I live in the "GCC" - Kuwait in particular. This exact truck is still in production and you can buy a 2024 model right off toyota right now,. Newer editions do come with some modern-day upgrades and packages such as, "New headunit with AndroidAuto/CarPlay, LED headlights, Automatic transmission, Snorkel, (ABS/EBD/BA/VSC/TRC/HAC, Lane Assist, Cruise Control)" Fun fact: this truck is known as "شاص - /Shas/" in the Middle East which means a literal "Chassis"

But the foreigners ... wow. When they see it, it's like they just saw a family member or long lost friend. They smile, wave, and just can't stop staring, pointing, and smiling. I put 120,000 more miles on it before selling it to my brother who put another 90,000 miles on it when he sold it. I should have bought it back from him. Tough as nails and would haul much more than its stated capacity without flinching.

They are indestructible. In New Zealand while mucking around in a river a 70 series got stuck on a large rock and all 4 wheels were not touch the river bed. After a couple of hours it was left. It was sitting in the middle of the river for several weeks. It was checked to make it was still in place. On one check only the top part of the cabin was visible with the river running through it. When finally pulled out it fired in to life while being towed. The seats and seat belts were replace and the wiring was ok.

To be fair fresh water and salt water makes a big difference. I love Toyota, but I'm sure many other cars would have done the same. Years ago at a shop I worked at, one of the customers had bought a "cheap" flood truck (Ram) that had been exposed to salt water. As far as I know it was never fixed because the damage to wiring was so extensive.

AMD, The Land Cruiser 70/75 Series is the 'real deal'. I wish Toyota would bring them up to North American standards and sell them here. I didn't know many of these and always wondered if those numbers were just unused. Did they increase the numbers when they made the front wider for the V8? Also where is the 72?😂And models correspond to the existing numbers?

These trucks are found pretty much everywhere, but North America. They are still common to find in Latin America, Middle East, Africa and of course Australia. You can even find 2024s and don't look very different from this one. They also had some other chassis variations available in short and longer versions. Same with parts, you can find them everywhere except North America.

I absolutely love these things, they are unkillable. The moment I saw the front end, I noticed the Saudi national emblem on the grille. Depending on what country you're in, they all had local names for it; in Saudi they were called the "Shaas" from the word for chassis. In Kuwait, they were called "Abu Shanab", with Shanab being Arabic for mustache, because the early variants had a front bumper that supposedly resembled one. Good times, great trucks. For the first time ever, the newest generation is offered with an automatic transmission, which deviates from it's long standing tradition of having a stick shift only. Thank you for putting this video together!

These old brutes are as reliable as "John Wayne's" boots, as they say. They love to work. I have owned a carbureted "86 FJ62 series "high roof" S wagon for 26 years now, same chassis and suspension, different body, that's done over 700k km it still runs like new, no oil use ,the thing will outlive me. Yup, it seeps oil all over the place (anti rust system! Lol) but I know how to use an oil bottle and grease gun and the right hole to stick it in, so no problem. Just change in time and grease it and you're good to go. It's done many long trips fully loaded into the outback, never let me down.

My 1st vehicle was a '79 Toyota pickup. I believe it was the first yr Toyota 4x4 pickups in the US. It had the external hooks on the bed as well as the dual slide latch locking system. Good simple design. I really enjoy your channel. Always great content. 👍

I have a 2003 Toyota hilux in south america, last year made in Japan, and it still has the hooks and latches on the bed. My friend's Hilux, 2012, has the internal latches on the gate, and he has had replace the internal springs that rusted out.

In Venezuela, leaded gasoline was used until 1999, so locally assembled J80s and J70 had carburated 1FZ engines, then fuel injection was used form 2000 and onwards.

I’ve spent a lot of time in Saudi, Kuwait, and Iraq during my Air Force days and was surprised that every truck seemed to be a tan or white Toyota!! In Saudi, the RSAF gave us coupons to fill up our military trucks (Ford and Chevy) and gas in Riyadh came out about a dime a gallon!!!

Does this bring back memories from my decades in KSA and Kuwait. These are seen daily in the desert, the military uses them. Recently here in Spain I witnessed a large car hauler will 10 of those on board. Yes all the same tan color. I still remember Abdullah with his brother and son in the cab and wives riding in the bed. This was common place in Kuwait and KSA.

Quality and simplicity over marketing gimmicks - love it. That’s why I’m still driving my 1983 Toyota pickup, which has the same two handle tailgate.
