This is the Only Intel i7 940 I Ever Tried - 5.2GHz Overclock on LN2

Intel Core i7 940 was definitely one of the more rare Bloomfield CPU models for the X58 platform, as it kinda fell in between the Core i7 930 and 950. It is based on the older C0/C1 stepping of the Bloomfield architecture, so expect much lower frequencies compared to the newer D0 stepping models. Some of C1 stepping CPUs can actually overclock surprisingly well at least on water cooling.
The target was relatively low on LN2, only like 4.9-5.1GHz, and this CPU was better than what I expected. 5.2GHz validation and all of the important top scores in those benchmarks that were popular back in the day. I could improve my Super PI 32M result for sure, but even this result I just got is already pretty interesting.
From here, the quest for even better Core i7 950 and 980X CPUs continues and for the remaining X58 CPU Core i7 models I haven't really pushed to the max yet.

miss the x58 platform,had a gigabtye ud9 ,got 4.7 with a 970 and 4.9 with a 990 on water

Ha, I still have a system with an intel i7-950 and another with an i7 -920 the last one, was the best CPU from the whole range. The 950 was placed in a High-end motherboard from MSI the Big Bang-XPower, the other is placed in a ASUS P6TWS Pro workstation board. And it still runs now 24/24/7/365. Each year it's getting maintenance, mostly fans that have gone dry. I have 8 PC's running here, they all get the same treatment. That way you can run years your computers, and I have a stack of reserves to switch fast, if one fails. To be honest, I failed to overclock the 950, if I only touch, in the BIOS a change, a blue screen is the result, which I have to reset the BIOS to an earlier state.

I7 940 at 4.7 GHz should be roughly equivalent in cinebench R20 to 4 modern E cores in a laptop 13900HX at 3.9 GHz.

I love watching your Bloomfield CPU XOC. Just curious about something tho, I own a i7 960 that i got with an Asus R2E recently from a local resale website, why is there no talk about the 960? I got a great deal on this thing it also came with a dual AMD GPU that I havent been able to get running yet but everything else works just fine. Im now on a hunt for some of the best DDR3 ever made if even possible anymore. O also while i have your attention what are your thoughts on the R2E as apposed to the R1E and R3E? all of those boards run these CPUs correct? is it a RAM sspeed thing? thanks for your vids Luumi. R1E aka Rampage Extreme is a LGA775 board that’s generally regarded to be the top pick for overall performance on the platform. R2E is pretty good, VRM is a little weak, does good BCLK. R3E is good but can be bad, vrm good, bclk pretty good but iirc R2E is better
