@@KenMF23 I have counseled/suggested/bullied/pushed/pestered 4 friends into Toyota Hybrids and each one is very grateful I did. I think the new Sienna is amazing with its capable performance, AWD traction, good tow rating and OUTSTANDING mpg. BTW two years ago in the Alex on Autos Comment section, I predicted the next Sienna would be all Hybrid and, for once, I was right!

Thanks. so simple and so important. I have a gen 3 Prius and went to Toyota and bought a filter for the battery fan vent. It is NOT stock with the cars. There is a vent grill but NO filter. When I ordered it (they didn’t have any ). But I made them look it up and “oh yes, there is one and it’s $14.95 (if I remember correctly). And after 10 second installation job, I am now protecting my 2011 Prius fan system. So simple, so cheap. And the dealers don’t even know about them. THANKS.

It is rather disturbing that we are not hearing about the importance of cleaning hybrid battery filters from other sources. I never knew until you told us about them. When I looked at the one in our 2014 Prius I thought, "good - the filter does not have much dirt on the fiber mat." When I watched your video I understood there is no fiber mat - it was a mat of dog hair! You also gave us the number of the external filter that is a snap to clean.

If I lived in hot and sometimes dusty Las Vegus or Phoenix I would set my iPhone calinder to remind me to vacuum both Sienna battery filters at three month intervals and replace them yearly.. particulary if I hauled a dog/s around in the car, . I'd go to the Parts Department at a Toyota Dealer and buy 20 of those critical air filters. I would also buy four or five extra cabin filters to be vacuumed and swapped out yearly as the hybrid battery cooling is dependent on the cars air conditioning efficiency. Might as well get some extra engine air filters and swap it out at every other oil change. Why? Probably get 250 to 300,000 miles out that very nice Toyota. Alternative: Take it to the Dealer

Thank you so much for this helpful maintenance tip! I just bought the exact same van two weeks ago! Absolutely love it and I’m getting 43 miles per gallon! And this is not my first Toyota hybrid! Also would you recommend having the first oil change at 5000 miles instead of 10,000 miles? I had a 2020 RAV4 hybrid that I traded in for this van and I did insist that the oil be changed at 5000 miles, and the dealer said well it doesn’t need to be done at 5000 miles but I believe that oil and oil filters are cheap maintenance!

You are like Scotty Kilmer but your own version of everything Toyota. I am big Toyota fan for reliability and DIY stuff. You save me many money and headache when most things can be wrench by myself. Appreciate this. We are looking at a newer Toyota Sienna but after seeing the monthly payments even with a good down payment, we have to skip for now until maybe next year. We can buy it but not with the crazy monthly payments even with 8k down. Hmm. The leasing seem like a buy for us and take over the car after the lease is over with the lease buyout. Tempting because we are sitting on a 2009 Sienna with the fuel cost, crazy in this van. 17/25 for fuel is enough to take the dive in leasing the van and go with the buyout once the lease is over. What you guys think? Paying 700-800 monthly or lease with 400-500. We can afford both but the monthly of $700-$800 will burden us and have us live frugally. Lol.
@TheCarCareNut
@TheCarCareNut 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! I am not an expert on money advise but this is the advise I hear. If your ultimate plan is to keep the car long, buying it is wise. If you plan to turn in the lease and get a new car every 3 years so you won’t have to deal with any repairs ever and budget everything around a 400-500 monthly payment then lease. You can lease then buy the lease to lower your payments but in the end when all is said and done you actually paid more for the car and you’ll have payments for up to 9 years ( 3 years lease + up to 6 year financed)
@DSPNWtoCali
@DSPNWtoCali 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheCarCareNut wow, I been looking and looking with alot of research. No one mentioned another 6 years to finance the vehicle if lease buyout. Hmm. Thumbs up, great video, very insightful. You have now thoroughly convinced me that these hybrids are not yet ready for the mass market. A lot of customers can't even handle changing their windshield wiper blades, much less change a custom air filter under the seat. Hi I just got a new 2021 LE AWD Sienna about two weeks ago, I had a little accident when I put 5 jugs of water( from a well)on the back of the car(with third row seats down) then I hit the brake hard on the way home, and one of the jugs of water(5 gallon jug) came tumbling down, hit the wall of the car, the cap broke and water spilled on the back seat, I quickly made a stop to an apartment complex, lo and behold, half of the water already spilled( good thing I had a tarp to cover the floor) but water made its way to the carpet. The carpet is soaking wet from the back to the middle seat. I took it right away to toyota dealership, I parked it on a hill in the back of the dealership(I work there as a lube tech). Technician told me as long as there's no warning lights on the dash, then it should be fine and recommended that I should get the water extracted and dried up. An hour later, the detail guys showed up and I asked them to extract the water from my carpet in my sienna. So we walked over to the sienna and saw water dripping from the front of the car because it was parked nose down on a hill. Front driver seat carpet was wet.. I hope water didn't get to the hybrid battery in the front seats. Anyway the detail guys sucked the water out, and let the heater on in the Sienna..and it's now dry..I drove it home and no warning lights. My question is, should I still get the hybrid battery checked?

Hi brother. The brakes are ok from my experience. The van is not super fast where you’ll need heavy braking. I don’t have complains on the brakes. The engine noise is true but also true for many hybrids. They rev up and hold like a CVT transmission car. More so on the sienna since it’s big and heavy. I would test drive one and see how you feel about the engine noise level

HI AMD, very helpful video - I scanned the comments and did not see a discussion on where the exhaust air from the traction battery is vented? I have noticed at times on my 2021 Sienna that some extra heat seems to be coming into the front footwell area, I have reached down and felt the intake grills and can notice air being drawn in so the fans must be fairly active and exhausting somewhere. Thanks in advance for your reply.

Hi! The battery exhausts outside the car. In between the sheet metal of the body externally. Not something that is easily accessible

Thank you! Very helpful! Is there anything we should know about the battery in cold weather? I live in a place were we get both very hot and very cold and we don't have a garrage.

Hi! In hot weather use the AC and keep the fan filter clean if equipped. In cold weather avoid leaving the car outside for a very long time like a month or more without driving at all

When it comes to cleaning the filter itself, is it only to blow it with air, or it can be wet cleaned too?

I was just checking a used 2021 Sienna LE for sale at the dealer. I asked if it would be okay to see the battery filter and they looked at me like I'd come from Mars. I don't know etiquette about removing panels and screws when test driving... they DID agree to show me but they brought it into the service bay and asked a tech for help. Visually, on the outside, it looked okay. He popped it open and it was pretty dusty inside, the vent inside looked more brown. The tech watched me wipe my finger in the vent and said, "...yeah, get them to change those filters..." I wonder how they clean those vents and fans if the filter fails like that?

Hey! Thanks for the video. I was able to follow your instructions and take out the passenger side filter and clean it. However I am having difficulties on the driver side. I am holding the outside and turning the inside screw but it is not coming out, it just keeps spinning. Any suggestions by chance?

Another great video, thanks so much! Quick question for you... (2021 Sienna Hybrid AWD) I'm getting a minor squeaking/tapping noise coming from the dash up near the driver side windshield. I hear more of a squeak when going over a bump or when the van weight shifts from back to front on a hard brake, and more of a tapping/clicking noise when making tight turns at low speeds. Any idea what that might be?

I recently bought a 2022 hybrid Sienna. The 12v battery has died 3 times in the last 6 months, usually it happens after letting it sit for a couple of weeks without being driven. Can I hook up a battery maintainer/trickle charger to the jumper terminals under the hood? Or, do I need to hook it up directly to the 12v battery in the rear of the van? Thanks. I have found your other videos to be quite helpful.

What's a general rule of thumb for the filter replacement? Every 10k? 20k? 30k? Just so I can easily keep track of it. Thanks!

Is it ok to use 0w-20 for new Toyota engines if I was living in a hot region We're talking average temperature of about 27C-32C ( 80.6F-89.6F ) throughout the year and can reach up to 44C ( 111.2F ) in summer

Always follow manufacturer recommendations even when living in hot climate. New Toyota engines extremely complex and designed for certain type of oil. My new RAV4 says 0W16 but can use 0W20 once if followed next oil change by 0W16 against.
@marcofreitas5321

Here where I live they do the same. If you say them that you want them to put the oil that states in the owner's manual, they charge you an extra money for that. I guess these dealerships are just too cheap and don't care for what Toyota really recommend for their cars. And I'm talking about oficial Toyota dealership service. Lots of people I've talked to told the same. Most people don't know this and cars get serviced without people knowing what oil grade they're using on the official oil change.

Yes, the 2021 owners manuals of Toyotas sold in tropical latitude countries say oils as thick as 5W-30 and 10W-30 can be used even if the factory fill oil was 0W-16 or 0W-20. Only the USA manuals say the factory fill 0W-16 or 0W-20 viscosities MUST be used for the life of the vehicle. USA manuals say MUST for a government compliance reason: the EPA fuel economy ratings for Toyotas sold and operated in the USA were obtained using the extra thin factory fill 0W-16 and 0W-20 oils.
