After suffering from hip pain for the last couple of years that has steadily worsened, including so much pain sleeping at night that it was waking me up several times a night, I found this video about three weeks ago. After ONE DAY of doing these, I felt IMMEDIATE relief. And one day meant 5 reps each. That was all it took! I now do them nearly every day. I still have some hip pain, and pain in the groin, but it doesn’t wake me up at night anymore. Thank you thank you thank you!!!

I've (54 y/o female) had at least 3 months of bilateral hip, groin, upper thigh and at times left shin pain. All positions were uncomfortable especially standing after sitting. This video came up as a suggestion and after doing one set of each plus the ones in the 'pain when sleeping' video, I was pain free the next day! I keep waiting for it to come back, but it has not as of yet. I didn't believe others who commented on relief after one day of the exercises, but it was true for me! I really don't know how or why, but i was so happy to be able to do my job today (which involves a lot of repetitive stand up/sit down motions. My energy level was super high as well. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Well, I started your exercises for the hip, doing them in the morning after waking. The pain intensified to a point I thought my head was going to blow off my shoulders... but then...... this morning I was at the kitchen counter, and the pain was bad I was struggling to make coffee, and I simply lifted my left leg from the knee allowing my hip to fall into place... and it popped, GLORY! The intense torque dissipated immediately. It still feels weak and wobbly... but have mercy, the pain has lessened. For love and mercy, THANK YOU! I am subscribed!

I LOVE that this video addresses an issue that may be deeper/more complex than simply calling a painful hip a labral tear. As an active individual I didn’t understand what could be the root of my pain and dreaded a labrum tear diagnosis. Thank you for not only giving an introduction and explanation, but also providing exercises to target the problem.

Before a week I was 100% healed. You are God sent. Thanks so much for this.🙏 I was really planning on going for check up and was so sure I'll need a surgery cos the pain was too much -i was practically limping. I was so afraid of the diagnosis I might get in the hospital so I started browsing about flexor strain. Tried many suggested workout from different other KZbin videos but it only got worse UNTIL I FOUND YOU. Just your two SIMPLE workout changed my story. After 16 years of limping due to a shar pain in the left hip I found a sort of miracle exercise: grasping a foot stool, kneel down fully pushing ones hips down and back to get the hip forward and stand back up leaning on the stool. Two reasons its broadly applicable to the general public: 1, most people do not get off the floor often and need practice and exercise at that; 2, forward hip position is one of the most crucial keys to sitting posture and habitual sitting in chairs tends to destroy that.

Doing these exercises and ones from your other videos had an immediate effect on me. I just started doing karate, stretching and strengthening my body in all sorts of new ways. Simultaneously I started practicing my deep squat, which I thought would be a great all-around hip exercise. But then recently I started getting some pain on the outside of my hip, and after googling "karate hip pain" I was deep in scientific articles about "Femoroacetabular Impingement" aka bone-on-bone hip pain. To make sense of it, I turned to KZbin (maybe not the best idea generally, but it did end up working for me this time I think), and thank the algorithm for guiding me here. The exercises have been an instant relief on my hips, and as long as they feel good, I don't think I'm gonna worry too much about my bones. I'm not even gonna stop with the squats. Maybe I'll turn down the intensity a little, and definitely listen to the pain, but I think my hips need work in all aspects. So, thanks a million!

Some things that helped me were a simple Tai Chi practice for Beginners and Seniors, and Feldenkrais, specifically Jodi Kranz who also has a You tube channel. Simple ways to move and help develop neuroplasticity which is an essential part of moving our muscles. I trust this is not offensive to you, Matt because I think your channel is great and I am learning a lot from you. Thx.

I was recently diagnosed with chondrosarcoma, which is a rare bone cancer growing into my right acetabulum, causing pain and waddling when I walked. If I did all of these suggested exercises and stretches and continued neglecting to get examined by a real doctor there is a high likelihood I would have broken my pelvis. The first x rays showed a possible cyst, so I got an MRI which showed the cancer growing around the acetabulum. Please don't ignore your pain. I recently retired from surveying and worked many days in spite of my pain, and wish I had gone to a competent doctor sooner.

You bring up a good point. However, most should know quickly if these exercises don’t improve their situation. The tough part is getting the doc to order the MRI. Insurance makes them wait at least 6-8 weeks after an x-ray to order the MRI. That’s a great time to be looking into these sorts of strength training exercises.

Those two exercises for full hip rotation are already relieving my mysterious, chronic hip pain. Biking, playing drums, jogging, squatting--too much movement for me in only one plane. As a busy drummer and a health professional, I can advise you strongly to raise your drum seat up so that your thigh bone is pointing slightly downwards. This means the angle of the hip is such that the hip joint is higher than the knee joint. This essentially opens up the hip a little and reduces the impingement we often see with drummers and especially with the bass drum side leg/hip. Chronic flexure during drumming will cause a slight increase in bone mass near where the thigh bone comes close to the labrum . As a result this will cause chronic inflammation and potentially damage your labrum, both which also may cause a cyst to form causing further discomfort and pain. This is a common drummer injury .. do yourself a favor and raise your seat till your knee Height is below your hip joint level. Use a wider throne and preferably one with a lower back support. This helped me immensely and helped me avoid surgery. Good luck bro

I finally found someone who is aligned with what I've thought for years but didn't know what to do about it. My sudden sharp hip pain turned out to be a fist-sized TUMOR right where the femoral artery/vein/nerve met, no joke. Apparently, it had been growing since I was a teen. This hip pain appeared in my early 60s, came out of nowhere. So painful, I couldn't walk, crawl, lay down- just murderous. It had nothing to do w/muscle, tendons, etc. Paramedics had to carry me out. The ER docs were almost useless until one decided to throw me in the CT where they saw the tumor. Then everything went downhill. I tell you this to consider all options, not just issues you think related to musculature or connective tissues.

Started to do these. Best advice for me was to do more exercise on my weak side, and even if I barely get my leg off the ground on exercise number one don't let back tip, keep straight. This exercise used to make me worse, because I was doing it with bad form, and has now has made me much better. 75 years old, small scoliosis, huge lordosis, and doc advised no surgery as pelvis is fused to spine at S3-tailbone. This is helping!!

These exercises plus some others for the gluteus minimus/medius have really helped, though I still feels some aches and tightness, the sharp pains have gone away. Thank you!

I can’t believe I saw your message. That is what just happened to me! I had CoVid 2 months ago. After 5 weeks of variable symptomatology I suddenly had this stabbing pain in my hip and thigh. Luckily 2-3 weeks later I saw this video; obtained considerable relief a few days later. Now I’m walking the beach again, and resuming greater activity in the pool. CoVid is still wearing me out, but thanks to this video I have hope for my leg. Thanks to you both (message writer, and vid creator).

The point at 5:24 is so true. I think even people who deadlift and squat a lot can have underdeveloped hip muscles and will just outsource the power required to other muscles which just causes further imbalances.

I thought powerlifting and sprints were all I needed. I did some agility drills too like side to side shuffles and light sprints with directional changes around cones but it wasn't enough (I also sat too much when not exercising). My hips are a disaster right now and my butt muscles like to irritate my sciatic nerves plus the sharp pains the video shows. It's annoying how many people I know did the same lifting I did or don't exercise at all and have no pain. I may have fared better if I stuck to martial arts.

I have a severe brain injury that effects the controls of my muscles but also lost 30lbs from muscle deteriorating in my coma and the leg surgeries they had to do to fix my leg breaks has thrown off my ability to gain muscle properly but these help with my hip muscles that I need to strengthen for me to continue relearning to walk! Matt @uprighthealth, I have watched a ton of videos after being diagnosed with right inner hip arthritis. Yours is the first one I've seen that emphasizes range of motion. Your movements in this video include way more range of motion than any of the others I have watched. And those others have not been that effective for a year now. I'm going to give yours a try in this video because of the range of motion aspect. Thank you for publishing this video, Matt!

For me it was piriformis syndrome making me think sciatic nerve. My butt would hurt after a move then go away, then come back, then go away again. This was driving me crazy. My doctor wanted to medicate, NO! Then I found this channel and with Matt's wisdom and sharing of knowledge, I am able to correct years of bad posture habits and now my intermittent butt pain has almost diminished completely. There is a reason humans were meant to squat all their lives.

🙏❤ All I can say is Thank You! Wow! You just gave me hope. I am 43, and just diagnosed with 3 herniated discs. 3,4,5. But the bigger issue, is the extreme hip pain on my left side. In my groin. And front thigh. And upper buttocks. Maybe coming from discs or not. Who knows right? I have been so depressed. Feeling trapped in my body. A very active person, being a proffesional organizer, street vendor, I cycle, and go dancing regularly. Now, I can't do any of that withought forcing myself through it. My partner sent me this. And I feel hope from your very real talk. I love it. Entertaining. Funny. Easy to understand. Can really see everything you are saying. Makes so much sense. I am so excited to add these excercises to my routine of RIIPS..lol. And my stretches. Refuse to do injections. I only take Advil now.. And lidocaine patches. I was doing the frog position sleeping too, but realized I was prob making it worse and you confirmed that. 🙏 Perscription pills haven't worked. To everyone.. Hang in there. You are not alone. What I am learning, is really pay attention to your body.. Try different things.. And learn what works. These exercises seem like they will help alot. So thanks again for what you do sir! Wishing everyone well! 💪💖✨✨✨✨

@M2 It's very possible that your hip problems are from the nerves at your hernated disks. The hip exercises won't do any harm. But you may need to do sensible things for your back. A real expert on such things: Stuart McGill has written two books about such things. They are intended for experts, but some of the advice might help you. I remember just a few things from them. The first is that you should start with building up stability, not movement in the back, The second thing is that all the usual abs training load the spine too much. It's because they are dynamic, and bends the spine. I was operated for an acute hernated disk 30 years ago. It took years to get compleatly free of all weakness. But a rowing machine worked for me. Because there you load the back without bending the spine. Now I can do all the exercises Stuart McGill warns about, such as hanging leg raises. I'm not a medical expert, although I obviously have a very long (35 years) interest of these things, even after I myself got rid of all problems,

I was a runner for years, but eventually got hip pain -- then was diagnosed with FAI. The exercises I was given did nothing to help and often caused more pain in the long term of continued practice. This was the first time that 1) I finally understand the CAUSE and 2) feel like I can actually DO something about it. A couple of weeks ago, I tried some of my old favorite pilates exercises to increase the strength in my hips, but the muscle degeneration was so much (due to thinking in terms of "bone instead of muscle") I couldn't even do the leg lifts. I tried these out -- I can actually do them!! I'm so thrilled, I cried .... ;oD. Thank you!!!

"Robin Griggs Wood" Glad you found exercises right for you. However I could scream about how often "Physical therapy" is recommended for pain especially pain in joints and oftentimes at the hip. I have known people who have been made worse by physical therapy and by horrific exercises that make you continually move an injured or damaged joint or body part . The exercises shown in this video would not do me any good. I have really bad hip pain and it hurts to even twist at the waist a bit while sitting down or by bending down slightly. Doing sit-ups hurts at the hip joint so I had to quit them. You can take it for granted if you don't have the hip pain I have, but some slight movements , reaching, turning, bending really is carried out to a large extent from the hip area. Sometimes exercising the area is not the answer at all.
@RobinGriggsWood

@@obscurelyvague -- My hip pain was excruciating -- so much that there were days I could not even walk. I would go to bed in tears and wake up in tears. Since I have been doing these (and thinking "muscles instead of bone") I'm actually able to walk again. Everyone wants to think, "Oh, my pain is worse than anyone's. No one else could actually know what _real_ pain is." ... to think "I'm a special case" or "my life is worse than yours" because it makes it somehow "justifiable" to be debilitated. My friend, I ask first, what is valuable to you about keeping your chronic pain? ... does it keep others in sympathy with you? ... does it help you to justify being weaker than someone else? Those aren't accusations, truly! -- they are genuine questions. Ask yourself, "why am I holding onto this pain?". It will open doors. Otherwise, "Argue *_for_* your disabilities and you get to *_keep_* them." The only thing that changes a condition of life is to make the decision to change it -- and accept no other options.

My hip issue is so bad, I am no longer able to do anything with my son (who is Autistic and has special needs) and requires all of my time and energy.
