Seventeen Seconds is my go-to listen walking to the station in the morning in the dark during winter. A Donovan record is a rarity in the wild I find. I'm not familiar with 'Friends' but that is a lovely looking copy. Nice finds Rob, cheers Dale

Really enjoying Seventeen Seconds, I think the early Cure records had a lot of space in them and created a lot of atmosphere. Yes, Donovan 60s albums are annoyingly difficult to find, particularly that 1965- 68 period. Thanks Dale.

Hello Rob. Fabulous copies of those Beach Boys LPs. I do have Friends in a slightly battered copy. You’ve made me want to play it again. Holland is one of my favourite Beach Boys albums, as is Sunflower. Anne Briggs had a marvellous unaffected voice, great to see The Time Has Come in a nice reissue. I only have it on CD.

I've been trying to complete the Bob Marley collection for so many years now, but I find them with ever dwindling regularity. 'Buffalo Soldier' is one of my favourite Marley tunes but alas haven't found Confrontation yet. The Cure I blow hot and cold with - enjoy their singles but Robert Smith's voice (and by extension his demeanour) starts to grate after a while. I really like Donovan but I often pass him by while out digging - I probably view him as something of a slippery slope. Mellow Yellow is definitely one I would pick up if I saw it though. Wow, 'Friends' on vinyl, not something you see every day. I saw a couple of copies of Pet Sounds at a record fair in Wales at the weekend. Great finds Rob.

I actually really like Robert Smith..he's unapologetically himself and displays a vulnerability sometimes in interviews ( at least those that I've seen) that is refreshing for a rock star of that era. I guess for me, The Cure were a band I largely ignored in the 80s, so it's fun to now be discovering the albums and deep cuts. Some of the 'goth' bands from that era were awful and so overblown like The Mission..at least The Cure are a bit more restrained and create space and atmosphere in their best work ..I think Seventeen Seconds is fabulous. Yes, delighted to find Friends and such a mint copy, it's a lovely record, really uplifting and sunny..its' a pity many post Pet Sounds Beach Boys albums get overlooked. I'm on a mission to get as many Bob Marley originals as I can, but as you say, they are tough to pick up especially in great nick.

I am not a huge Donavan fan but I do like the Mellow Yellow album and I actually have it. Liked seeing the Replacements. Funny thing is that is the one album I don’t have as they got too soft for me lol. It makes total sense that you do find the beauty of that album. The songwriting of Westerberg was much improved. Great group of records.

Thanks Steve I like both ends of The Replacements career, as you say Paul Westerberg really upped his game in terms of the songwriting. I still like the early raw stuff. Nice that you got to see them live, I bet it was a riot.

Hi Rob, I really need to pick up that Anne Briggs album. I only have one of her albums currently - Sing a Song For You, her 3rd. I have most of the early albums but I'm missing most of those latter day Marley albums too - the latest one I have is Kaya. I gave up hoping to find the Donovan albums from that period and instead picked up the reissues that they did a few years back. mellow yellow is a really good album. Love Morris On! Have you got Son Of...? I'm trying to track down all the Beach Boys post Pet Sounds albums (up to and including Holland). I think it's a great underappreciated period for the band. I'm currently missing Smiley Smile and Friends, and I need an upgrade of 20/20. Have a great week... Pete

Hi Pete Totally agree regarding the Beach Boys..their post Pet Sounds discography up to 1973 gets highly underappreciated..sure there are other band members contributing to the songwriting, but it was just as well because Brian Wilson became so burnt out. I haven't got Sing A Song For You, will have to check out. I haven't got ' Son of' but I believe its' also highly regarded.

Hi Rob, good you are still supporting a local shop that's really important too. I know some of those early Cure albums are decent and dark but I've never found them out in the wild. Later the irritating Friday I'm love put me off them. Similar to sit down by James. One song can wreck it. Anne Briggs yeah I've heard she's good. Morris On Morris Off 😅 seen that a fair bit never tried. Right, guess i better go to work now......

Yep, never have any issues supporting Ben at SJ Records, he's put some great records my way over the years as well as given me some great deals and freebies..always offers me first dibs on stuff he knows I'm into and if I don't like it, I can always take it back..perfect.

I also skipped out on RSD - I find more and more it's just too expensive for releases that either aren't that special or will get a cheaper re-release somewhere down the line.

Hi Morten I can see myself getting a lot more of The Cure. I like Robert Smith as a person too, he's really cool and unapologetically himself, brandishing an authenticity that has served the band well for 40+ years. Thanks for watching.

@@robison5396 I’m very happy to still have most of my Cure vinyl records from my youth. Yeah. I faltered so Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me is on cassette and from Disintogration onwards it was all CDs. But I have Boys Don’t Cry, 17 Seconds, Faith, Pornography, Japanese Whispers and Head on the Door all the way back from my teens. What happened to my copy of The Tops, I do not know. Sort of planning to get Disintigration and others on vinyl, but I’ll probably do what you’ve done and get modern pressings of those. I never see OG’s in the wild for humane prices. Robert is great. I saw them live in Drammen, west of Oslo when they toured Disintigration. Beautiful even, lots of purple lights!

Hey Rob! I seriously think Anne Briggs is the finest interpreter of English folk song ever recorded. There's something so pure and unadorned about her voice. Her third album, Sing A Song For You, released in 1997, wasn't her return to music. The album was originally recorded in 1973 with a group Steve Ashley put together called Raged Robin. Briggs was pregnant at the time and wasn't happy how that had effected her voice, so the album went unreleased for nearly 25 years. I love a lot of the post Pet Sounds Beach Boys music, but after that high watermark, I don't think they made another fully formed great album. There are some stupendous tunes dotted around, but I think with Brian sidelined there were too many creative voices pulling in different directions. Cheers - Hedley

@robison5396 6 ай бұрын
Hi Hedley Thanks for putting me right with Anne Briggs. Given her reticence to record, your explanation makes perfect sense..what a pity she didn't pursue her music after 1973. I'm a sucker for great vocal harmonies and The Beach Boys' brand of rock n roll barbershop wins me over every time. Even Smiley Smile with its' odds n ends tracks has a great fascination for me. I think Friends is a lovely album.

Hi Rob. Oh no, I was expecting loads of over-priced RSD records I'm not interested in ... I've not heard Anne Briggs' second album. The presence of Lal Waterson makes this of interest to me ... I like 'All Shook Down'. I think it's effectively a Paul Westerberg solo album ... I picked up my vinyl copy of 'Morris On' for next to nothing in a charity shop. It was one of those shops that over-priced a lot of the vinyl. They must have thought there was no market for a band doing morris dancing! By the way, I've just uploaded a charity finds video which includes Barry Dransfield's 'Wings Of The Sphinx' CD. 'The Recruited Collier' and the mostly acapella 'A Week Before Easter' are real quality ... That 'Friends' vinyl looks immaculate. I rate the Beach Boys' late-60s/early 70s era.

Cheers Carl. The Anne Briggs is wonderful, such a pity she chose to abandon her music career soon after this..( Her 1996 release was apparently unreleased material recorded in 1973). I think later 60s Beach Boys albums are often overlooked because of unfavourable comparison to Pet Sounds, but still have plenty to offer in terms of creativity. Pleased to finally snag All Shook Down. I'll head on over and check out your video!. All the best.

@@robison5396 I vaguely recall Anne Briggs being interviewed for Mojo magazine quite awhile ago. I don't really know much about her career (or lack of). I'll have to do a Google search. @@carltweed942 Yes, there are quite a few UK female folk singers that could potentially take the crown for best vocalist.. Sandy Denny Jacqui McShee Shirley Collins Maddy Prior Anne Briggs June Tabor Annie Haslam ( not strictly speaking folk) Gay Woods Linda Thompson Beverly Martyn That said, for sheer vocal dexterity, Dusty Springfield tops them all.

I think Don't Talk ( Put Your Head On My Shoulder) is probably the most sublime song Brian Wilson ever wrote ..there are weaker songs on that album for sure, but it's still a decent listen. I think it's a good album, but its' a pity some of the later albums like Friends and Sunflower get overlooked in favour of Pet Sounds, because there are great moments there too Ho hum, music is so subjective Chris.
