Janine Driver is a New York Times best-selling author and award-winning keynote speaker who spent 16 years as a Special Agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Driver has trained over 60,000 lawyers, judges, and law enforcement officers on how to detect deception. Known professionally as the “Lyin' Tamer,” she now shares her people-reading skills to help corporate and law enforcement professionals better understand other’s hidden emotions unintentionally expressed through body language.

Thank you Lady! ❤ This reminds me to read You Can't Lie To Me which is among my legions of unread Kindle books. Janine I very much appreciate your work, and the truths you have uncovered, especially in the current social context. Some of the conclusions you've reached are also ones I've reached (I love the confirmation!) and others are entirely new to me and I can't wait to learn them thoroughly. I tend to be very slow to know when I am missing something (especially when I judge), so I made up a little rhyme that cues me to: reserve judgment, breathe, open my eyes, and listen carefully - to find what I have missed. If nothing else, it helps me reserve judgment: "Whenever something bothers me, There's something more that I must see." I do suspect that my instincts are smarter than me. 😊 My body seems to know what I don't, and it makes me uncomfortable when I am going down the wrong road. So that discomfort is a signal for me. I have a question. My entire mom’s side of the family from her father smiles when the trauma and pain is too much to stand. It’s weird and genetic. It’s totally uncomfortable, uncontrollable, and not a reflection of our true feelings. What about weird ppl like us? Are you always going to be seen as guilty or happy when we are not?

I’m the same, though I believe this non-standard response is more from suffering severe childhood CPTSD. I have a broad smile and laugh when nervous or distressed, though can control it up to a point. I’ve been on the end of some nasty accusations because of it, and been told that my explanations are ‘excuses’. People are not interested in being educated. I now am very selective about which social events and interactions I engage in as I get bouts of anxiety anticipating yet more misunderstandings.

The Japanese culture does that. But a smile is not a smirk. Often people don't like it but a smirk is done by a sadist/ psychopath which u r NOT and the Japanese are NOT. U r the apple; the smirk's the onion. Similar but different. Look for the nuances. I saw it IMMEDIATELY BEFORE she pointed it out with that man!!

what if someone giggles if you ask them if they cheated with specific people/scenario? (same Question was asked several times during different situations, and reaction was pretty much the same, a giggle... and one of the reactions to that question was laughing out loud. And when asked why are you laughing, he said 'because it's absurd question'.... But when he was asked about a different cheating scenario, whether they did something there, he said 'of course not', and there was no giggle.

I wonder if this changes when dealing with immigrants? I work with a lot of First Nations people, and they tend to remain emotionless and soft-spoken when experiencing tragedy. Asians typically smile when faced with something upsetting or replusive. Eatern-Europeans typically find public displays of emotion socially unacceptable and will frequently remain stoic when faced with something disturbing. Do these techniques only apply to Americans? Or are many of these reactions universal to humans?
