I know the PS system produces waste, but can't you cull those for your kindling stacks? From what I saw in one of the previous videos, it looks like some of those come out just about the perfect kindling size, and the larger ones would only require a single split.

Hi Joe!!😀😀 The 405 definitely has a lot more splitting power than the 365 did. I wonder if you messed with the setting and made the pusher come just to the wedge if it would clear so you could adjust the wedge? It is definitely a lot faster than the box wedge. But it seems like the 6 way dosen't make as much waste as the perfect split wedge dose. Thanks for showing us how well it works. Take care my friend!!😀😀👍👍💚 Logger Al

There is a simple cure for the problem. Always load your logs small end first, and there will be no need to lower the knife as often. The small end of the next log will then clear the large log on the next ram.
@ohiowoodburner2 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. It seems that just never seems to end up that way. When the bigger end enters first I can put a longer log onto the table bc it is balanced in my favor. Thansk Glen
@killinskindlingfirewood18512 жыл бұрын
Hey Joe, I don’t know the ins and outs of what the Japa 405 can do, but I’m sure there are experts in the field that do. I would think playing with the pusher values will set the pusher plate closer to the wedge. Also, I have the same problem with my little processor and what I would do is push the next cut block to the edge of wedge and stop. This will push the last piece through the wedge enough to remove the pieces or allow me to raise and lower the wedge. Also, I find sorting my logs by diameter helps with wedge selection, so I’m not changing them in and out during log feeds to get the ideal split size for my market intent. You should replace those bolts soon. Not having them may cause an unnecessary wear somewhere else along the pusher plate area. I like the easy removal and insertion process with the built in crane. 🪵😎👍
@ohiowoodburner2 жыл бұрын
In a perfect world I could sort by size. I did that with the 365 but sometimes the logs load wrong. Also if the taper is considered the big end would go thru last making all this a moot point but that makes the log tippy on the table and then i can't put a longer log on.
@killinskindlingfirewood18512 жыл бұрын
@@ohiowoodburner True, it would depend on how much taper you have in the log or even branch outs. Always try to put bottom end of the log in first. 😉. Even the box wedge is not perfect. Lot more thin pieces and waste, then the normal wedges.
@peterh99272 жыл бұрын
Very interesting comparison of the splitting knives. Is sorting logs for size and constantly swapping knives something you would do ? Keeping the 6way always in and doing some resplitting when necessary seems more efficient. Keep us updated on this. Always a good discussion on the firewood business. Have a great July 4th weekend !!

@grabow39582 жыл бұрын
The box wedge makes beautiful square wood but even the 6 way makes the right size wood. The Japa 405 seems to create a lot less waste than most of the other machines on KZbin, you made the right choice. 👍

I am digging this machine. In this configuration it blows away the 365. I would have never guessed it.
Oh Joe, I know with a bit more use, you’ll figure out the most streamline way of processing. Elaine from Canada here and here’s what came to my sleepy Sunday morning brain…With those bigger splits, could you save them up then toss a few at a time back in the chamber for another pass through the 6-way? (Ugghh , sounds like work so you probably wouldn’t want to do that too many times either) But besides all that, great video! You get us interested in how the 405 can be adjusted, we can hear the Diesel engine purring, clanging of your wrench against metal, the clicking sound of a winch, and the squeal of pain when you get your knuckles bashed! Love these high-action videos 😂. Happy 4th of July Independence Day to you and your family.

The diesel is an amazing engine. Very powerful an economic on fuel. I have run 9 tables of logs and I still have over a 1/4 tank.
@thefirewooddoctor2 жыл бұрын
Joe, with your experience and in your opinion, who do you think the "assemble it yourself" processors with a small live deck for say $10k be good for? Would use one for small logs that runs logs into fireplace sized pieces in one push and no resplitting. The rest of them I'd use a chainsaw and commercial log splitter. Am thinking for someone with a small tractor that can only lift 8-10in logs the small processors would be great and use the commercial splitter for the bigger stuff.
@ohiowoodburner2 жыл бұрын
It all depends on if you can get the wood that it can handle. If you can get some straight tri axle logs you will be in good shape. Choose wisely bc Machines can solve a lot of problems.

Another great video Joe, very informative. Another video idea would be to compare the amount of trash produced from 6way vs perfect split. Even though the perfect split will make more trash and be a bit slower I think it will be the one you run the most. On a side note I got my road side stand up and going this week and have had a couple customers already. $5 bundles and $20 stacks. No bundle sales yet but 3 stacks sold since Thursday so we'll see how it goes. Also been delivering 1/6 & 1/4 cords of value added firewood for about a month and have been real pleased with that so far. Thanks to you Joe, I've learned I can make money selling firewood. Had gotten out of it for a few years because I was tired of getting beat up over pricing and now I know I'm serving a market that exists and is under served. Good video joe I enjoy seeing the technical part of the machines . I have a multitek , after owning a processor u know better what to really look for when u see them run. There are some things designed better on your machine and some a bit worse. I see a few things that may not hold up without problem. Also it will be jamming up when nasty wood is run through it. That’s important to show people who want a processor, real world wood you buy from a logger has real problems for the operator. I would love to see a nasty jamb get hammered out of the jappa, nobody ever wants to show us that.

More great content, thanks for showing us the unfiltered first attempt at this. You'll undoubtedly become much quicker at changing splitting systems in and out. I LIKE the little winch for lifting the components! Like a lot of these things, I suspect the individual items themselves aren't outrageously heavy, but the awkwardness of getting them in and out of the machine is where there's a lot of potential for squashed fingers and back injuries. As every (original!) nut and bolt on that machine will be metric, I'd suggest you look at buying a few reasonably priced sets of metric tools: wrenches, sockets, allen keys, etc. As you loose/break tools, replace with higher priced better quality individual items. A cordless impact wrench would significantly speed up the change-over process too.

I was thinking the same thing the whole time I was watching. Just change the program for the ram. It looked like it was measuring about 4cm from the knife. Maybe read the manual to see where they say to set it for a vertical knife?

with the pusher adjustment if you did this before you put the knife in would you remove the chance of damaging something? It looks as though you could have got the pusher a lot closer to the knife. It seems a lot more refined machine than the Eastonmade.

I will get it zeroed in soon. I wasn't feeling too good this day so I just wanted to get it done LOL Thanks Dan

Hey Joe, what can I say but another great informative video. I suppose it's a short coming I just think it's totally necessary that the pusher doesn't hit the blade I think all processors have the same issue. Maybe they can make a little adapter that you could use but I suppose it's a pain in the a.. especially when you want to regularly change the height of the blade Maybe I hear a patent coming on Stay well Amico mio Benedetto from DownUnder 🇮🇹

What if you changed the setting from -4 to -2, would that get you closer to the knife?

i think it would. I will be trying that next

I think I would prefer it but I have some small logs coming up and prob the traditional knives would be more appropriate

You did a good job changing the box wedge for a six way wedge, 8 way wedge would be better,

@@martynelson9991 Big Rodders again. I'm a Southerner who moved up here 45 years ago and happily stayed despite all the carnage in the early years before the Peace Process. I used to split logs for a major producer in Carryduff, up to 180 cords a year, until a couple of years ago and it's now around 20 cords. I've been poking Joe with a sharp stick since his early days and greatly enjoy the camaraderie as it can be a lonely hobby here, as no doubt you know.
