Good advice. After several diet attempts I finally started listening to my body, diet wise, exercise wise, and mentally. I went from a 62 year old feeling like 80 to feeling like 40! Tons of energy, almost zero joint pain and more flexible that when I was 20! The biggest change was stopping and actually listening to my body - know what works, what doesn’t, and be aware of you limitations. You will figure it out from there if you push yourself to be patience and listen. P.S. the food industry is not your friend.

Facts! The pain from my hips created unbearable pain down my legs and my knees. Once the hips were stretched deeply twice a day for two weeks, the pain completely dissapeared, and Matt's simple stretches work great. I'm supposed to be in a wheelchair, ha, never!!! Thank you, for being honest. Yes everyone, this does work. You'll need to do the work and learning your body is very liberating🥰 No excuses, yoga, pilates, food growing even juicing is free online💜💜💜 Thank you, Matt.

Matt is very thoughtful in thinking about the assessment of health and wellness. Thank you for educating in this video while not being critical of others who practice medicine. I would like to add my personal experience to the conversation. I have been a side sleeper all my life but as I grew older, started experiencing hip, knee and ankle pain. As I walk quite a bit when traveling in Europe, I was in really bad pain and chalked it up to arthritis and aging as I was told arthritis runs in our family and my mom, sister, and brother have had several knee surgeries. I was mentally preparing for possible surgeries in the future and took ibuprofen daily. After watching Upright Health routinely and getting common sense primers on the physiology of the body and the interoperability of joints from Matt, I decided to rethink my assumptions. Over the course of a year, I performed a serious of systematic approaches to make small corrections from the hips to the feet. 1) I stopped watching TV in bed on my side and purchased a pillow to ensure my hips and knees were aligned as I slept 2) I discovered I suffered from foot pronation and migrated to zero drop shoes to help realign my feet/ankles 3) As I have a sitting desk job, I changed my desk chair and became more purposeful about my posture and foot placement throughout the day Over the course of a year, all my pains subsided and I no longer require pain medication for daily relief. My quality of life improved greatly and surgeries were totally not the solution in hindsight. Thanks as always Matt.

Dem bones. Dem bones. Everything is magically connected with tendons and muscles but so many of us look for the quick fix, deny the magic of correctly directed self-healing, and simply believing and connecting to their hearts and minds. I've just begun this journey in my 7th decade. Your programs/videos are not only fun but offer serious, clear demonstrations of how to heal pain. Thank you so much.

You’re soooo right! By my bed rest from my diagnosis of AVN - I never moved and my muscles were atrophied. I then started having not only loss of range of motion in my hips, but soon developed knee pain. I realized the root cause was affecting all my joints because I swear all of my issues began in my lower back and NOT my hips. Anyways… I’m still working on strengthening and I’m soooo much stronger and I think that has a lot to do with me no longer believing what I’ve been told what my inevitable outcome and that was to have surgery. Thanks as always for always being so helpful!!!

My Dr told me to reduce my A1C, to lose some weight. So I changed to plant based, high fiber, began exercising even though I had pain. In just a week my pain reduced & now my pain is minimal. I do cardio about 2-3 times a day 12-15 min & at night take a 20 min sauna. I’ve lost 13 pounds without a lot of hunger or trouble. I am feeling so much better. I had to take responsibility for my health and the pain I was suffering. Dr says I don’t need surgery may never need it. I needed to wake up & take care of myself. You helped me realize this too, along with my great osteoarthritis surgeon. He also told me there is no reason for me not to work full time & I do again:) Life is all better:) no surgeries yay!!!

Hi Matt thank you for your channel - I’m 70 yrs old and have been a dancer since I was 10 (ballet and tap ) and worked professionally for quite a few years - I have been teaching ballet for a good 50 years in between working as a dancer and then being a mum to my 3 children - I am still teaching dance and have been running a class for older ladies for the past 4/5 years as well as the students I teach dancing to - I have always been used to younger girls who are more flexible to work with but since starting this older class I am very aware of their limitations and I discovered your channel about 6 mths ago and I have found it invaluable in my approach to these older ladies so thank you so much - I have bone on bone in my right hip and had pain there about 6 years ago and went straight to a chiropractor for a little while and built up the strength in my hip but it has also helped me to understand how important it is for me to help these women that I teach to keep mobile as they age ( plus myself) so thank you for your channel along with my knowledge of how the body moves and works - your sessions help me to help my ladies in the areas they are struggling with - I’ve also told them about your channel so they can keep up the excercise during the rest of the week xxx many thanks

I so appreciate and look forward to your videos!! Your expert knowledge and straightforward explanations are priceless to me! I was a former fitness instructor for nearly 20 years and am suffering w/ chronic knee pain at nearly 58 years old. (Started feeling it in 2015). (Doctor has mentioned knee replacements but I said, “Not happening.”) Getting out of bed takes an act of Congress and I have not always made it to the bathroom b/c I’m too slow. (Drives me crazy and is very depressing)!😢 All this said, I’ve always been one to advocate for my own body and since I recently found you, you have validated things I have thought for a long time. Our bodies are amazing, God given gifts, and have the potential to move the way they’re intended when we’re willing to put in the work and discover that hidden potential! Please continue putting out your INCREDIBLE & LIFE CHANGING content b/c I fully intend to figure out the 411 w/ my knees and eventually update you how I did it. Your guidance is immeasurable! All the best to you, Matt!!🤩

So true! I’ve been sitting too much this winter and I feel it in my hips and lower back AND in my neck and shoulders ( I’m 68). I watched a video of your this morning (first time watching) about stretching the hips. I got my butt out of the chair and headed to the Y and the water to work on my muscles. Immediately my hip pain was sooo much better! Why do I forget if I stop moving, I start hurting? Thank you and this is a great channel.

Really like your videos, dude. Not everything from your videos worked on me, but it was because of your videos that I started my journey towards the asian squat and having pain-free legs. I'm now doing leg stretches everyday, some passively and some actively, and it works great so far. I can now deep squat with a wide stance without any help. I still got a rounded back, but one month prior I just couldn't even stay in a 90° knee position. I still have to work on opening my hips a bit more and I'll be good. I still struggle immensely getting more flexible ankles as I'm failing the 5 inches from wall ankle mobility test by a large margin, but I'll definitely keep trying. Thanks, dude.

I usually agree with you, but with respect, I'm not sure I can agree entirely this time. I have had a number of joint injuries over the years. For some of them, the internet is full of info that surgery is the only solution, but they are typically American websites. In the UK, our NHS almost always tries physio first, and so far, this has always worked well for me.

Great video Matt. Something I learned a while back was : the first question to ask when you read a scientific study on any topic is "who sponsored the study". A great deal of the time, they are sponsored by those with a vested interest of some kind to either prove or disprove something for the sponsors benefit. People who say that science is about finding the truth are deluded.

As someone with Ehler Danlos Syndrome (Hyperflexibility), I know what you’re saying is true. Hell, doctors told me that. I need to maintain (and ideally improve, carefully, steadily, slowly) my muscular system, so I have less joint pain. The muscles are keeping my body moving correctly, at the correct angle and position, and helping me stand straight(ish). When I stop all exercises for a few months, my health immediately deteriorates and my joints start screaming.

Thanks Matt. I always find your videos thoughtful and essentially very hopeful. A while back before I saw your channel I had found a physio that quoted a study that said 'surgery plus rehabilitation exercise was little to no difference to rehabilitation exercise only' - I was trying to 'fix' a shoulder pain/limited range of motion after an old 'frozen shoulder' problem. That advice and your channel have changed the whole way I view my ageing body and approach to pain. Your videos and approach are so helpful. I wish I could get more of my circle of family and friends on to you!

As a person involved in public health in Toronto - 68 and now retired - I'd like to add a thought. One of the most common phrases I heard when something different or "unorthodox" was suggested was, " there is no scientific evidence" ... that comment PRESUMES, that whatever is being suggested has been studied and found to be untrue or unsupported. More often that not, it means it has never been studied via case-controlled blinded experiments - there is a HUGE difference between those two statements. What would be more fair to say is, "It has never been studied and we really do not know" ... but those who make $$$ would rather it be, "There is no scientific evidence" because it suggests that it HAS been studied and does not work. Word games for sure. Thanks for what you do.

I couldn’t agree with you more! I’ve had back pain every day for the last 1-1/2 to two years. Before that I’d experience back spasms a couple times a year. I found strength training helped until it didn’t. I wasn’t stretching. After my last visit to my physical therapist, he used a massage gun on me. I felt relief. I intuitively thought this has to do with my muscles. I just didn’t know where to start, because not only did my lower back hurt, my knees, mid back and both elbows. With the help of Matt’s videos and using a massage gun all over my body, I have felt so much relief in a long time. Now it’s time to put a stretching program together to do daily.

My mom is having a knee replaced tomorrow. They told her “bone-on-bone.” I am hoping that this surgery solves her problem, as she is older, and the pain and immobility are quite severe. But I thought it was weird that they never once recommended physical therapy to her. The only treatment that was ever given or recommended was steroid shots and surgery. It just seems so strange to me that physical therapy never even entered the conversation for a patient with years of persistent joint pain.

In my opinion, the US 'healthcare' treatment is more incentivized to fix the symptom rather than the actual root cause. General Practice medical books are written largely influenced by pharmaceutical companies, so the docs likely prescribe pills to address this. Surgeons want to cut, hammer, and chisel, it's what they do 🤣. Now, in critical/trauma care, you probably want western care in an emergency. But in large part, in general, it seems that the incentives are largely about tests, prescriptions, etc. The pay typically isn't about the patient's overall health status, maintenance, and improvement. So Upright Health is really geared to taking a broader approach. It's amazing how much good stretching and exercising in different approaches can correct and improve issues that meds and surgeries may only mask or even cause other problems.

I am a physician (not a surgeon or orthopedic specialist) and I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that hip girdle musculature, including quads, hamstrings, etc, absolutely do contribute to the health of the knees and whether or not you have knee pain. It’s pure physiology and mechanics of the human body. We don’t need a study for this. 95% of the time, at the very least, a trial of appropriate PT and/or OT is warranted before any kind of surgical intervention.

Hey Matt... Just so to support your theory, its not only the muscles but also the myofascia which runs throughout the body covering the major joints. That's the reason why there are multiple pain points or triggers points in case of fibromyalgia but the doctors won't tell you so....!! Treating chronic pain isn't easy....I have been suffering with chronic pain since 7-8 yrs ....but now with your ATM.... I have witnessed results and determination that if I make my muscles strong.... even my hyperlax joints won't cause me any problem. Thanks so much Matt....every word you utter is some kind of divine truth...!!!

Thank you. Great information. There's nothing anti-science about body awareness, alignment, posture, motion, structure and physiognomy. I find some well educated Physical Therapists can be very skilled and helpful. They do not prescribe drugs and surgery, and often suggest exercises. Surgeons and medical PP's usually offer drugs and specialists. The choice belongs to the individual patient.

Hey Matt, another great video. I get what you’re saying but I’d love your thoughts on my experience with gout (an arthritis, generally in the big toe & other foot joints) Gratefully this has been under control for the past few years but during an attack, my first joint of my big toe DOUBLES in size. The pain is so intense I can barely even walk on it. Mobility of that toe is zero (I used to have very flexible, mobile toes and I’m working on foot exercises to get some of that back.) Please contextualize ATM with gout. I get what you’re saying about things being connected and all but if I have searing pain in one toe that is huge and swollen and nothing in the other, and my feet experience essentially equal strength/stretching every day. I’m guessing the comparison would be trauma, like if I got hit with a bat in one arm, but not the other, but still, I’d love to hear your thoughts.

I had severe hip pain that felt like I had been kicked by a horse, it wasn't from anything broken or strained. I saw multiple doctors and even had x-rays done, finally one really smart nurse finally figured it out: I had moved about 7 years ago to a place that got much less sun light. A simple blood test showed that I was suffering from a severe Vitamin D deficiency. *I had no idea that a vitamin deficiency could cause such severe pain!* Once I started taking Vitamin D3 (they gave me high strength vitamins to start, then over the counter) and made sure I get enough sunlight, the hip pain completely went away.

I have been diagnosed with bone on bone knee arthritis but have no to very little pain. I do full squats, climb 2 stairs at a time, run downstairs, do quad curls with 60-70 lbs, goblet squats with 30-40 lbs, walking lunges 20-40 lbs, walk backwards upstairs, ski, do jumping jacks, burpees, work on the acreage around my home, perform a full cadre of upper body and core exercises, and refuse to sit more than 1/2 hr. I am 72, take NO pain meds, injections or otherwise. The only activity I cannot do that I did in the past is distance running which is ok because I now focus on strength. I want to take it further with Smith Machine squats, have some concerns with injuries. I plan on continue with my current level of activity and to "kick it up a notch or 3". The only time my knee does protest is after sitting for a period of time,

Your videos were recommended to me after i did extensive research on my chronic pain after a car accident. I'm only in my late 20s but I've always had weak knees and hips, as well as a tight neck and mid back. For YEARS, ive been trying to figure out why im in constant pain. I would do my research and tell my PCP what studies resonated with my symptoms. Her response (and she stated this almost EVERY visit) was that "i was too young for this pain." (Yes! I know! Thats why im here!) She never took my research seriously, ordering blood work and xrays on my hip and knee joints. Doctor said she didnt see anything wrong and just sent me to a PT who barely did any tests to assess what could be the issue. He gave me a simple workout routine that made no difference. Nothing progressed from their help, but maybe it was just my health care providers in particular that were inefficient. I had to stop seeing my PCP and PT since i lost my insurance at the time. Doing yoga regularly seemed to help with managing any severe pain. I thought myself to be quite successful in my chronic pain journey, even if i was constantly in mild pain. When I recently got into that car accident mentiosned earlier, everything flared to a point of being incapacitated. This was the worst pain I've ever been in. I relied on all the medical professionals provided to me too identify the problem. They all automatically treated my spine, but i still had severe pain in my hips and mid back. One day, i sneezed and i felt the sharpest pain in my pelvic area. It prompted me to look up pelvic anatomy and saw that my SI joints are what felt that sharp pain. I thought to look up clavicle anatomy afterwards, and learned more about the AC joint as well. Its so hard to notice inflammation in these joints because of the pain from their surrounding muscles. I targeted those joints and muscles with light exercise and stretching. The improvement is so much better than after the injection therapy in my spine. I still have some way to go before seeing myself being painfree, but i am able to be active again! Seeing these medical professionals for my chronic pain every week to see no progress wasted a lot of time and money. It took losing my car and a sneeze to truly find the main issues. Your videos, along with other's, helped me learn more about healing than my PCP or PT! I appreciate this kind of content!

It’s not just big muscles that cover both joints, nerves too. One possible cause of knee pain is referred pain from the hips and vice versa. As from the surgeons’ POV, they may disproportionately see more patients that actually want to do surgery, hoping for a quick fix, and the surgeon may comply with it in the end because doctors are still service providers. Then, even if they patients not that keen on surgery, they have to use their clinical judgment which is based on published research and previous experience which are both biased to choose the surgery unless they’re well aware of the bias and where to draw the line. It’s difficult to blame the doctor sometimes because some patients really push for certain treatments but perhaps there should be a bias checking principle taught in medical school so the doctors can truly remain non-judgmental and practise non-maleficience

Hi I have great respect for my GPs but do see the limitations of their training. I’ve had a lot of pain in my knees with swelling and lack of movement, they only have mild arthritis. I have a lot of arthritis in my hips, no restrictions in movement or pain. I’m trying to exercise my way out of fibromyalgia, taking paracetamol occasionally or if I’ve a swelling that causes pain I’ll take Nurofen for a few days. Trial and error. 😊

Thank you for focusing on self care! I’ve got both hip & knee pain. Lateral patella shift but also something in my left hip “catches” causing sharp pain that is short duration. I wonder if it’s loose ligaments? Or can muscles be too loose? All I know is something slips over the hip bone and believe some of my knee issues are related to this hip issue. I’m 70, female, love to hike every day. Some hikes are 20 min duration, others are hours. With varied topography. Also exercise daily, higher intensity chair exercise and stationary bike due to the knee issue. Any thoughts? Suggestions? PT has actually increased my knee pain and swelling! But I keep moving. Thanks you any thoughts you care to share. Chris

Yeah, try to find a PT to work with who believes this! In the mean time, every time I exercise it causes so much pain I can’t move for days and I’m hardly doing ANYTHING and very carefully! Depressing!

You may want to see a doctor of osteopathic medicine; they practice holistic medicine (examine the full body picture of a condition, rather than just treat the symptoms and send you out the door. They are highly skilled in listening to patients and developing a plan). They are fully trained doctors... I got to experience the services of one-- and it was mind-blowing. Very compassionate and got to the root cause of my ailment. I couldn't thank the doc enough. Everybody needs one of these incredible doctors!

I agree with the basics of your info but how do you explain range of motion and pain of osteoarthritis in which the hip joint has multiple large bone spurs. I want greatly to avoid a hip replacement but the pain and range limitations due to the bone spurs is bad-can’t even tie my shoe on the hip with the bone spurs. What’s your opinion?

Hi Susan, We can't know if the bone spurs are the issue unless you put in time to test the hypothesis. If you spend 3-6 months trying to retrain the many muscles around your hip to fire properly, get stronger, and be able to recover from work, then you might feel much better, despite bone spurs. The larger question is whether bone spurs can reliably predict pain or range of motion reduction. In knees, the answer is no. bjsm.bmj.com/content/53/20/1268 www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2665913121000509 I can't find decent relevant literature for osteophytes (bone spurs) around the hip, but the overall point is ATM up until the point that you're TRULY 100% convinced you can't improve it yourself. Notable perspective: Current best practice guidelines for back pain is to NOT DO MEDICAL IMAGES on medical patients because every scan will turn up something that "LOOKS" bad. But the things that show up in your spine as "damage" are nothing more than normal anatomical variations / changes that have no correlation with pain. It took decades for some doctors to finally admit that spine surgery and x-rays/mris to "solve" back pain were a sham. But you don't have to look far to find highly profitable spine surgery clinics and hospitals still running the same game despite a lack of scientific evidence. In closing: MAYBE the bone spurs are the cause of pain in your hip. If they are, what's the solution? Surgical removal of your femoral head? That hardly makes sense. Reshaping of the femoral head? If you like those answers, then you can pursue those... But if you DON'T, then you need to run the mental and physical exercise of assuming that the bone spurs are NOT the issue, and do everything possible to avoid surgery.

@@Uprighthealth I am aware that the x-rays can show issues with the hip joint without someone having any pain. However, the doctor did range of motion and realizes that for me to walk more than a city block is some thing I can’t do are there any specific?

The problem with trusting evidence-based medicine, and institutional science in general, is that this trust rests on a tacit folk theory of sociology that claims society automatically distills true knowledge. This is a really weak idea because it ignores incentives and is nothing more than magical thinking and groupthink. The same applies to peer review. Jason Fung has a good video on this.
