Well Ollie, now its time to travel to Hawaii and give Mauna Kea (from Hilo) a try. 68 km of pure climbing. I have done it, its not the gradients - its the length, the many hours of climbing and the altitude going from 0 meters above sea level to 4200 meters. Lets go!

Well done, Ollie! I'm one of the "lucky" Strava riders that has completed this devastating climb. I did it in Aug 2015 on a 15Kg 26" MTB with rim brakes. I have had the KOM for ~3 years, must have been the lowest speed KOM ever (a ridiculously slow pace, 3,7 km/h). The video of the full descent is on KZbin (I have not yet uploaded the ascent videos). When you have lots of climbs that long, they can't be done at Z5. You get the right gearing if you have a lot of local climbing and most can do ~5% climbs in upper z2/3 because nobody is holding z5 for +30min😅 I used to only have access to short 5% climbs. I had enough gear to clear them quickly but not enough gear to ride them if they were 5-20x as long🙃

@@gcn Gearing that's better for low speed stability and torque, lighter frame, possibly longer too, I'm not an expert, but I'm sure a custom bike made for each of them would make a world of difference. And I wouldn't have it be competitive, have each one do the climb they already did in their own videos on a new bike and maybe have the others do it on their bikes or on whatever the person who's redoing the climb was riding at the time. Not fair to give the others the best option the first time round, right?

Actually I disagree, but when I climb I do it for fun and on an mtb with leisure pace. 32tx52t with 27.5'' rear on a 2.4'' Maxxis DHR 3C maxgrip; pressures between 23 and 28psi depending on surface. To keep it leisurely, I watch the watts at 80% of my FTP. A lot of enduro trails have climbs like this in the woods on lose surfaces, at least here in Austria. Usually keep talking about bike gear with my mates during the climb, we focus more on the descends :)

Loving the genuine unscripted Ollie in this video - even if he did outbleep Stefan on the Zoncolan.

Suspension and flat handlebars are not our of the question, either. He brought a knife to a gunfight. Thanks for the entertainment, Ollie! I hope your knees are okay.

Road cyclist snobs got a stigma against using superior gear ranges because they think fine tuning gearing is more important. Fools think they're all pro athletes.

Lol spot on. Everybody talks about a bigger cassette when the answer is invariably just put a teeny tiny little chain ring on.

I believe that my '96 Single Track 930 has gearing and tires better suited to this ride than his road bike.

Try it on a mtb with a 30 tooth chainring maybe even smaller and a 50 tooth dinner plate cassette you might stand an Earthly chance then.

"Gearing and attitude"! Scenery reminds me of the Mortirolo, your struggle reminds me of my attempt at the Zoncolan. Didn't walk on either but they weren't +20%. Go back and give it another go with lower gears!

I think I'd rather take my chances on the rabid t-rex. 😅 I've got a better chance of outsmarting the sick dino versus a 0% chance of making it up that mountain on a bike! 😂 Awesome vid, Ollie and the gcn film crew. Waiting for part 2 of this, hoping Feather the legend can give it a good crack 🎉

If you want another insanely difficult climb you can complete on a road bike, with relatively normal gears, try the llanos de las animas, in the Canary Islands.

Easy solution for that! 20" sporty bike with a triple or double crankset, outer sprockets (minibike or folding. Like a very British Moulton...). Khs folding bikes or... my Atala Tender have that :P A good enough gear range (mine is 28-34... which low might compare to some 22-40 or more, on a 28" bike - but the smaller wheels add to the lightness of rotating mass to be pushed up) Schwalbe Kojak tyres - 35mm but so racy still, you'd probably do with most of the cobbled section even. From the... Western Italian Alps that's pretty much all mates :D Thank me later lol Ps. If intrigued, check the Mottarone Graziella competition and how they do it with 20" bikes, either modified or not. Cheers :)

I'd ride that road with my gravel bike in road setup(same 11-40 cassette 2x) with 48mm road tires. Have him do this route again on a endurance road bike(32-35mm gravel slicks) with gravel gearing. It be interesting to see how much more he could do with proper gearing.

Can’t wait to see the second attempt. Next time try an old rim brake climbing bike like a super six evo hi mod or a specialized tarmac SL2 with mountain bike gears. Or a cross country mountain bike. Like the new canyon lux World Cup. Then I bet you could do it! Good luck
