When we cruised the Avon in 2007 we were sooo fortunate that both the Evesham and the Tewkesbury locks were manned. They are enormous !!! Well done both of you . Many memories for us on you trip

They weren't manned at this time because of covid, but someone did come out and 'watch' the manoeuvre but when we didn't hit anything he left again. lol

As a complete novice, I took a hire boat on the Avon about 40 years ago with 2 ten-year-olds. It was terrific but I do remember being very red - faced at Evesham lock after a hefty bang into the wall. Reassuring to know that experienced hands consider it tricky. Of course, Kath handled it beautifully.

Another lovely video of cruising down the Avon! Evesham lock was where I use to be relief lock keeper, and Reach Master, back in the 80s, when it was a toll lock, between the upper and lower Avon Trusts. It's all one now though. Not wanting to be too pedantic, but all the paddles on the Avon are mechanical, there aren't any hydraulic ones, there just very different mechanisms, thanks to Dave Huchings who restored the Upper Avon, (and the Southern Stratford Canal!)
@TheNarrowboatExperience4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info, I realised after the edit about the paddles, but it's good that you pointed it out.

Last time we went up the Avon, at Evesham lock (built above a disused lock and on legs) there was a group of people clearing it out because it had been flooded in the floods that year! I just couldn't picture how the water level had got that high, we were lucky that the river was passable and a lot more lucky that the people who had lost caravans and boats etc. to the floods. Nice vlog, bringing back happy memories!

3 weeks tomorrow we moored up at Offenham in the eye of a thunderstorm, the rain lashing so hard I could barely distinguish the sharp right turn into the lock from the weir straight ahead. Not to mention the danger of being struck by lightning on the stern deck. Just to make our day, the inviting-looking Fish & Anchor pub on the left before the lock, was less than 50 yards from our mooring spot - but turned out to be a 5 mile walk away... strange to see it all looking so serene for you...
@TheNarrowboatExperience4 жыл бұрын
Oh yes, we heard the pub was quite far from the mooring- so it has it's own patron mooring, which you have to book. Wow, can't imagine that turn in a thunderstorm. Glad you are ok.

Where you moored in Evesham is where the Giant Whale Bone was displayed in the park, between the river and Waterside. Spent many happy times in Evesham in my youth. My late Aunt and Uncle had a farm just outside and you would have passed their land as it bordered the river between Harvington and Offenham. How lucky were we to spend our summers there.

So glad you enjoyed our lovely Avon.. Offenham lock is only a few moments from our house and I also love to walk my dog along the bank at Bidford. I've lived less than a mile away from the river for my whole life. 64 years!!!! I could tell you many stories 😍 Sorry I didn't get to meet you ladies. My top tip for a really brave adventure from the Avon is a quick nip to Gloucester on the Severn ( you can do it - you got skills now 😉 ) Then down the Sharpness Canal through Gloucestershire for a peek at the Severn Estuary at Sharpness . One of my favourite trips. Did it every year for a while. Pa in law got us back up the Severn in full flood on a 26ft Norman Cabin Cruiser. Eek!

It's pretty much good practice anywhere with a current to get a bow line (going upstream / against current) or stern line (going downstream / with the current) on first. Generally that prevents the current catching the boat and causes it to mostly push the other end towards the shore. The center line is convenient in the locks, but may be better avoided entirely in currents. A single line from the upstream end of the boat is the one most likely to be critical to avoid being swept broadside to the flow. Obviously, don't forget wind with that as well. A strong wind and light current can easily change that priority.
