Our dear Engelbert's voice is totally amazing, when singing he carries you through a romantic movie that begans and ends in one single song. WOW! What talent that only God grants. Hi @Glow3-With all due respect, I'm not so sure he exactly fell off the face of the earth-but rather, he did redirect his energies a bit. From 1970-1990, he was proven to have fathered 2 illigitimate children, with 2 different women, yet his wife Pat remained devoted and by his side til her death last year.(they're both devoted Catholics). Humperdink stayed very busy thru the 1990's and beyond, he lent his voice to an episode of the cartoon 'Beavis & Butthead', he released several gospel hits, earning multiple grammy nods, he did "The Long and Winding Road", ''Let There Be Love"... in 2010 he released the double album "Englebert Calling", he was the UK's Eurovision rep in 2012 performing ''Love Will Set You Free"...in 2017, he did covers of Ed Sheeran's 'Photograph' and Bruno Mars "Just The Way You Are", and released "Englebert 50", in 2018 he released his album ''Warmest Christmas Wishes'', 2019, as a birthday gift to Pat, he performed and appeared in the music video ''You" and released his album, ''Reflections'', in 2020 he released "Sentiments" and this year, he's provided songs for no less than 3 movie soundtracks. Englebert is 86 years YOUNG, and as Fil said, he's still today touring! IMO, he shows very little sign of even slowing down...

I think we have plenty of great singers now, but trust the music industry to stamp out individuality and turn the singers/performers into cookie cutter vanilla pasty average money makers. Which is why I am glad that people like Dimash stay out of US. The American music industry would start ruining his fantastic, amazing qualities that make him come across as other-worldly in his music. Just imagine how amazing the good artists would be today if they were left alone to grow and stretch their talent!

Hello Linda. That’s what I meant, (partly). He was a very big Las Vegas attraction. Just Like Elvis was and Tom Jones still is as far as I know. However, to many people he seemed to just disappear. He hasn’t stopped performing, but he’s been predominantly out of the public eye, as far as Vegas shows go. There’s a really great documentary that shows what he’s been doing. If I can find the link I will send it to you, here. Perhaps you’ve already seen it. I was talking with a friend about a year ago and he came up in conversation. My friend had told me about this fantastic documentary. Thank you for the reply. Have a wonderful evening.

Dale Baker Engelbert is not a crooner. He actually hates being called one. The word crooner comes from the word croon, meaning to sing softly. Crooners generally have a one octave range. Engelbert has an impressive 3 1/2 I don't think he sang sadly, he did have the ability to make me weep. Not the same thing. As for softly, I call it caressing the lyrics He is a powerful dynamic, breathtaking~ an unforgettable voice.

All of your facts are spot-on. I used to play drums for Errol Mahal, an Indian singer from Madras, the same town that Englebert was born in. His mother was actually Indian, his father British, which gives him that dark, exotic look. He told me a few things that I'd like to share with your fans. He confirmed that Englebert's real name is "Jerry Dorsey," where he began in India as an Elvis impersonator where my friend used to attend his shows (when Englebert appeared in America many year later, Errol met him backstage and he actually remembered him!). When he got signed by Tom Jones' same manager, he also changed his name when he thought that 'Jerry Dorsey' was far too boring, simply by giving him the name of the same famous German opera composer who wrote "Hansel and Gretel," a name so complicated that he knew that people would continue to talk about him, just as Arnold Schwarzenegger did, many years later (Arnold's first stage name was 'Arnold Strong,' which he dumped after his first movie "Hercules in New York," bombed). What I l particularly like about Englebert is how he voices and puts his own unique inflections into all his songs, emphasizing certain words and phrases like nobody else does. I never get tired of listening to his recordings, all of which have become modern day classics.

He is an awesome singer and entertainer that if there were still phone books he could sing it and make it sound good. I love how he projects and does not eat the mic screaming. ❤️ If you search and see the demo, he sings on the jet and it’s awesome. Then on stage they show him how to adjust the mixer as he did not like the sound in the venue and he said why did you not show me this before. One of the guys tried to sing his song, Enge gave him a chance and took the mic and wow what a change. 86 and still going strong.

This is my fave EH song and my fave version. He knocks it out of the park as few others ever have on live TV. Maybe Elvis' "If I can dream" and Dusty's " You don't have to say you love me" on their live shows match up, but by far Englebert in this version takes one's breath away. The melody, the arrangement, the lyric and Englebert's amazing voice. Thank you so much Phil for reviewing this song.

Engel just turned 88 and he’s still performing. In fact I think he has a tour coming up very soon in Canada. He only stopped performing during Covid. He contracted Covid as did his wife Patricia who was already suffering from Alzheimer’s. She passed from Covid in February of 2021.

He is absolutely one of the greatest singers. I’ve belonged to his Fan Club from” Please Release Me” He is 86 now, and still has a a beautiful voice. He is a very special man; he stays close to his fans on his television “ Tuesday Museday” , for many years, also since pandemic he gives free concerts from his home. There will be another one this coming Thursday , 2:00 eastern time.

Loved this video analysis. I knew his name was taken from a composer but it would good to hear the background. Superb singer, honestly. There’s once or twice I thought at times in the lower register he sounded like Elvis Presley…Just my opinion. He has/had a much richer and smoother tone than Tom Jones, really soothing to listen to and as for his range, really great. Isn’t it amazing how many of the older stars could actually sing. How many stars today could sing live and still produce the equivalent of a studio version, ie, no mistakes, no cracks. Not a lot I’m sure. I was a kid when this song was released but we had it on record at home. My parents would have played it along with other greats.

I am grateful to the person that suggested this! I think it is a stunning performance. I was crazy into the Beatles back in the day. Engelbert was on the periphery in those days for me. I don’t think you could have chosen a better performance. I haven’t seen another channel with such top notch analysis and you have a wonderful personality. Talent with passion. Tippy top!

My mom loved him too. She passed in 2010. Hearing his music brings back sweet memories. She had a fear that dad had some jealousy about him, which he denied. Still mom didn't believe him, so she stopped listening to Engelbert out of love for dad!

I grew up listening to Engelbert because my mother loved him. I'm not ashamed to say I was that 13 yo in the 70's listening to his greatest hits on my 8 track recorder.😂🥰 He will always be one of the greatest singers due to his one of a kind voice, and it didn't hurt that he was so handsome.🥰🥰❤️❤️ Edited: And I completely agree that Engelbert *wasn't* a crooner. It's an insult to his gift to call him that. He had far more range than any crooner.😌❤

Thank you Fil for finally analyzing Engelbert Humperdinck! I have been asking for such a long time and what a pleasure to finally see. Your analysis was wonderful as always… To hear Engelbert Isolated voice says so much to his abilities, perfect pitch and what he’s able to do with his voice and breath control. He certainly deserves to be recognized for his outstanding artistry!

He wowed the sell-out audience with every song he sang. He is such a beloved singer and entertainer. I adore his music. And to top the evening off, I was one of the lucky ones to catch one of his red handkerchiefs that he throws out to the audience at the end of his shows! 🥰
