@bartrazin

What I see is that Pro Rail has embraced the modern LED light which allows a single blub to very in intensity as well as display more than one colour. The new signal face is narrower, but the reflective edges will assist with seeing it. The simplification of installation and ongoing upkeep will be a factor in moving forward with the changes. Liked your explanation of the new signal and the reasoning behind going forward with it.
@weeardguy
@weeardguy Жыл бұрын
LED lighting is already in use in the Dutch railway industry for 3 decades, railside signals probably about 25 or 20 years (as other colours had yet to advance in light-intensity, where red LEDs were already capable of replacing bulbs in the nineties) But those LED-signals are able to vary their intensity based on the time of day as well, so it's not all that new. Only the fact that a single-aspect signal can display all three colours is new. The reason why I hardly believe this thing will lead to any significant savings in cost is the way I expect it to be constructed: unless the signal's colours are interchangeble (which I doubt) one can swap only a defective colour. But I expect the unit to have a single PCB with all LEDs on them, making it impossible (except for component-level repairs) to repair a single colour. Maybe you wouldn't want to do so, as swapping one defective colour will mean the other two have aged significantly and could lead to great differences in intensity, but still.

@mambonummer5

While the more compact (laterally) form factor undoubtedly makes installation easier, and improvements in reliability are always welcome, I am somewhat unconvinced by this new signal. The main function of a signal's backboard (easily the widest part of the existing signals) is to contrast and disambiguate the signal lamps against background lights that may be of similar colour and brightness (eg. sodium street lamps are yellow, and road traffic signals use the same colours too). It is unclear why a brighter type of LED lamp could not be fitted to the existing head design, in the same way as the current type. There also seems to be no place to display the numeric portion of a Dutch signal aspect, which seems to be required in the vicinity of most junctions. There may be variant signal heads which accommodate these needs, but the small test site shown here, using only a single head type, doesn't seem to be an adequate field test upon which to predicate the deployment of the new signal as a general direct replacement for worn-out signals. On the upside, the lamp design seems to avoid a major pitfall encountered with British LED signal heads. These appear to come in three major families, one of which is a direct analogue for the traditional three or four lamp head, with a single-coloured LED lamp in place of each incandescent lamp. The other two types can show any of the three colours in one aperture, but do so by packing three different sets of LEDs, one for each colour, into the space. One of them has chosen a fairly attractive pattern that spreads the LEDs of any individual colour out evenly. The other has arranged the red and green LEDs in distinct rows and the yellow ones in a grid, so that when showing the most commonly encountered aspects (red or green), it looks at first as though the lamp is malfunctioning - and even when you remind yourself that's not the case, it looks just plain ugly.

The signal does have a numeric LED display in the middle, above the light.
@mambonummer5
@mambonummer5 Жыл бұрын
There is a place reserved for the numeric portion on this signal, but that's not really visible in the video. The number is displayed in the middle, below the sun visor 3/4ths to the top. The contrast is partially mitigated with light sensors on the front an back of the signal, so it can adjust it's light strength individually according to the local light situation; a signal aspect can shine brighter if the sun is shining from the back for instance.

I really don't think the backboard being so narrow is a problem, in switzerland the backboards on our type-L signals are half a meter wide, which seems very similar to these new generation signals, and I've never heard any train drivers complain about the signals being too small to read here.

As a driver I'm not a fan. They are more difficult to spot from far away during the day since you miss the black background. Most drivers don't like changes, especially not when there isn't a real issue to begin with :)
@puikepuck
@puikepuck Жыл бұрын
@@roxannehoff2889 the issue, besides of course that these are cheaper to make (but not that much cheaper to make that the main reason), is that the old signals are too wide to place in sight on a multi-track (3 or more) stretch, because they were too wide to hang them low enough to be at eye sight and not be hit by trains. These narrower signals can be placed lower and still off-profile, which should make them easier to spot. Since more and more stretches in NL are widened from 2 to 4 tracks, this will more and more become an issue.
@puikepuck
@puikepuck Жыл бұрын
@@roxannehoff2889 the idea is that the signals will be better visible because they'll be on eye height. With "lower" I mean the light will be at the same hight the old signals were when they were on a standalone pole rather than a portal with multiple signals. Those portals are now placed quite high, because the old signals are too big to fit outside profile when hanging above the tracks rather than standing next to them. For clarification: the signals that are on their own standalone pole will not change in height. I'm not a train driver, so you probably know better than me, but as far as I know, not a particular lot of railway tracks have streetlights, so I don't think drivers mistaking yellow signals for streetlights will be a regular occurance. But correct me if I'm wrong. Either way, as I said, only the signals on portals will be placed lower, at around the same height as those on their own standalone poles. If you never mistook those for streetlights, probably you won't mistake the new signals for streetlights either. Especially not because streetlights usually don't have a reflecting white border around them, which these new signals do. And if you miss a yellow light after all, surely ATB will remind you of it.

Half a million euros? Less than half oh the quarter bonuses of managers... In years! It will be much more efficient to fire 50% of the "top" managers!

The signals look fine to me from the UK (WHERE WE ARE ALSO REPLACING OUR CLASSIC COLOUR LIGHT SIGNALS) However would not the ETCS make more sense for such a densely worked railway? On a more general note - why are Dutch Regional and IC trains so slow? Despite, on the face of it anyway, extremely favourable topography 140kph seems the max and 120 the normal. Even these modest speeds are seldom reached or maintained! Or is there a LOT of recovery time built in? I know NS is just one big metro but journeys such can be quite long!

That is why over the years all of the signals came to have distinctive patterns where it is irrelevant what color you see or if you can distinguish red from yellow. Light position on the signal gives you 99.5% of the information you need. Here we see a clear attempt of the mass murder by corporate types to save 10% of their annual bonuses over 10 years...

Seems to me the new signal is indeed visible from somewhat further away. Having the different aspects occupy a single light may be an advantage (allows the light to be placed for optimal visibility) or a disadvantage (missing out on an extra positional clue, especially when the aspect changes). I don't know, doesn't seem to be an enormous step forward. Do these new signals have something to do with the introduction of ETCS?

@marcoNLD "cheaper to make and maintain" There will be order of magnitude greater savings from firing one of the "top managers" with no risk of casualties. And about no savings form the "new" signals as RGB LED cost is about the same as a cost of Red, Yellow and Green LEDs. But you will need more expensive and prone to failure LED driver... Not counting that decoding light position takes 10-100 times less time for the brain than decoding the light color.

@@iobuov With the main difference that in the current setup, every aspect has its own driver circuit: the PCB's are drop-in replacements with all components on them to directly swap with a bulb. But even with 1 aspect that can display three colours, I expect every colour to have its own dedicated power supply, with the reason simply being limiting the chance of failure: if you have just 1 power supply for all three colours, one failing power supply will turn the whole signal into a dead (unlighted) signal, while with seperate power supplies, only one colour will fail to light. It's the railways, where reliability is almost at the same level as the aerospace industry when it comes to the choice components and limiting the chance of total failure. Yes, the components inside such signals will be expensive, but they also have to endure a lot...

More important is what you think. I’m not the one sitting in a cab, peering out to find and read them. I do find their shape a bit funny. The backplate is still quite large, but not placed around the light where it matters most. Presumably it’s to maintain a more recognizable shape or to have compatible mounting. I’m not fond of the trend to have small very bright lights. Anywhere but super far it’s going to sear your retina, perhaps even reducing clarity. Aside from the previous problem, loss of vertical positioning will take some getting used to but is probably not so bad.

-- So red, yellow and green are now the same light. Have they considered that this might be a problem for red/green colorblind drivers? By the way, you don't show much information about Eindhoven station, so here's some trivia "man-splaining": The first two stations were approximately where the field is in the middle of the aerial picture that you show around 0:47. The tracks were at ground level back then, and the "Woensel railroad crossing" (which was where the Bijenkorf is now, left in the video just after departure), was closed around 45 minutes out of every hour. After World War 2, the high level tracks were built. The roof of the current (3rd) station was made out of Bailey bridges that were left behind by the Allied forces after the war.

19:00 always nice to see, that 'old' roof. Not only there but on a few other places as well. So after seeing the new signal around 32:58 I must say: I think they needed an excuse to (re)place them... In my book if I need to focus more on A, instead of shared focus between A and B, it's bad ! The signal is significant smaller then the older one. So just justifying it by; a lot of people know it, but we need something fresh, doesn't make it right ! And technology was already there a few years. Why not keep the same size of lamp surface but make it LED ?!

The existing signals have white boxes at the back. I deduced myself that this color has been choosen instead of black or dark grey to help to distinguish a signal seen from the back from an unlit signal seen from the front. Is this correct ? Is the new signal not missing this feature ?

"There be dragons" There is a potential for trouble with "new signals". There never was a problem with implementing "single lamp". Semaphores of the old are the example: Moving color filter (with arm attached...). Trouble? With low sun conditions it could be difficult to determine color of the light from a distance. That was a reason that in many countries they use up to 8 lamps (or even more?) per signal (not counting additional displays and direction indicators used by UK Rail). This way train driver can see what is going on not by color of lamps, but also by pattern of which lamp positions are lit. (Not counting that new signals discriminate against partially color blind people who were able to work as drivers with old systems but will not be safe with new signal with the single lamp.) That is one of the reasons why it is always that red is on top, green on the bottom of the traffic lights. Some countries experimented with horizontal traffic lights... But replaced most (maybe all) horizontal lights by now. They _are_ confusing. And take conscious effort to "decode": "Reptile mind" analyze and place positions of the bright spots in nanoseconds, color recognition takes seconds sometimes. (Do you know? Scientists made some experiments with Amazonian tribes, who never see a clear sky because of the foliage. Those people were unable to see/recognize color "light blue" on the spectrum. They had no concept of/for that color. As there is no "light blue" color on British/American rainbow, as there is no single separate word for light blue. So their rainbow is of six colors, no seven as in many other countries.) So - color recognition is slow and implemented on "software" level. Light position recognition is fast as it is implemented on "hardware" level. Reflective border is useless. Only reasonable use is in road traffic signals, as it shows when an additional section of the traffic light for turn is present.
@TheDiveO
@TheDiveO Жыл бұрын
You are equalling non-discriminating road traffic with tightly controlled train traffic. They are not equal. I don't like to see the typical car driver getting near any train controls without extensive training, certification and supervision. The question whether to use a single search light design or separate lights depends on many factors, and train networks value them differently, not least the safety relevant aspects. The single search light can be realized using multi-color LEDs (which I doubt, as they are much less reliable and difficult to drive due to their common Anodes or Cathodes), or using fiber optics. The latter complicates things, so separate lights might be not so bad an idea, especially as single lights can be replaced instead of the much more complex fiber optics searchlight type. It also depends on the outdoor conditions, ...

The new signals are using technology which is already in use elsewhere, so it is proven. I wonder whether a wider backing plate (as on the existing signals) would be an advantage with the sun low in the sky behind the signal? What I did notice before we got to that point was that some existing signals have green at the top, others have green in the middle. This seems to be potentially confusing. I assume that red is always at the bottom (as in the UK) and it's just yellow and green changing places. At some point in the future you won't have to bother with these pesky lights at the side of the line, it'll all be on the desk in front of you! Which is fine until the computer crashes.........

"Coming into the modern era." How so? I would say "returning 100 years back" to when a semaphore had one light source and several filters on the arm... And returning to casualties rates of 100 years before. Why there are still "signals" in the era when we can know position of each and every train to 0.5 meters at worst? Without any satellite equipment? (you know these "radars" used to find shorts or breaks in any cable? Sometimes with millimeter precision?)

Many traffic lights (verkeerslichten) here in the US are LED, but in some parts of the country blowing snow is a problem. The old lightbulbs generated enough heat to melt any snow blown onto the lens. With the LEDs, there's almost no heat generated, and traffic lights get covered with snow and drivers cannot see what colour they are. Hebben de nieuwe spoorweg lichtseinen iets for verwarming in 't winter tegen waaiende sneeuw?

As a passenger, I am of the mind that as long as the indications given by any signal are unambiguous, then whatever form they come in is immaterial. I wonder why Prorail is developing this 'new generation signal' when the EU seems to be pushing for total immersion in ETCS with its in-cab signalling. As for your presentation of the new facts, if you had only put them in the description, then a lot of people would not have reasd it, not have seen your request for comments, so yes, this was a good way of giving the details. PS. Were trying for the 'coasting' or 'free-wheeling' record on NS? I reckon the last 28 km (roughly where the Betuweroute crossed over your path) were not under power.
@TheDiveO
@TheDiveO Жыл бұрын
Reality is cost and time. ETCS Level 2 is for high speed lines with dense schedules. You can't simply replace all signalling with ETCS L2, unless you happen to work for one of the equipment vendors or have too many shares in them. It is simply too costly. Many single lines work well with fixed track-side signalling and digital signal boxes.
