It depends on your definition of "rainbow."
@besmart8 жыл бұрын
+Physics Videos by Eugene Khutoryansky I'd say, by definition, "RAINbows" are caused by droplets of liquid water, and none of these are caused by liquid water. Easy test: Do you see a cool colored thing in the sky? Is the sun in front of you? If you answered yes to both of these questions, it's not a rainbow!

maybe they should be called 'ice bows' on the general case. they are really cool, but my favorite atmospheric thing is how sometimes the clouds conspire with the sun to paint the world golden a few hours before sunset.
@jongeduard8 жыл бұрын
Nice video. But the thing at 0:25 is definitely not a halo fenomenon, no ice crystals are involved. It's called *cloud iridescence*, strongly related to the *corona* optical phenomenon. It's an effect coused by the diffraction of light by very small (supercooled) cloud droplets, not ice crystals.

I used to go skydiving a few times a year and one daive i was under canopy and i coasted thru a small cloud. when i was right above the cloud the sun was right behind me and there was a small circle "rainbow" directly in my path. i learned later that this is called a glory and i think it happens when the sunlight is directly behind you and your shadow is cast into fog/clouds. it can happen if your up on a cliff or a bridge

When I first heard Ronny James Dio sing about "A Rainbow in the Dark" I thought it was an absurd impossibility that he was using a metaphor... Then one day in the middle of January, at 2AM, I looked up at the sky, and there was indeed, a Rainbow in the Dark... Completely encircling the full moon. And I've never listened to that song the same again.

Longer wavelengths are bend slightly more, not slightly less (2:29), that is why Red is on the outside of a rainbow. But with a sun dog the opposite happens, its on the inside as the sun is inside that arrangement, thus the opposite

When I was a teen, (I'm 65), conditions were really great for halos around the sun one day. Dad saw three sets, and I saw seven concentric sets that were weaker the farther they got from the sun. Those farthest ones were really hard to see. I'm curious. Has anyone else ever seen the end of a rainbow that moves beside you in a field as you drive? I saw this in the '70s, when I rode home with a friend from college. Sorry, no pot of gold to be seen.
@NiffirgkcaJ2 жыл бұрын
When I was in high school, I was standing in a field with my back facing the sun, I was just looking at the sky minding my own business when it drizzled suddenly, thanks to that though, I was able to realize that rainbows aren't really rain'bows', rather they're really rain'rings'.

Last school year, my class was outside and I noticed a rainbow around the sun! It was cool, so I told my friends. They looked at the sun to see but could only do so for a second or two before their eyes started to hurt and they looked away. They said they couldn't see it, and then I remembered: I have transition lenses in my glasses.

+rdizzy1 you have a point but with such high temp on the ground even a mile high wouldn't be freezing cold right.
@rdizzy18 жыл бұрын
Muhammad Mirsab Nope, every and any location on earth has ice crystals floating above if you go high enough. The temperature in the atmosphere on average goes down by 6.4 degrees C per KM you go up. The lowest part of the atmosphere ends at 16km up. Even half of that (8km) would be a drop of roughly 50C.
