Framework is a company that was set up to basically do the opposite of Apple- they make laptops that are specifically designed to give you the freedom to repair, replace, upgrade, and improve your devices! They sent me their latest offering, a 12th gen intel upgrade kit for the Framework Laptop. When you look at Framework Laptop vs MacBook Pro, the comparison is certainly interesting! Right to repair, upgradability, and modularity are key to Framework; Apple, not so much. Today let's take a deep dive into the Framework and see what it offers!

I love what this company is doing as well and apparently that thought caused controversy in this comment section. However, I myself wouldn’t necessarily buy this particularly device either as I prefer to have a dedicated GPU, and as someone who likes to carry as few things as possible for a laptop, I wouldn’t really want to go with the thunderbolt eGPU approach myself.

To all of the comments who are going to say “Windows sucks” or “Apple sucks” just stop. You are missing the whole point. We want the whole industry to move forward with the ability to repair devices and that only happens if we as consumers work together to push companies to make us better machines. Stop the “us versus them” mentality. It’s childish. I respect that even though Luke is an Apple fan, he is able to acknowledge when other companies are doing things better, in this case repairability. Great video!

Why do you have a problem with free speech? I absolutely HATE the Windows operating system. HORRIBLE antiquated file management system. Bloated code. TERRIBLE. I would rather run linux on the framework than windows. I have virtual linux machines on my Macs. Work great. I have a Windows 10 machine for the one program that I need that isn't available on the Mac platform. It is horrible. I would consider putting a mackintosh on a framework laptop. When there is an arm processor for framework, I'm sure we will be able to put hacintoshes eventually on these machines.

(edit)..."We want the whole industry to move forward"... a few people want that, but most of us, the vast majority, have zero interest in laptops that you swap out pieces to make a generic enclosure update to newer tech. You go ahead and buy this. Good luck to you, as you will be getting a relatively mediocre experience not having the support of the OEM for firmware updates and possible issues with hardware and software talking as you swap stuff in and out. For most of us making a living out of our work machines, we want and need the support of the OEMs, and I would worry with a concept like this. Anyway, these days, new laptops can last 10 years plus, especially ARM-based, as smartphones have proved how reliable and long-lasting they are.

@@andyH_England You just dont understand how the ports work right? its all usb-c so its kinda dongle but within the laptop itself, its like you just bought a laptop with only usb c ports (just like apple does) but it came with a lot of dongles that doesnt poke out of the chassis. Smartphone reliable? you gotta change that piece of crap every 3 years tops cause you ran out of power or ran out of support. I got a Iphone X sitting on my shell its not even 5 years old and it's completely trash hell the webcam of my old alienware takes better photos than that. What oem support are you talking about? The way you talk about arm based processors and especially that you think about modularity as a hassel makes this comment "For most of us making a living out of our work machines" very very under likely to be truth. @andyH_England
@andyH_England Жыл бұрын
If Framework-type laptops existed, the PC industry would slowly die, with some OEMs disappearing. We would lose the variety, investment, and innovation as there would be no money in it. Remember, most laptop OEMs get the components off the shelf, and if every laptop was like Framework, then that would cut them out. Where would the support come from, the warranties, and how would software companies cater for users mixing hardware up? Thankfully, that will never happen, as Framework is a bit of a niche user case; the techies that think we should go back to the last century where everything is modular and innovation is dead as you cannot innovate modularity. We saw all the hype with modular phones, and that died quickly, as consumers as a whole did not care. I expect the same with laptops.

All I had to install was the RAM, Storage, and WiFi card ... that simple. Some things were a little sub par with really early models but they upgraded for newer ones and you have the option to purchase those upgrades and do them yourself if you choose. They're sleek, easy to work on and the chassis will last, and you can repurpose the cpu when you upgrade. It potentially will save you money in the long run.

@@shanemitchellspencer I totally get what you're saying. I believe in FW's vision and goal, and they're doing a great job of it. But I am far to deeply entrenched in the Apple Ecosystem to keep the same level of overall productivity switching away from MacOS. Also, in a vacuum, this is an amazing laptop. Light, powerful, modular ports, repairability, all awesome. But next to my 14" M1 Pro MacBook Pro, it's got awful speakers, a much lower quality trackpad, and the screen is decent, but can't compete with what Apple just did. And that's before you get into Apple Silicon efficiency. So, while the latest round of Macs are clearly superior hardware, for the times I do need to run Windows or Linux, this is a great computer for me. If I wasn't a Mac guy, this would be my primary laptop in a heartbeat. @Anonymoose_Geek For some reason, my replies to these comments keep getting deleted. Cool, that's helpful. Everything is easy to open, labeled for convenience and designed to be maintained by people who expect appliance-like performance. I didn’t have luke reviewing a framewok laptop on my bingo card. I just got my email that my framework is shipping. It’ll be my first non MacBook Pro since college at least for personal use. I feel as excited about it as I did my first 2009 MacBook Pro. I think Apple is making both the best laptop for general use and the best laptops for video professionals but then there are people like me in the developer/dev ops roles that have been on MacBooks but don’t really fit in the Apple silicon spectrum. I just blindly bought the latest MacBook Pro with the highest cpu and no dedicated gpu every few years. Now you either fit into the m? air/pro or go m? pro(non binned) for two more cpu threads at twice the price, so I started looking around and framework just seems perfect for a little tech nerd like me. Part of the reason for going mac was unixish terminal with ssh built in at a time when Linux on a daily driving professional laptop just wasn’t there. Now though it is, no more pulling binary blobs out of windows WiFi drivers and reverse engineering them. Linux just works on the framework. It sounds like intel doesn’t support the same level of sleep and so battery life isn’t as good on Linux as windows, but if they don’t get that in there before framework has a Ryzen board, then you can bail on intel. Anyway I’m rambling because I’m excited and it was really cool to see this video pop up in my feed this morning. Also the circle on the 3d print has prongs that push the power switch so that’s the power button. Between this laptop and the steam deck it’s cool to see repairable tech getting some time in the limelight

Very cool to see repairable tech in the limelight. I've been using a 2009 Mac Pro for a few years now that I purchased 2nd hand. It's running Monterey because I was able to upgrade it, and the community patching the OS of course. Shopping for a MacBook right now feels like I'm throwing away any resemblance of what I have now. How long will Apple support Apple Silicon macs? Will they be able to run unsupported versions of macOS like the intel models have? And also the price - yeesh! I don't want the air, I want a Pro and I just can't fathom paying so much for a computer. My only issue is macOS. I'm not sure I'm ready to give up on it yet.

For the time being if you want a beefy GPU to go along with the current CPU offerings that Framework has; you can always run the laptop (or desktop mode of the motherboard) with a eGPU box - LinusTechTips (who is an initial investor in the company and does his best to review the products fairly against other companies offerings) took his 11th-gen launch version of the laptop, updated the BIOS on the motherboard the laptop came with (required to let the older 11th-gen boards run without battery), and swapped the 11th-gen motherboard in to a 3D-printed case (like Luke here) before hooking it up to a RTX 2070 eGPU whilst the laptop frame was rocking the 12th-gen motherboard. I'd honestly be surprised if you can't just run the laptop (no matter what CPU/motherboard combo you have in it) off a eGPU and only have the eGPU plugged in to mains so the eGPU box is basically a 'dock' for the laptop with a single cable powering the laptop and feeding data between laptop and eGPU.

Massive L to Apple, they just proved you can build thin and upgradeable pro level stuff, not have your data fked if the laptop ever dies, nor get the whole value ruined. The failure rate will likely be a lot lower than Apple, when if your Retina MacBook doesn't work exactly as intended it's insanely hard to tell what's wrong, you are only swimming in the void when trying to fix one of these... I'm in freakin love with these devices. I don't need a laptop right now because I have plenty given how many I fix from scrap, + I game so a 120hz display and dedicated graphics are needed in my daily driver (the 120hz display isn't quite needed but is a huge plus), and last of all I am broke, so definitely not buying one of these right now... But if I see one with dedicated graphics and a high refresh rate panel, I'll definitely save up for it!
@rohithmekala2608
@rohithmekala2608 Жыл бұрын
No its not a massive L. Apple does have an advantage with their ARM chips being efficient and fast. The 14" and 16" MBP 2021 are MUCH better than this Framework laptop in terms of performance, battery life and display on those is already 120hz with miniLED. The unified RAM makes it so that you can also have large VRAM pool. In terms of ultrabooks, the M2 Macbook Air is thinner and fanless(no dust and some users prefer fanless design) and has WAY more battery life than the Framework. You lose something by going modular. In saying that the Framework is great for people who value modularity.
@Zebra_Paw
@Zebra_Paw Жыл бұрын
@@rohithmekala2608 you do not lose anything by going this modular. I am sure it is theoretically possible to build the M2 MacBook Air like this. Btw even with their fantastic ARM chips they still reach 100 degrees under load and throttle, Apple has always been so bad at cooling. A good example of this is the 8600M GT failure, it pretty much only happens in MacBooks! I kept a Dell laptop with it for 15 years with no problems whatsoever and I load it with Minecraft, it will reach 150+ FPS default settings in Bedwars, with Windows 11 running pretty much natively! Also the average user doesn't need that much performance, and prefer their data to be savable if the computer has a heart attack. Don't reply to this by saying you should keep saves, because it's true but it's also true most people don't! A soldered SSD... not a big deal you gonna say. If it dies, just buy a Samsung T7 and enjoy. Well, no... part of the firmware is on that soldered SSD, so if it dies it will just take your MacBook to the graveyard! +support time is horrible. Right now, I am a random user, I bought a MacBook Pro in 2017, but it's a 2016 model. I was told they get supported for 7 years. What do I learn? Gets dropped this year for no technical reason other than burying Intel Macs into the past. Take the example of my Dell again... runs Windows 11, I had very little trouble installing ALL the drivers. No, really, ALL of them, not a single standard PCI bridge or AHCI controller left! And how did I install Windows 11 you may ask? Well, by following the TPM requirement bypass tutorial Microsoft provides on their official website! 15 years of support, not even over!

I'm currently an IT college student and I've been flipflopping back in forth in my mind about replacing both my 2008 15" mbp (the one model with an actual battery door!) and a desktop PC to a 16" M1 or the frame.work laptop. Given the windows environment nature of the course I initially leaned towards a used decked out intel 16" mbp, so I could drive both OSes on a single machine, then I leaned to the M1 because it's simply crazy powerful and has a great battery life to last a while. But the current unicellular design of the newest apple products meaning that once any part breaks down, you have to throw away the entire thing has kept me from fully wanting an M1, even though I could emulate Windows within Mac OS. So even if the 13.5" frame.work is not 16" nor does it have a discrete GPU, I still preordered a 12th gen laptop out of excitement that this laptop brings to the game. I'm gonna consider an Apple laptop IF Apple goes back to pre-Retina MacBooks desing (swappable batterie, RAM, hard drives). But I'm not holding my breath since Apple designed the M1 as an SoC and I doubt they would wanna ditch this desing so soon. That being said, Frame.Work please consider a 15/16" model with intercompatibility and a discrete GPU! edit: ahahah I had written this comment before watching the vid and Luke has bascally the same wish as I for Frame.Work :D
