good advice, one thing to remember though is to always blow your saw with the filter in place so you do not fill up your intake with the very same dust we are trying to keep out

If the user has access to water, running the concrete saw with water hooked up will really help with keeping the dust down. Ideally having 2 or 3 air filters and cleaning and changing them daily during heavy use is the best. I have heard of brand new concrete saws being "dusted down" and ruined in less than a month. These saws cost $1200 in U.S.

The only problem with running the water is that it stains everything but you can maybe cut somewhere that doesn’t matter if it’s stained like dirt or something

Husqvarna recommends not replacing air filter until loss of power blowing it out can make air filter pores bigger and let more stuff through, just what I was told I still throw a new filter on every chance I get though lol

As a Forman of a crew running these on pavers all the time my rule was roughly 8hours of run time change the filter. These saws are the life blood of most interlock jobs so you need them running well. Good video but also what I’ve noticed myself is the older carb, primer and choke style saws perform 100x better than the new fuel injected saws when it comes to cutting stone without water.

Con saws live a very tough life. Most of the time people dont let them warm up either. As soon as it starts itll get full throttle. Amazing that they last as long as they do tbh

I just finished putting an entire new Chinese engine in the same saw that a concrete finisher had completely destroyed. This is probably the most complex machine I have ever rebuilt, complete with a decompression valve. Just got I running and a new air filter arrives today.

Hi Don and other commentators. From first hand I know that the filtration system of the STIHL cut-off machines is engineered for tough conditions and low maintenance. Low maintenance meaning that the air filter needs to be changed only when the cutting performance is reduced. It is actually not good to change the filter too often, even if that makes sense at first and is normal practice in f.e. chainsaws. The carb also (as in lots of other STIHL machines) has a compensator which keeps engine performance and fuel/air-ratio constant even when the air filter gets more and more clogged.

Use water when cutting. A clogged air filter will run rich and ultimately cost you more than the time to clean it.

I carry a gas powered air compressor and after cutting I blow all filter engine creaves until no more dust end of the day new filter long distance change maybe twice

In your opinion, do you think having the water line hooked up and used consistently every time totally mitigate that dust problem? Or just partially? I'm not a mason, but I couldn't help myself when our mason subcontractor threw 3 Stihl and 1 Hilti concrete saws into our dumpster. I sold the Hilti as is, and I'm getting 120 and 130 psi from 2 of the Stihls, but I'm still wondering if I should just totally rebuild at least one of them...

You shouldn’t blow out a paper filter, it can expand the openings and allow bigger/more particles through the element. I always just threw a new one in, for what they’re worth it’s cheap insurance.

Yes. We have nose hair. Unfortunately we can't replace lungs that easily and like concrete cut off saws, we die. You're so right though when you see people using this kind of stuff, squinting their eyes and holding their breath.

Anything with a motor that draws in concrete dust is going to be worse off until it causes self destruction prematurely. Most cordless tools I'm aware of, have motors that pull air through themselves for cooling. It may not happen as fast but keeping this grit off any moving mechanisms (besides a cutting blade/disc/etc, obviously) is worthwhile.

Man we usto use these cut off saws like Thay were disposable lol . Time is money The tools are cheap compared to the time paying 10 union guys weighing around for something to be cut . The cost of all the new tools was just included as a part of the final bid .lots of guys would score tools when it came to the end of the jobs

You do not need to replace the filter EVERY week!?! If you run a TS410 you need to get yourself a good old fashioned compressor with an air gun. Not only to blow out the filter (tap as much out first) but also to blow out those air inlets to the left hand side of the housing. Clean filters won't help if your machine can't breath. It's a crappy design, buy a husqvarna instead (once your upper right spring mount breaks off)

Maybe but consider a situation where the user isn't the tool owner and doesn't want to bother or isn't aware of how important this is. Many people will just continue using a tool until it stops running.

Concrete dust is a recognized cancer causing agent due to the silica being ground into a flour consistency as well as other mineral compounds in the aggregate and the CEMENT POWDER in the concrete. The dust is very corrosive (pH of 12 to 13). On big grinding jobs the slurry must be captured and properly disposed of because it would kill everything it touches on the ground. Look at an old bricklayers hands the skin is eroded back on the hands. As others noted the use of water to protect the OPERATOR is a given as well as the equipment. I cringe ever time I drive by a job and see a worker using a concrete saw with dust floating all around him and onto others. A useful experiment would be to weigh a filter before and after a big cut job. These are basic health and safety regulations in every province. Good topic for your viewers. Look up the illness called silicosis to check it out.
