I've heard him do this so many times, and each time I'm floored all over again that he could have gotten it so right-- not a false note. James Brown would have gotten a kick out of it, I'll bet. And I'm with you on Aguilera-- I was surprised at her being able to do it the way she did, too (I'm just relieved you said her name after that pause, because if you'd said Michael Bolton, we'da had to've had words, you and I). Anyway, your reactions are always interesting and fun and feel completely spontaneous and for real, and you always make me laugh, too. No he is not Country, this is a Blues/Soul man. He may have some Country type runs, and some songs geared more towards that sound, but his voice fits in better in Blues tracks. I've "corrected" people many times, that Chris Stapleton is a blues singer. He does sing some country, but what I listen to is the blues of Chris Stapleton. Tennesse Whiskey is a blues song, which is how I was introduced to Chris... too many people try to label it country, but it's not. BLUES people, BLUES! Oh and Toney, if you want to add yet another version to you best covers of "This Is A Man's World", listen to Angelina Jordon's version, then (even though you don't have to) put it into perspective by thinking about how old she was when she sang it, and she did SANG it.

Anyone who says this man doesn't have soul, is clinically brain dead. I bet James Brown would ne proud of this cover. Period. My understanding on this song is that Stapleton did a set at this club, and another band followed. The band here isn't his, and this song wasn't planned. Stapleton did this shit cold with a strange band and zero rehearsal. But I've been wrong before.

I think it's futile/doomed to be inaccurate and understate his talent, to attempt to pigeonhole Stapleton. He's a country boy who grew up with country music and loves it...and who is also steeped in many other kinds of music-- including and especially the blues, r&b and soul-- all of it having been listened to, loved and played so much in his years of yeoman's work in the music business (and before), that whatever is just right for what he's feeling and aiming to express, comes out at just the right time and in just the right way. Kind of like growing up speaking several languages and having the right phrase from the right language come to mind in order to express something with the right connotations/tone.
