I cut off my narcissist Dad a couple years ago, i was 34 years old when i did, and i got totally sober since i cut him off and my life has been going sooo much better since. He really controlled me with his Raingutter business and religion, it was a nightmare to get away from it. The only problem i am having now though, is the guilt, and ptsd nightmares about him. I keep wanting to call him just to make myself feel better, but i dont want to give him any chance to ruin my life again and what i worked so hard for, i think its best for me to just not talk to him. He's the reason i was homeless for years, and drank for years, and i was so unstable under his control. I am just stressed with the guilt the longer i stay away from him, if i am making any sense 🙈 thank you for all of your videos and advice I'm so glad i found you and Doctor Romani! ❤☺️

Build a life so good that you seldom think about what you dealt with under your dad. Have a life of your own. Over time, the guilt will fade. My 82 year old grandfather, who leads with his assets and pocketbook to manipulate and control family members, left me with no other option but to gray rock him. He mentioned to me a medical problem he was having. I told him he needs to speak with his doctor to address his concerns and to press his doctor until they get answers. Then, I offered to transport him to and from doctors' appointments, and he could let me know when they are. He was trying to use his health as a guilt trip to soften my attitude about the actions that caused me to reduce his role in my life. My only issue is how I will be perceived for having to mostly remove him from my life.

That's tough, I sometimes go through the same thing. It's a disregulated nervous system from years of trauma. If you can see someone, they may recommend certain therapies to you like dialectical behavioral therapy which is something that is very helpful for disassociation and will help ground you, keeping you in the moment. 😊 The process of disassociation actually has an opioid connected to it that your own body makes, to dull the pain of the trauma. Also, due to the unpredictability of the trauma it can be addictive. It's hard to get away from. The whole field of psychology is quite fascinating and they're learning new interactions between psychology and neurology all the time. Be well.

I’m so proud of you and it’s obvious you did the right thing. I know it’s hard but just take it 1 moment at a time when you feel the urge to contact him. If you must you must. I would agree with the Doctors, he’ll just hurt you and likely gaslight you. Your dad didn’t make you the best you can be, you did. 🥰 Also, when you feel like calling him. Call yourself (mentally) first.

I’m so glad I found you. I’m a senior and I have to deal with a narcissist whether I want to or not. And sick as it is, I want to keep a line of communication open with my son. I tried complete separation for a couple of years, as suggested by many, but it was literally perpetual mourning! Now that I’ve learned skills to deal with him, I’m starting with baby steps. It’ll never be the same relationship I have with my other children, but it’s everything to me. Am I wrong to be doing this?

No. This is your child... I suppose it depends on the severity of the abuse ?my mother clung until she was going through chemo and my narcissist brother laughed at her. She was done. She told him to leave at Hospice, on her death bed at 54 she told me "go live your life don't worry about him.. Prior to her getting very sick, I found a book that she had scribbled notes in... She referred to my brother as an energy vampire, another scribble said protect Hayley (my name)... I've been no contact for almost 11 years thank God. Zero. Zilch. Don't care.

Thank you for your input. I’m treading slowly and have a great support network behind me. I’m hoping everything will work out, but I know I might end up like her in the end. I’m not delusional, but am trying my very best to keep some kind of relationship going. I haven’t suffered severe abuse, but I am not blind. I’ll be careful. Thank you ❣️
