It’s so cool how karate is normally thought of as a long distance hit and run style, but when you break down the kata, there’s so much effective wrestling-range material to work with. Also it’s cool to see Yusuke embrace the 80s-90s martial arts movie craze. I’m guessing it started with Cobra Kai, but that rabbit hole runs deep.

I do shito ryu (also goju ryu) we called it same, pinan nidan, i know in some dojos they still call it pinan shodan.

Yeah in mine we call them Pinan shodan, Nidan, sandan, etc

Very impressive technique very amazing indeed your bunkai is very very helpful because it's realized situations in very very effective industry fight as long as you're doing the right way you might survive even if someone points a gun your face does the big challenge right there You always got to be aware and you always have to be ready for any situation 🥋🙏😌🙏🥋

Does katas have any set applications of any technique at all or does the applications vary from student to student all of the time?

For this technique I would rather hold the leg and kick like they do in Muay. At least, it would make sense of the exaggerated scoop motion some people do at first uchi uke.

I love kata but honestly, bunkai is pretty much useless in a real fight (except for a couple of moves that can be used for self defense). This is why in Japanese karate kata and kumite are taught separately. But I still love kata though 😊

The modern split between kumite and kata was not intended to happen first of all. From a martial art aspect, it's a negative outcome of competition karate's evolvement even in the birthplace of karate.

Applications for civilian self- defence (which are found through out the traditional kata ) are absolutely relevant and effective for real fights. Understanding the original role of kata is essential if you wish to interpret the bunkai. Kata is designed as a physical mnemonic. Essentially a guided lesson plan for teacher lead learning which describes a set of combat principles and tactics with example applications to demonstrate those principles.

Kata is based on 2 person drills that work grappling, locking, throwing, and striking techniques. Unfortunately much of the knowledge embedded in kata has been lost between karate’s export to Japan, the impact of the Dempsey/Capentier fight emphasizing striking, and Japanese/Okinawan understandable reluctance to share true technique with Western practitioners post WW2.

That's because the kata were changed when they came to Japan. A lot of the practical stuff was left out.
