In answer to your question, necessity is mother of all invention. As you mentioned PTO powered processors and popular in Europe. The only draw back to PTO powered processors is that you don't have the tractor to move logs around when you finish the first stack.

I think you summed up the benefit at the end - if you are looking to move the processor to the logs - especially off-road - then this probably comes into it's own. If you are a static processor where you bring the logs to it, then probably better with the self powered version. Nice video showing the differences though, thanks.

@@ohiowoodburner mainly farmers in Europe use PTO wood processor, they have at least one old tractor standing on the farm, and they leave the tractor / wood processor as a stationary workplace and use newer machinery to move timber / wood. Often an old discarded Massey Ferguson, fordson, Volvo BM, etc. from the 60's or 70's with a diesel engine is used for this purpose, they are unbreakable. here is an example of woodworking on a farm. kzbin.info/www/bejne/r2Gpd6Vqit2Sjqc

As its really the machine for satisfying simple homeowner firewood needs in Finland...you get a lot done in one weekend and then you have firewood for the whole next year(thats not many hours at all). Here the trees are kinda really straight and we dont have any large trees (not nearly as large as trees can be at the states) the machine is made for those parameters in mind. Also here on finnish farms we always seem to have one of those old tractors without a loader or even hydraulics to run the woodsplitter. Neat simple and effective firewood maker :)

Watching you work it, I think the weakest parts are the initial log lift and the belt feed. The lift looks a bit wonky, and the belt needs to be a lot coarser and thicker. Having to hand roll a heavier thicker log onto the feed just begs for squashed fingers or a broken wrist. The handle for the chainsaw also need to be shortened a bit for better leverage. Otherwise, what a neat piece of equipment....
@folke1967

Great machine, when you already have a tractor and start the other way round than you did and don't have a budget for a machine like the 365. In Germany and I guess in most European countries you can have a 400 V 3-phase-AC electrical outlet installed and so it is possible to order a JAPA 315 with electric propulsion for this voltage. There are even manufacturers, who deliver their machines with a combination of both propulsion types.

Awesome video Joe! I’ve often wondered about these PTO powered processors… They seem like an economical solution however you lose all of the functionality of your tractor in helping you move logs and split firewood! I would however be very interested in trying one!
@jamesmckay9966
@jamesmckay9966 3 жыл бұрын
You've got it figured correctly. You are looking at the need for a 2nd tractor for moving logs to the machine. I personally would look to an engine on the unit. which be more economical then running a 2nd tractor. even if you had one available.

Hi Joe!!😀😀 The 315 is definitely a nice little firewood processor. It would be interesting to see you put it on the back of your Ford 2000 and see how it handles it. I bet it would run it nicely. That way you would have the Bobcat to stage logs with. I would like a 365 that hooks up to the back of a tractor. I have several tractors just sitting around doing nothing and it would make it very mobile. Take care my friend!!😀😀👍👍 Logger Al

@IvorClegg
@IvorClegg 3 жыл бұрын
Yep, PTO powered machines are huge over here. As others have said, they tie up a tractor, so you need to have something else to do the moving and loading at the same time. The processor SHOULD be stable enough to run off the 3-point linkage though, so if you can set it up to work with a deck, you can load the deck first and then just connect up the PTO and process until the deck is empty. Repeat as required. My youngest tractor here is 1988, and the one that runs the processor is from sometime in the early 70's. Hours on the clock are completely immaterial :-) On most European machines, the model number is approximately the maximum cutting size in millimetres. The 315 in this case is 315mm (12-and-a-bit inches), your 365 maxes out at 365mm, a little over 14 inches. That spinning PTO cover is giving me the heeby-jeebies! There should have been chains supplied with it, PLEASE fit them and lock the thing off.
@ohiowoodburner
@ohiowoodburner 3 жыл бұрын
I'm hearing you about the drive shaft! And yes the 315 can work unattached from the tractor! Thanks for the post Ivor. I saw you on the Workshop today as well. I'm glad people outside the USA could log on. I appreciate your support of OWB!
@IvorClegg
@IvorClegg 3 жыл бұрын
@@ohiowoodburner The Workshop was great, but I was unfortunately called away about an hour or so in, and by the time I got back home, it was family time for the evening. So, I missed most of it :-( Regarding the PTO cover, a bit of research is telling me that there's a couple of trains of thought on the use, or non use, of the restraining chains over in the US. Over here in Europe, it's something of an Article of Faith that all these safety features must be used at all times. An unrestrained PTO cover over here will fail you your Farm Inspection, and the use of all these things is drilled into us all through Ag-College and throughout further training and workshops. The US debate on the subject has me now pondering the dogmatic approach to this... This stuff is most noticeable to me in the almost complete absence of US manufactured firewood equipment in the European market; I suspect the costs and engineering problems of building in all the mandated safety features make it uneconomic. I'd personally like to thank you for showing me, and I suspect many others, that there's a much better way of running a firewood business than just making noise 'playing' with the machines and then hunting around for an outlet to 'dispose' of the product. I'm not a 'Sales Guy', and I'd far prefer swinging a saw in the woods and operating the processing equipment, but you've inspired me to look much more closely at adding value to my product, and in making both the product and myself more presentable to the potential customer. So, thanks, and keep up the good work!

Cool intro. No way I'd drive a tractor over my camera! It would be great if it were free-standing so you could use the tractor to load the deck, then just back it up to the Japa and connect the PTO without having to deal with the 3-point hitch... but then I'd probably forget to disconnect the PTO and drag the processor across the log yard. On the other hand, you can buy an old 8N Ford for about what the engine would cost you. Lots of Europeans use electric motors for power, but everyone has access to 220V, 3-phase over there.

PTO driven is actually very common here in general for all kinds of equipment, there are even big splitters for 60 or 100hp+ tractors (rare tho). Thing is, that a lot of people have tractors with thousands of hours on already and are also efficient because diesel. A lot of farmers produce firewood in the winter "on the side" basically. What they do is split on location and make bundles (or stacked) of about a face cord in 1m or 40 inches length. When it is dry they cut it up to the length you want, common are 25cm, 33cm or 50 for boilers (10, 13, 20 inches). Wood boilers are very rare in germany, only in the south and Austria people have them usually. Reason is they have more wood there, so it's cheap. Diesel heating used to be common, not so much anymore. Now natural gas is mostly used, sometimes wood pallets.

On the other side of the coin, using your tractor to run the processor lowers your fixed costs per hour of operation on the tractor. So your accounting department might like using the tractor. It sounds like easy work for the tractor, I didn't hear it strain at all. Tractors are made to be worked... not looked at ;-) If you can run out the warranty by using up the hours before using up the calendar, you're putting your tractor to good use.

They are the same thing. In Ohio you can choose between a number of them. I chose Ltd because I think it sounded more sophisticated. And...maybe... because it was one of our old family cars when I was young. 1973 Ford Ltd LOL.

stiff competition, in Finland this type of machine is made by Japa, Pilkemaster, Hakki pilke, Sami, Palax + Bilke and probably more. In Norway we have Dalen and Igland. In sweden they have at least 3 giljotin type for houshold use. ++++

For the most part I agree. We have created a generation of the laziest, entitled cry baby CEOs and corporate leadership in the history of this country. There are very few innovators here anymore. All our cars look a like, all our planes, our retailers, etc no one is willing to take a risk and innovate. They beg Washington for tax cuts and buy back their own stock. Then they publish a book about how great an American they are. If only we could quit voting for politicians who keep giving tax cuts to these corporations who outsource production to other countries.
