Small records: These were used in early jukeboxes. Each has a single song recorded on it. This is shown to be the jukebox in Vander's bar later in the episode. Are the blue crystals 'the Arcane': In this show 'arcane' is another word for 'magic'. Arcane is actually an English language word meaning, 'rare or specialized knowledge' (e.g. "the arcane details of patent law"). It has been around for centuries, but was seldom used and thus most people didn't know it's meaning. However, over the past several decades it has been used relatively frequently in various works of fiction to refer to rare / specialized knowledge of magic (e.g. "the wizard had long studied arcane secrets to gain his powers"). Since many people still don't really know the word, the context of those references has led to it being mis-interpreted as a word for magic itself... effectively creating a new definition.

I don't actually think English has a word for how attractive Mel is. What elevates Arcane is just how nuanced and readable all the characters eyes are. They really leaned into show-don't-tell, lots of dialogue was cut if they could get the same meaning across with just a look. I know you've finished season 1 at this point so if you haven't already, I'd suggest watching the music video for Imagine Dragon's 'Enemy' it features more scenes of young Powder, Vi and the gang that aren't in the show.
