@mikepetitti3 жыл бұрын
As a long time Bulls fan, and someone who watched almost every game from the mid 1980s through the late 1990s, I find this situation sad. First, there are many good and bad things to say about Phil Jackson as a coach. He was terrific when he first took over the Bulls. He was one of the key ingredients to the first three-peat. Krause plucked Phil out of the CBA and gave him a job as an assistant and when he was promoted to HC, he was great. He was also outstanding in the 1993/1994 season, which IMHO, was his best season. And while Phil was still a terrific coach for the second Bulls three-peat, he had developed an arrogance. And while Jerry Krause could grate on people's nerves, Phil's boorish behavior (as well as Michael's and Scottie's) toward Krause was inexcusable. After that, Phil did great with the Lakers. Of course, his tenure with the Knicks was disasterous. But through all that, I never heard anyone say that Phil was a racist nor did I ever hear any anecdotes to that effect. Of course, I am on the outside, but so many private moments have been exposed in books, documentaries, etc...with no evidence to this effect. As for Scottie, he was a better player than I ever thought he would be. Terrific defender, outstanding passer and all-around great player with a great BBall I.Q. He had an under-appreciated offensive game - good jumper, could hit threes and developed a good low post game later in his career. However, when it came to creating his own shot and hitting clutch shots, that was not his forte. In the 1993/1994 season, Kukoc hit several clutch shots vs. Milwaukee (beginning of the season), Orlando (Xmas game), Pacers (after Reggie bowed), etc.. Kukoc just had that knack. So it made sense to me anytime Phil designed a play for Toni to hit a shot in crunch time. Funny thing is that I always thought Pippen was a player who understood the game so well to the point where if it made sense for someone other than himself to take the last shot, he not only understood and accepted that, but he would facilitate because that was best for the team. As for him sitting out the 1.8 seconds....I recall at the time thinking this will be a permanent mark against him. They had a locker room meeting after that game in which Cartwritght and Paxson spoke up and told Scottie after everything they had been through that year without Michael, he let the team down. Meaningful words from two veteran leaders who played along side Scottie and had champiionship metal. Afterward, an emotional Pippen addressed the team and apologized. The next game - Game 4 - they clobbered the Knicks with Pippen leading the way. At that point, I assumed the issue was past them. Didn't mean that it didn't happen, but they moved past it. If Scottie were gracious, he would have owned that moment over they years anytime it was brought up: "Yeah, I messed up. It was a tough year for me and I felt like I had a lot to prove and I let my emotions get the better of me at that moment. Looking back, I wish I would have handed things differently." If he would have done that through the years, we wouldn't be talking about it today. And that moment had nothing to do with Phil being a racist. If this is all just to sell a book and liquor, what a terrible way to go out for him. At some point, the Bulls will do a reunion of the 1990s teams and how can Pippen show his face at this poiint with the bridges he is buring? Rarely do I listen to Steve A, but he is 100% correct with his take on this situation. Sad to see Pip behave this way.

ye, SAS has some slightly racist views and opinions, but to me he's a bit like that harmless 40 year old white dad who keeps to himself with his stuff, sometimes disagrees with others, but never would act out or actually insult people. just some older generation where it was deeply rooted, but tries to be better than that. scottie rn is stirring up race drama to get personal gain, which is the worst a person can be or do

@@OlJackBurton well in these regard the truth about what happened will never be known. But it is a fact that Pippen refused to play because Phip wanted Kukoc to take the last shot. It is a fact that it took Scotty more than 25 years to make his claim and he never mentioned it before that. He even missed the timing of making these claims in the peak of the BLM movement in time with George Floyd's death. Also it is a fact that he made the claim just before the launch of his own book and it is a claim he is making alone as no one of his black team mates including Rodman, Kobe and Shaq ever brought up such issues.
