I really liked the video. This is the heart and soul of your operation and it’s very entertaining. If you could break down how much you get per face cord and a rough estimate of how many sticks of firewood in a face cord you could look at those pieces dropping into your trailer as 50 cents to a dollar a plop!

'Mornin', Joe. Looks like you're getting another break in the weather. Only takes a good day or two to remind you why you put up with working out in the rain/snow/sub-zero weather! Live deck is great for your operation. Looks like your wood comes mostly from forest thinning, with straight logs. Branches would be more challenging. Does Japa offer a trash separating grill for the end of the conveyor? If not, see if Andrew will send you one. It'll keep a lot of trash out of the truck.

I was testing a set of grizzly bars for Japa but they had me send them back. Scraps don't really bother me bc we stack and hand load. All the chaff gets left behind. Joe

Hi Joe - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. A most interesting video of you doing proper work! My chief learning from it is the value, or necessity, of using clean, straight and consistently sized logs to optimise the production capabilities of the overall outfit. Do you have a preference for feeding the logs a certain way? I know my outfit is totally different but I always feed the wider end into my Hakki Pilke Eagle for various reasons. Great to hear that your Head of Video Production is returning to keep you on your toes and enhance your filming even further!

Joe, I'm really impressed with your operation. I also watch Chris in Wisconsin and your operation is so much more smooth and comfortable than his. Now that being said yours is a lot more expensive than his. Now how to evaluate the differences is getting out of the realm of just cutting firewood and producing firewood. What is the final analysis of profitability between you and Chris? I know there are a lot of factors that come into play here. If it were me making firewood I would much rather have your setup even if the profit margin were less!
@ohiowoodburner
@ohiowoodburner 3 жыл бұрын
One of the realities for me Ed is...believe it or not...is profitability related to my machines was NOT my biggest factor in buying them. I had committed to myself that I wanted to live this lifestyle and stay in the firewood game as long as I can therefore I couldnt continue to make firewood the way Chris does. Just couldn't do it. Machines allow me to stay at it. I think the volume increase over time would bring a higer $$ but...

You still have to stack the wood by species & to customer stacked. Some of the other firewood sawyers are using the outside cages of totes without the plastic liners to deliver to customers. You could use plastic insert if food grade, to protect customers wood from weather. Some have used the truck bed circulation mats to move wood & totes forward to load & backward to unload. Splitter would it be even faster if, it sawed the log while waiting for splitter return. Would need a manual adjustment switch to set proper timing. I like the live deck. You're going to need employees, as you grow. This set up is productive.

@@ohiowoodburner, thanks. Am surprised they chains last that long. In a regular chainsaw I get nowhere near that level of longevity on a sharpening. Must be a combination of the power of the hydraulic saw and the clean wood that it lasts that long.

That japa is a great machine! Depends on a number of factors I’m sure but about how long does it take to push through a cord of the log diameter you’ve got in the deck in this vid?
@ohiowoodburner
@ohiowoodburner 3 жыл бұрын
I could prob do 1 cord in 60-70 min. I would load up the deck and park my trailer broadside.

where did you get the logs and how much do you pay for the logs. we have a firewood business but its hard to get long straight logs unless you buy them . we also have a tree removal service and its hard to get logs the right size and straight .

I buy the logs from a local logger. He tries to bring me the logs ideal for my machine. Joe

Not very big max 14" diameter. But the log hauler plays a big role in getting me the optimum logs

How difficult was it to get the live deck leveled and assigned with the processor? Also, did you do all the assembly and setup?
@ohiowoodburner
@ohiowoodburner 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Kendall. The team from Metsa Machines came down from Wisconsin and assembled it. The feet are adjustable and it aligned pretty easy IMO.

How long will you let those splits sit in your wood yard? Didn’t know if you consider those poles sitting in your pile as “seasoning”.
@ohiowoodburner
@ohiowoodburner 3 жыл бұрын
Splits sit depending on species about 4-6 months also depending on weather, heat etc. We don't consider anything firewood until it is split and stacked.

Honestly Jim I don't work in rainy weather. I will get my paperwork done then or give myself the day off. I just don't like working in the rain. If I get a roof it would be to keep me out of the sun

What's the purpose of the separator spikes when it already has those 3 sided spike on the front roller that really only grabs one log at a time anyway?
@ohiowoodburner

They will grab two logs if you let them get bunched up. It has happened to me before.

Joe, how often do you have to sharpen that chain saw? If I was 30 years younger I would buy one of those processor
@ohiowoodburner

The chain lasts about 6 cords. It is standard Oregon chain

I buy the logs from a local log hauler. I'm not sure when these were harvested but I go for 20% moisture content AFTER they are made into firewood. Thanks Kent.

Thanks for the video. My only comment is I feel like your conveyor/elevator is too high and the wood is falling harder into the trailer bed. Maybe it is optimal for getting the trailer loaded, but it looks too high on the video.
@ohiowoodburner
@ohiowoodburner 3 жыл бұрын
It seems fine when you are standing by it. I used to have a 7' conveyor but upgraded to the 14' bc I will need it when I get moved to the back 40

So how do you know when you have cut a full cord of wood?
@ohiowoodburner
@ohiowoodburner 3 жыл бұрын
I think it is based on intuition. I know how full the trailer gets and after multiple loads of stacking you just get a sense.
