I took your advice on the jerk bait with a spinning rod and lighter line, I'm sold on using that technique.

When I was looking for a Megabass rod to fish a jerkbait with probably 10yrs ago, the megabass USA rep put me in touch with Randy. I was dead set on a casting rod, but took Randy’s advice and picked up an Aaron Martens F3-610DGS. I was too scared to modify the fore grip as was suggested. However, It was a excellent choice in rod that I still use to this day. It’s great for jerkbaits, spy baits and really killer for shad raps. Great advice.

Thanks so much for all the great content Randy. The way you explain things is so helpful. I have been in awe of your skill and feel for fishing ever since I saw you going under the bridge at Buggs Island years ago. The video you did on jig fishing was so detailed. I would love for you to discuss some other wintertime techniques such as blades, underspins, and scroungers.Thank you Sir!

Hope Hartwell is treating you well. I was going to say during our conversation that , this is Lake Hartwell and every day regardless is a grind here. I tell people if they can fish Hartwell, they can fish anywhere. Good luck this week Randy, I couldnt find time to go out today. You really have to think out of the box here in any situation or day I feel.

My brackish/fresh water rig is lighter than that. 6 lb test (165 yards) 30 to 40 lb 2' mono leader depending on the situation spoolef on a 716 Penn reel and a 5-ft ugly stick. Perfect balance bought two identical rods and reels. Precision made, all metal except for one of drag of The two drag washers. I have not so much even had to even replaced a Bale spring fishing five days a week for 40 years! I have landed monster fish ex: 37-in native stripers 6 lb+ brown trouts, 25 lb Snook countless large and smallmouth bass on this rig. I agree any baitcaster says they can out cast me bring it and put their money where their mouth is! Unless it's the camera that reel of yours looks like the size of a medium saltwater reel? I get it if you're fishing for money and you need the security. Your generous in sharing your knowledge and experience. I see whatever works for best for you use it! Nowadays I am primarily a fly Fisher but still carry the pen rig with me in my backpack so I'm ready for any situation! -Peace

Megabass Jerkbaits are awesome 👌 and they are very effective. Unfortunately no one can convince me that they aren't taking advantage of the average Angler with those overwhelming prices.

One thing I would mention is what type of hooks your using. If you buy a strike king jerkbait and your not one that changes your hooks, fishing that on a spinning rod medium action your gonna lose alot of fish. They come with heavier hooks then a megabass does. I change all my hooks to owners. The ones with the zowire. They're sharpest hooks there is. There small diameter light wire and penetrate easily. Those big hooks don't penetrate good enough on 8 or 10 pound test on a spinning rod. Kvd fishes big heavy hooks on his and uses a heavier action rod. I use a 6'8 medium heavy rod but it's more less medium. I use 10 pound line most of time. So my hooks work good. I'll also add if you're using fluro and you make a cast to where you can see your bait, and you start working it, notice that bait is not moving the way you picture it moving, in relation to how your working it. With a medium action rod that bait is barely moving. With braid to leader it moves little better, but what makes it move the way you think it is,is a heavier action rod. Good video

Wow, this blew my mind. Seems logical to have a spinning rod as an option for Jerkbaits, especially when the wind blows but the Whipsnake ? Its a light Extra Fast drop shot rod. I appreciate you covered it but would love to hear more about how the power and taper of that rod combine along with the action you impart that make it the dream set up for you

I love jerkbait fishing and have considered purchasing the Orochi XX Ronin. I'm curious as to why you prefer the Whipsnake over the Ronin which is a bit shorter, shorter butt length, and softer action according to the specs?
@mayze094 жыл бұрын
great stuff Randy, quick question.... is there a time / scenario where you use braid to fluoro leader on your spinning set up when fishing a jerkbait? I imagine you lose a little line stretch and have a higher risk of pulling the bait away from the fish, but would that possibly increase casting distance and as a result increase the amount of time the bait is in the prime strike zone AND would that possibly create a scenario where the action of the jerkbait more accurately matches rod snaps? (hopefully I worded that clear enough)
@randyblaukatintuitive4 жыл бұрын

If you use light braid like 6 or 8lb you will outcast all fluoro by probably 20% as well.

A fishing rod blank doesn't know if it's supposed to be a spinning rod or a casting rod. Medium is the power, not the action. Maybe you mean medium in the sense that the tip section has a slow, or medium slow action? Also, casting a jerkbait weighing between a quarter ounce and 3/4 oz on a spinning rod equates to longer casts is debatable.
