of the matter. The hyperdrive was for micro-jumps within a system, and perhaps escort/transport to other nearby systems. A pair of hyperdrive fighters can achieve quite a bit as a patrol - keyword: patrol. They are scouting for (and being the first responders to) trouble that may be occurring within the space of an established perimeter. They triage the situation, attempt to resolve the situation, and call for any additional support that fits the task, if necessary. The protocol is report in, and retreat if overwhelmed, something not as easily done for a single ship if it is disabled/destroyed. A wing pair has better odds of reporting in, one buys time for the other.
@lordMartiyaАй бұрын
@orokusaki1243 And yet, the Skipray worked well even on long range patrols.

The plot-firepower on the X-Wing is pretty outstanding. Not to mention the plot-armor. Better than a squadron of TIE fighters. Though, the B-Wing's budget stealth is pretty hard to beat too. You almost never see it, just the wrecked ships on the battlefields.

The plot shields are far more questionable, however, this is made up for with the plot astromechs which can reroute up to and including a missing engine.

@@lancepharker I was just going to mention that. Plot shields seem to vary from stopping laser blasts completely to doing absolutely nothing! @@matthemming9105 It's a tough thing to balance for art. Art has to be inspiring, but realistic enough it doesn't seem alien. @matthemming9105Ай бұрын
@stormycatmink pretty sure we knew about gravity in the 70s. My point is that nit-picking on details as "plot armour" frames a standard narrative choice as a failure of the creator that the superior critic has identified. Remember: in Star Wars, laser swords can cut through anything EXCEPT other laser swords. It's as much fantasy as it is sci-fi, and it's about the farthest thing from "hard" sci-fi. If that's what you want, there are other movies and shows that also want that, and thus try to deliver it, like The Expanse. But the Expanse doesn't also have space wizards who can lift rocks with their minds.

5:42 it makes a lot more sense, from a cost perspective, to have hyperspace-enabled starfighters (or small gunships) to run patrols and response, then even a Gozanti-class cruiser. Because hyperspace travel is so rapid that if the threat is greater than two X-Wings can handle, a quick response could be scrambled from centrally-located sector fleets.

The ship seemed quite functional (despite landing on it's top), just dormant. Seemed a mutiny occurred. The droid doesn't seem to recall the planet's name - so that ship could've been there for quite some time... ...perhaps there's some history between the current populace and pirates, before the barrier, maybe before the world took it's current name. The ship was buried, and not far from a population center - the admins certainly were aware of it's presence.
@artdent9871Ай бұрын
Dunno, that much top soil built up on the ship points to centuries in a temperate woodland environment like the kid's hometown, be different in a tropical rainforest, but High Republic origins for the banking culture on the surface should predate that, you'd think. @orokusaki1243Ай бұрын
Yup, the ship was probably intentionally buried, and being a restricted area patrolled by droids, it was not supposed to be found. It is also a "brand new" model, no previous incarnations in known lore, so that adds to the mystery of who made it,, when, for what, and it's capabilities. Definitely getting that "don't trust the droids" vibe. They too don't look like any other droids in known lore Allegedly the pirate asteroid is in M-6 on the galactic map, in the Outer Rim. The travel time was about 4-6 hours from At Attin. Would be nice if they do eventually identify where these places are, officially.
@artdent9871Ай бұрын
That "exploring" the unknown (to us) parts of outer rim element is almost Trek-like;) Disney has been doing that lately. Tie fighters not having hyperdrives isn't a real problem at all. A carrier provides a lot of advantages such as fire, logistical and tactical support that lets the pilots rest when not in combat which means they have better reaction times in battle. The X-wings hyperdrive is great for hit and run but even X-wings need a carrier for longer term missions, it lacks facilities and advanced sensors which makes it a lousy scout for anything longer than a short range fly-by. The X-wing s true strength is as a multi role strike fighter which was essential for the rebels because of their lack of firepower but that isn't that important for the imperial navy. There is a myth that is really popular that the Rebels were a major thorn in the Empires side with a lot of support and they were slowly bleeding it to death which is completely wrong. The Rebels were almost always on the losing end of any engagement, they were always a hair breath away from being completely eradicated, the battle of Endor was a hail Mary, they committed everything that they had and if they had lost the Rebellion for all intents and purposes would have been finished. Another myth is that if the Empire only had different ships or a different doctrine they could have won but this is ridiculous, the Empire was on the verge of winning, the reason they lost was because of arrogance. If Palpatine hadn't died or if he had set up a successor the Rebels had near zero chance of surviving let alone winning. Once you understand this fact it makes the story so much better because the stakes are so high.

TBF, the X-Wing isn't 100% prototype. Incom also made the Z-95 Headhunter, and while its base form is atmosphere-only, it's clear where the design team drew inspiration for the X-Wing. There's also the fact that the controls and cockpit are largely kept the same for Incom ships, which is how Luke was able to transfer his skills from the T-16 Skyhopper to flying the X-Wing.
@CurtisWT18 күн бұрын
In Legends Incom produces the X-Wing as the successor to the Z-95 Headhunter. Planetary & Sector police forces used them for law enforcement and freight companies used them for convoy escorts. The Y-Wing was produced by Koensayr Manufacturing starting during the clone wars and were used similarly to the X-Wing following the galactic civil war. The A-Wing was created as the next generation of the Jedi's Delta-7 from the Clone Wars, when the empire went with the Tie-Fighter the prototypes were sold off and eventually ended up in the hands of the Rebel Alliance and more were made in private workshops. The B-Wings were the brainchild of Admiral Ackbar and built in the Mon Calamari shipyards.

The "Patrol" mission versus the "Transport" mission. The Patrol can call in a Transport if needed. Depending on the intel, the Transport might arrive with the Patrol. Why risk a Transport, or fly it without explicit purpose? The wing-pair can assess the situation on-site, and call for any specific support vessels as needed. Gotta think of it being similar to motorcycle cops. Most of the time, they're targeting infractions that don't require arrest, and when they do, they call in a transport.

@@GenerationTech I still think that is a bit silly when actual tugs exist. Looking at the YT series, they're all freighters and transports. Some dude in Legends made the case that the "mandibles" of the YT-1300 were for docking with containers so as to move those containers, and somehow it stuck. A case of having to explain everything - with varying quality - in this case a bit out of step, awkward and impractical. The containers would have to be specifically designed to fit that ~3-4 meter space, and it would prevent the use of the larger freight loading/unloading doors. Meanwhile, in Solo, we see that Lando has an escape craft in that spot, also blocking those freight doors. The "mandibles" aren't seen to open and close, but granted - if they can hold a craft, they could probably hold something else that specifically fits that space.

The X-wing Patrols are probably more cost efficient, but the Imperial Patrols are more cost effective. If you see a Gozanti and its 4 TIE's, the required force to engage, damage or defeat that force is quite out of reach for most. This is compared to the 2 X-wings, to which only requires at least 3 Starfighters to be able to engage, damage or defeat, to which is very within reach for most. The cost to engage, damage or defeat for an Imperial Patrol could easily be worth more than 400,000 credits, while the X-wing Patrol could be something as lows as 200,000. You must also place in perspective capability disparity, the Imperial Patrol can Fight, detain ships (Tractor Beam), detain personnel (Mothership), deploy personnel (Complement), disperse operations (more hulls), while the X-wing patrol can only Fight.

Good assessment. Though if strictly a "patrol", it would depend on the nature and scope of that patrol. A single installation, a single system, a portion of a sector, it further depends upon what kind of incursions are being patrolled for, and there may be additional factors to determine the correct vehicles to be made available. Thus a task force may be more appropriate, with patrols searching out any incursions for the task force to respond to.

Skelton Crew is very good. I'm just sad that in 2025, we are only getting Andor and Visions. Nothing else until Mando and Grogu movie in 2026.

The T-47 speeder should have been made a space going fighter. At least it has room to hold an arrested perpetrator. It really the x-wing is quite big and it has that hatch at the rear.. I’m starting to think it may have paddy wagon capabilities to make an arrest!

It’s better 99%of the time than a star destroyer but that 1% of the time is firepower

1:12 they wouldn’t do anything because the primary magical predator in the Imperial era were the inquisitors ain’t no way they gonna dispatch on their own special operations
@theconfidentchicken3414Ай бұрын
fun fact, the actor that plays Carson Teva, is around 52 years old, and the average life span for a human is around 80 years old, aka in 30 years so around the time Carson Teva would've retired or passed away, the sequels begin, so I fully believe Carson Teva was the only reason the New Republic lasted as long as it did, and it immediately feel apart once he was out of the picture furthermore, if he did retire instead of die, I fully imagine 80 something year old Carson Teva showed up to the final battle in Rise of Skywalker, and his presence alone was enough to fix the New Republic, from total ruin

@GenerationTech I know it’s blasphemy to talk about the sequels, but because I like the design of the T-70, did that fix the irregularity problems and how would that fair against the Tie Dagger?

That's just the shape it makes in our roman alphabet (aka high galactic alphabet), but looks nothing like the aurebesh letter "x". It is a "multi-role" star fighter, but there are certainly others.

The key thing to remember is the strategies both side were fighting. The rebels could never win a stand up fight 1on1 they lacked numbers and firepower so they could not stay and conquer a planet. They needed to always be on move running away from the empire. Va empire they already owned everything and so only needed to hold the planets and let the rebels come to them. Obviously you’re not going to leave a bunch of fighters floating in space for days. It makes sense to have a carrier and lots of fighters and just sit them in a star system ready to react to a rebel attack.

We probably could build T-fighters in real life. The window of a T-fighter is similar to the big window on the ISS-International Space Station. The side panels are maybe solar panels And we have ion engines That design might be good for an in orbit, short travel space craft
