The Rodecaster Duo is my favorite audio product lately and I think it solves a LOT of problems in the streamer/creator audio space, while introducing a couple of its own. And now all the Rode gear is available in white!

I love how this video is edited down to look like it's on a VHS tape from the 4:3 to the overall filter. While I'm not in the market for a new setup (I'm happy with my tonor xlr mic and neewer nw-100 phantom power all being run through sonic studio III ) I will highly consider this type of setup for the future, so it's pretty dang informative and who knows it might even help to tidy up my desk somewhat.

I wish more creators would edit in 4:3 it's a cool aesthetic. To be real some panasonic cameras film in 4k 4:3 anamorphic which can be better for workflow creating long form and short form content since you can crop and have room for both 16:9 and 9:16 aspect ratios.

I like it, but I also dislike it when he reviews hardware, and it filters the detail into some weird mess that kills the detail while the transition screen effects are crisp and clear. Odd choices should make the product shots clear, and the transition filtered the same as the rest of the video.

Hey man, HUGE fan of your stuff. Wasn't sure if it was called out already, but I owned the original RCP and upgraded to the RCPII as soon as it dropped. At least twice in this review of the Duo, you referenced the 1/4" "inputs" and pointed to the two 1/4" monitor outputs. The only analog audio inputs are via the XLR/1/4" combo jacks (of which there are indeed two on the RC Duo) and the rest are virtual inputs via the USBs, Bluetooth or the integration with the Wireless Go. If you do make a follow-up, that might be worth calling out. Thankfully the RCP current firmware allows for some excellent mix-minus controls, but to run a turntable and an HDMI audio extractor for gaming consoles I had to set up an RCA - 1/4" to a separate RCA switch and run everything into my 2 & 3 channels linked in the RCPII as a stereo pair. You're the best at what you do, man, so I hope this is taken as respectfully as intended. Looking forward to the next video! ❤

Just rewatched. I definitely refer to them as XLR or 1/4" combo jacks. The b-roll was just generic b-roll of the ports and me pointing at ports. I'll make sure it's more clear next time

I LOVE this setup. I have the PSA1 mic arm, but bought into the Beacn Mic and Mix Create during the hype wave of reviewers. I wish I had seen your follow up video where you had finally given up on the mic. I think your criticism is totally valid and I’ve just found it impossible to get the microphone sounding exactly how I want it, just seems boxy in a way I can’t fight against with EQ or tweaking. I do LOVE the Mix Create though, it has been an absolute game changer to my audio work flow and capabilities. I love how fast I can mute and adjust various sources and apps on the fly, and no longer having to battle through Stream Deck menus for volume control is great. With all that said, this mixer looks soooooo much more capable than the Mix Create, like it feels like it gives the buyer way more room to grow. The Mix Create was easy to jump into and use, but there is only so much that can be done.

Just bought the Podmic USB a few days ago and I LOVE IT. Built like an absolute tank and fantastic recording quality. They definitely added a little more oomph after the original sounded a bit thin. I've had no concerns with this one, but that could vary depending on your voice. Mics sound different for everyone. Still... This is the highest quality mic I've tested and I've tested quite a few recently. I highly recommend it.

Well a year ago i would pass it because 2-3 virtual audio inputs are laughable in 2023/2024. But to be honest since OBS added the capture of software audio from programs my need for this is basically gone. The OBS future works so well that i don't even use virtual audio devices anymore. OBS added so many feature in the last 12-18 month that fixes workflows its insane. The audio sounds really clean so this might actually be the thing that carries us throw the next couple years. Rode stuff in very very high quality so it should be good for a long time. The only thing but thats really looking for stuff is, does it support the "mobile" rode stuff? Like the wireless go and similar. But to be fair thats really edge cases but really the last thing that comes to my mind.

Thanks for mentioning the lack of an aux input. I love my GoXLR but it doesn't work on the Mac Studio so I've been looking for a cross-platform alternative. Without an aux input I can't connect my DJ controller which is the cornerstone of my stream, so that's a deal breaker. Was looking at the Rodecaster Pro II but you need to use up two faders for a stereo input which is awkward. And we already know the issues with BEACN lol... So far the GoXLR still reigns supreme for my use case.

In terms of the "You don't get anything from the network port". I find the over-the-air software updates to be super convenient. I know it's not a huge deal, and you can do it over USB - I believe this is still a huge step up from something like the Tascam Mixcast 4 that requires manually installing the new firmware from an external USB drive. But yeah... NDI would be insane if they ever add it!

I bought a Rodecaster pro 2 pretty much the moment it came out, made dual pc streaming so much easier. But I feel that rode has dropped the ball on coming out with features for it. Maybe now that the duo have come out they will put in more resources to the software side. Virtual inputs, this would make so much for it, specially the 6 fader one. Their software, I know you wont be able to change the faders since they are not motorized but this goes back to the virtual inputs. Also being able to set up routing, filters for mics and so on in the software. FX library, voice changer library. Voicemod collab if they don't want to make their own version of it. Make it easy to bind pads to voicemod voicechanger, I have managed to route it via a midi script but that is a big hurdle for average users.

Referencing timecode 12:02. The know the funny thing is I use the Cloudlifter CL-2, and I have NO noise at all in my audio setup. So I don't really understand why the CL-1 is having that issue. The CL-2 is also a dual input gain booster so I don't know if maybe it's designed a little differently than the CL-1. Just interesting and odd to me. The only noise I hear out of my Scarlet 2i2 is just CPU electric noise, which to be fair, my headphone dial was tuned up all the way, but mostly 100% of my recordings are clean with no noise to detect really.

i bought a Rodecaster Duo thinking it would be a good replacement for my goXLR and i just couldn't get over not having the multitrack audio sources. i like being able to control my mic volume, discord chat volume, music/game volume, and control the audio to my second pc. Sadly, as much as i wanted to love it. It was just missing some of the functionality i felt as if i couldn't live without. maybe i set it up wrong, or maybe i just didn't give it enough time to play around with. i ended up returning it and going back to my GOxlr. perhaps in the future i would give it another chance, given they add some more audio sources. But as it sits it just didn't fit my current setups demands and expectations at a $500 price tag.

oh mr. I'm curious if you are using the Rode Unify software? It opens up a lot of features for the virtual channels. At least on the Streamer X. I use that and have OBS capturing each virtual channel, so Game, Chat, System, Browser, Music, etc. Rode Central doesn't seem to open them all up, but Unify does. That would probably alleviate a ton of your issues there.

Can you explain the separate audio sources issue for me? I thought you could do that with this, but maybe I am wrong. For instance, couldn't you control your mix audio level, discord audio, and game audio from this? I thought it was similar to the Beacn mix in that way.

I ask only because you didn't mention it in the video (as far as I could tell), but when you tested the noise floor, did you adjust the gain on the Rode so that the actual volume of the mix matched between every booster? Obviously if one of them boosts the signal more, I'd expect it to have more noise if you don't normalize. I know Julian Krause did a video on boosters and I feel like the differences weren't this stark.

Can 100% confirm the Cloudlifter CL-1 Specifically gives me hiss/noise with an SM7B. I've used it on both the Roland Bridge Cast and the GoXLR, got noticeable and infuriating hiss on both. The ONLY thing that fixed it was swapping to the Cathedral Pipes Durhman MKII, a much cheaper cloudlifter alternative. I got 2 exchange CL-1s from Sweetwater, an EMI filter and a Power conditioner, the CL-1 was the problem.

To be honest I was never that impressed by the GoXLR compared to pre-existing pro audio interfaces. However the variety of different and pretty cool features on this thing does genuinely I think make it really worthwhile and pretty darn innovative device. The other interesting thing here is that it's probably basically got an ARM smartphone SoC inside there running some full blown (but custom) version of Linux on the device itself. (which actually reminds me... that Ableton have done something similar hardware wide now with their recent Ableton Push 2 controller or whatever it was recently announced / released). But the main question I think is the whole longer term support / compatibility. Which is then well... it depends a lot. However what would be pretty good (best case) would be that Rode makes all the interface / controls accessible thru properly documented public HTTP REST apis. Or similarly at least STABLE and properly understood APIs that doesn't silently keeps on changing behind your back. This is basically what the GN openpleb RGB initiatives was all abouts.... but also the MIDI for controlling some things is already good enough (for those bits). So it depends a lot really. And also what with the specific USB protocols support and other technicalities. I don't really see any point moaning about any of it, just that for that initial lump sum, you want a good product longevity / total lifetime. Since none of the other stuff you connect up to it actually has any sort of 'shelf life'. The mic isn't going to go obsolete. Neither is your PC, or any of the other things attached to it. And for £500 I tend to think: this is the price of some real pro audio thunderbolt interface. Which is then pretty nice "does the job" too. (but along with other random seperate pheripherals like the Stream Deck, midi controller etc). But then not with those wider variety of special cool features. So this bargain or choices between rock solid core features set, versus what (is required) a rock solid ongoing proprietary firmware and software support. To get that all in 1 box solution. I'm just surprised a bit they didn't go the whole hog and incorporate something like an AES or Dante network port too while they were at it. Since it has the ARM Soc in it. Then it would have been even cooler.

Can I run my PS5 through it so I can control and patch my audio and chat to my PC like I can with the GoXLR Mini? Or even simplify it? I have it hooked up like this at the moment... PS5> usb adapter> Ground loop> (1) 3.5 jack (for chat only)> GoXLR (input) "then" GoXLR (ouput)> (1) 3.5 jack(for PC chat)> Ground loop> USB adapter> PS5. PS5 game audio via Astro Optical adapter to GoXLR. I make everything work with the routing table in the software. So my PC chat can hear and comm with PS5 chat and vice versa. Like im the switch board. Thanks in advance!

awesome stuff. I am debating between this mixer and the Mackie Creator DLZ. A note on the headphones, I broke 4 pairs in the same spot. They had a design flaw they fixed. Edit: the wireless go addition is an interesting one!

You should be aware that while the inputs of the Duo are top notch, the headphone outputs are not. People with sensitive ears and sensitive headphones will likely experience a hiss. That said, depending on your headphones it might not be noticeable to you. One option which might give better sound quality is connecting the balanced monitor output of the Duo to the schiit amp. I have never tried this, and I don't know of anyone who has made measurements, but the balanced monitor output is rumored to have much better noise performance than the headphone outputs.

Just got one after seeing so much hype online. I’m coming from a universal audio apollo x4, which had some routing issues with my setup. I gotta say that the rodecaster is handy but it’s NOT this all premium audio device people paint it to be. The onboard processing is ok. Surely better than nothing but doesn’t come CLOSE to UAD interfaces. And the headphone pre amp is NOT GOOD. White noise constantly. You’ll need to try some sort of attenuator for it if you want clean audio output on headphones. I’m currently debating wether I’ll keep it or return. If I do keep it Im gonna rout the audio from and to my apollo and use both interfaces. Using the rodecaster just for the connectivity and fader control.

Is there a reason why you wouldn't want to just plug any USB mic into your computer instead? I am guessing because then you would have to use software to modify the mic sounds vs. the duo? I am considering purchasing and using my SM7B which luckily this supports, but in the future that would mean I am locked into the Rode mics.

Constantly upgrading is a very bad habit that we as a species must stop doing. So many working products are unused in a drawer somewhere.

Rode has confirmed that the next firmware update will expose more channels over USB. I imagine it's just USB 1, but that'll be good for dedicating a channel to stream notifications, or monitoring audio via a capture card for consoles, etc. As well as dedicating inputs to IO from the mixer. Would be cool if we got one more for USB 2 so you could have a dedicated channel for game chat. But at the same time there's really not enough faders for everything. Hopefully they add a few more digital faders. Either way will be most versatile with the larger Pro model with 6 physical faders. Great mixers!
@ninbura

Here's to hoping the update after that is audio over network. I know a few people that have a gaming PC, a stream PC, and a work laptop. Would be a perfect way for those users to implement their laptop without putting USB 2 on a switch. If they implement this, and what I mentioned in the parent comment. These mixers will be almost perfect.

@@ninbura That's how I'm using it. Main goes to my gaming PC, and USB2 to my work laptop. It replaced a dual interface with an XLR spliter setup I had using an io24 to the PC and a GoXLR Mini to the laptop. Would love a few more virtual channels, but it's been really nice to have consistent, really easy to manage sound to both devices.
@cbdemented

I don't use a fader for my mic, as once I gain stage it, I basically leave it alone. I've found the 4 faders to be sufficient as a result. They also have virtual faders which you can quickly click on the touch screen to activate and then use the main knob to adjust. Shouldn't be an issue really.
@ninbura
@ninbura 7 ай бұрын
@@cbdemented I've wanted to put my mic on a digital fader as well, but I find the mute function much too slow at that point. I wish we could use the smart pads to mute channels if desired, I'd put my mic on a virtual channel, and dedicated a pad to muting it. Right now there's enough faders, I was saying once there's more virtual channels and networked audio things would get tight. 1. usb 1 capture PC 2. usb 1 capture PC chat 3. usb 2 game pc 4. bluetooth 5. smart pads 6. mic After the USB update you should have 2-3 more USB channels on USB 1. If you wanted to dedicate one to stream notifications, Spotify, & let's say capture card audio monitoring for consoles; you wouldn't have enough sliders. If they added networked audio for routing a 3rd PC in as well, you'd be SOL unless you choose that source as the final slider specifically. Where-as with the Pro you could fit 2 more sources. Like doing a stereo pair on the last two mic inputs for use with an HDMI audio extractor, and dedicating the final slider to the 3rd networked PC. Could be workable. I'm hoping that they just give both mixers a few mor digital faders when these updates drop. For me, the additional USB channels are more interesting for routing more from the mixer back into the PC as opposed to the opposite.
