After playing with a ton of mechanical keyboards from several brands, I feel that membrane keyboards are just good enough for when you’re selling a pc to someone and need a kb to get them started.

Another popular and cheap mouse and keyboard combo is the Cooler Master Devastator 3 keyboard and mouse combo. Can be had for $40 Canadian. Probably a pretty good option to put head to head against this Red Dragon option.

Look into the Royal Kludge line. I needed a cheap mechanical RGB (I just wanted a backlight) keyboard for work that still had a 10-key so I picked up their Rk918. You can get them for under $50

I have the Redragon KARURA 2 (model no. K-502rgb). I like it. It's quiet, semi-water proof and the lettering is very large and in a standard font. Also there is NO Under-Key light spillage. What I mean is, the light emits THROUGH THE KEY ONLY. There is no light emitted AROUND the keys illuminating everything. The wrist rest is at least 3" wide & it's only $25 bucks.

Uhm. Defective Keycaps on these Redragon S101. I bought the 2024 wireless version the S101-PKS. Bought 2 from Amazon on Jan. 2, 2025 and wanted to return to Amazon on Jan 8, 2025. Found out they were not a Returnable and Refundable product which was not mentioned when I ordered/purchased them. I did Amazon Online Chat and was told to keep the crappy keyboards and I was given a $95 Gift card credit to my account.

Gk61 and sk61 are often under 50 bucks. The yellow switch variants aren't as easy to find anymore at that price point, but the other switches are very easy to find and work great. I personally bought mine for 48, with the yellow switches. Not from Amazon tho.

I've recently posted about the first keyboard I bought for the first computer I built for my personal use way way back. It was a membrane keyboard because that's what most everyone bought back then. We had just been weened of the buckling spring keyboards and words like "soft touch", "quiet" and "membrane" was selling new keyboards in droves. I'd worked a lot with IBM buckling spring keyboards and those were not quite as bullet proof as people tend to claim. Sure they were built like tanks, but they were heavy, loud and occasionally one of the flappers would jump out of their hinge. Then you had to remove something like thirty screws to take it apart and place the that little piece of steel back in place. So many screws... At the time these were cheap as they were thrown away as scrap. Membrane keyboards were the new shiny. There were even high end membrane keyboards with individually weighted switches and all kind of features such as static discharge through the space bar and so on. The individually weighted switches were actually pretty nice. The keys under your dominant hand was slightly heavier and the ones that you typed on using the pinky were the heaviest of them all. Then they tapered off the further out from the center you got so keys like backspace, enter, shift, control, tab and so on were the lightest. I'm sure there are such keyboards made still today, but I haven't seen much marketing of features like those for a long time... Back to the cheap one I bought. I think it was made by, or at least sold as, Mitsumi. And compared to other cheap keyboards it was another tank. I never really had a problem with the feel of membrane keyboards, but I did run into ghosting problems as well as lack of N-Key rollover. Still I used it for more than ten years and I still have it laying about somewhere, I think, if it didn't got thrown away the last time I moved. As for feel I really miss those old buckling spring keyboards. None of the modern clicky key switches I've tested really lives up to the buckling spring keyboards, but they are a decent alternative. And yes I like that click. Actually it's the click more than the feel that's lacking if I'm perfectly honest. One funny thing was that for a long time every keyboard bios had a option to generate a click using the MB speaker whenever you pressed a key, just so you could simulate having a clicky keyboard. There were also options for how fast the keyboard would repeat and how long the delay would be before it started to repeat. It's funny that I never noticed when those disappeared. Now we come to the review. I think most of it was relevant, but the rigidity test? Really? Who twists their keyboard like that other than to test if they can twist it? And what does it prove? Sure most cheap keyboards are probably not the most solid constructions, but then doe they really have to be? It's not like most of us use the keyboards on an uneven surface or our lap or something. It's pretty safe to assume that most of use has a desk or at least a reasonably flat rock to rest our less expensive keyboard on. After all we're most likely using a mouse that is another thing that works best on something reasonably flat. Now if the keyboard flexes when you type then it's a valid complaint, same if it groans when you get a bit heavy handed in a game. But other than that do you really care how easy or hard the keyboard is to twist? More important for a keyboard is that it doesn't have ghosting problems as those can make gaming a very bad experience. As for N-Key rollover it's nice to have, but the basic 6-Key rollover of USB is probably enough for most gamers. Just don't tell them that as it shows just what a noob you are. But to be honest most action games on PC are played with one hand on the mouse and the other on the keyboard. Now try to find a situation when you need to press more than six keys on the same time, and then do it with one hand... I'm not saying that there aren't games where you might need to press six keys at the same time, but at the moment I can't really think of one, and they aren't very common. I know I wrote that I had run into the problems due to lack of N-Key rollover, but to be honest I think it was actually a ghosting problem. The game was Earthworm Jim, a platformer, and there was a place where you had to perform a pretty weird maneuver. As it was a platformer you used both hands on the keyboards and I remember failing at this section time and time again before finally figuring out that the keyboard simply couldn't support all the keys needed at the same time, so no matter ho much I tried it was actually impossible with that keyboard. So that's why I say that anti ghosting is something you really need as a gamer, and N-Key rollover is something that's nice, but probably not critical for most. But once you run into the wall because it isn't there you might curse me for saying that. If so then feel free to ridicule me for stating this opinion.

Excellent review! I never really thought about the flatness of the rows of keys. Huh. I'll keep that in mind. One other thing you did not mention is the bottom row (ctrl, alt, windows, spacebar,...) and how the bottom of each of those keys curve toward the wrist rest. Most keyboards have these keys cupped like the other rows above them. Older Dell membrane also have curved keys like this for that bottom row. I've become accustom to that curve down and cupped keys on the bottom row hurt my fingers when I press them in certain combinations. I guess it's just my style of typing. Cheers.

Great review! One thing that got me, was the sound test at +20db. Do you plan to do that for all testing? If so, mechanical keyboards are going to sound super loud with +20db. I thought the point of a sound test was to have a standard from X distance away at normal levels? That's one thing membrane have going for them, they're quite a bit more quiet than mechanical, but adding that db kinda makes it sound like a mechanical. If you don't plan adding db to mechanical keyboards, why not just say that you have to turn your volume up to hear it at X away from the mic as the membrane is super quiet? No need to confuse people about the level of sound coming from the keyboard, even if you say it's a +20db added. What if people don't watch the entire video and miss that part, but then only focus on the fact it sounded like a mechanical keyboard, despite you mentioning that's what it had going for it from the start? =)

Well now I have dropped a pint of beer onto my Corsair k95 I am in between keyboards which has made me reflect on keyboards I have known. They have been something i have changed regularly mostly because once its dirty I can never be assed to clean them up. The very best keyboard I ever had, including my K95, was a cheap model by iTrust which came with a mouse. It worked perfectly for several years and when finally it gave out, full of pork scratching dust I think, I was gutted. I have never had a keyboard that felt so natural, responsive and that was top-notch at both gaming and typing. I do like corsair I just find them expensive and crappy to type on plus the icue software is dog.

Can you please review the Logitech G600 and other moba mice ? Especially for productivity I find them very usefull, and with it maybe more people can benefit from not switching their right hand between the keyboard and the mouse all the time. Personally I can not believe how usefull it can be to have the most basic key operations right on the mouse, like Alt+Tab, Ctrl+Tab, Esc, PgDn, Ctrl+PgDn ...

Not allot of features but like Volvos they are boxy but good. Unfortunately between the young gamers and hardware buy ups from the human malware the prices went up, but considering that the prices aren't rediculous. I've been using computers since 1978 or 79, which is 44 years give or take, and of all keyboards available, I highly recommend the Red Dragon S-101-3, as you get the most bang for your buck! LOL Note: I bought the Red Dragon Keyboard because my cats love to chew up the cable from the keyboard to the computer. So, I bought 4 of them, of course with the mouse.
