My uncle lives in Wyre (wire) Piddle. I fact, he has a mooring at the bottom of his garden but not big enough for a narrowboat. Assuming you go up the Severn, I was born in Upton. Mike.

The history of Wyre Piddle, is thought to have evolved from Piddle Brook, Piddle referring to a small stream, and the former Celtic name for the brook being Wyre. There is a Brewery about 1.6 km from the brook, with such fascinating brews as: Piddle in the hole, Piddle in the wind, Piddle in the dark, and my favorite, Piddle in the snow ! I jest NOT ! (Wiki) Loving this Vlog ! Keep safe, 2 m distance, as you have a piddle ! xx

Wyre Piddle - Famous for a beer "Piddle In The Hole"! Well, maybe not famous, but someone I ran into at Burning Man years ago had some they'd brought in their luggage. I wonder if they're still making it? I don't drink beer, so I wouldn't know even if it was served worldwide *grin* Another fun video, and yes, I'd not want to use the diamond lock singlehanded either. Hope the weather turned out to be good for the remainder of the trip without too much wind, and you had some nice moorings to ride it out (and some good places for the cats to safely explore). Thanks as always for the efforts in making the video and sharing your days with us!

As a canoeist during my youth, although I had a BWB license we were banned from locks (we had to portage around them and we played on the weirs. Narrowboaters can use the locks but weirs would destroy your boat. And yes.... of course I've taken my kayak through locks when no-one was looking LOL We would grab a rung of the access ladder and then move up or down the rungs as the depth changed. But I would never share a lock with a narrowboat! There's a slim chance that something untoward might happen crushing my boat and me! Stay safe girls.

One of the things that I, as an American, enjoy about the narrowboating channels is all the British place-names. Wyre Piddle is probably the most fun of those I've heard (so far) but Yardley Gobion? Preston Bagot? Such fun!

The diamond lock must use more water, but I suppose that's not as much of a concern on a river as it would be on a canal. I was reading about water gates recently. Fascinating. I'd love to see one in use, but I don't think there are any left.

Maybe it is different in USA, but we refer to the rear as the stern or the aft and the front as the bow or for'ard. Not trying to be a pain, but is it different in the UK? Right side is starboard and left is port, upstairs is topside and down stairs is below. Love you guys and meow-babies too.💖💕
@reecefowell4 жыл бұрын
According to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aft > , in naval terminology, is an adjective or adverb meaning, , when the frame of reference is within the ship, headed at the fore And according to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stern > The is the back or aft-most part of a ship or boat In short, no. They have different meanings. It is not stated as a dialect thing on the Wikipedia, you were just misinformed by whoever gave you that information.

Wyre Piddle has to be the most interesting name in Britain as it retains both the Anglo Saxon name (piddle in Anglo Saxon meant a little stream, which is why it later got attached to a stream of urine) but the most fascinating thing is that the old Celtic name for the stream (wyre) was retained and survived the centuries as a joined name from two languages. There can’t be too many more examples of this kind to two language name.

That diamond shaped lock is a lot trickier on the way up. If you’re not tied up well, the water coming in will crash you into the sides, back and forth. On another note, we also moored under the trees in the park in Pershore - we stayed overnight. We found out that they were chestnut trees, and the nuts kept falling on the metal roof all night! We didn’t get a lot of sleep!
@paulroberts56774 жыл бұрын
I think you stayed. A bit open for the cats, but after shopping and having lunch, Tewksbury is just too far. Tewksbury has a brill fish and chip shop. When I had the Porsche' I would open the roof, call at my wife's care home, they would lift her out of her wheelchair, drop her through the open roof and off we'd go to Tewksbury for fish and chips by the river. It was cool. Nobody knew she was disabled, just another lady in a Porsche' eating fish and chips 😁

Hi. I used to live in Worcester and work in Pershore. I remember going to Wyre Piddle with a gang of people from work one night. We went to a pub and I'm sure it wasn't the one in your video. But the highlight for them was in the car seeing my face when they asked me what town we were entering! By the way the locals called it "Wire" as in electrical wire. That was in 1985 so a lot could have changed since then and i think I recall that there were three of them, Upper Piddle?? and another. ALL the best. Ps. You stayed?
