Please please please do an episode on Samantha’s past! There are several gems dropped about her upbringing that really paint her as such an interesting and complex character. My personal head canon is that her mother passed away when Samantha was in her 20/30’s, and she never really processed it, hence her reaction to Miranda. I also love Samantha’s and Miranda’s relationship. They’re both so similar in how they guard their emotions. When Miranda suffers it takes Samantha time to come to terms with Miranda’s pain, such as when Brady was first born, but Sam always comes and is there for Miranda. It nuanced and beautiful. As always, amazing analysis!

A stunning episode. When I roast the SATC movies and AJLT, it's episodes like this that remind me of the show at it's best and why I was such a huge fan. The moment that gets me. (and you highlight it beautifully here in this video) is when Miranda and Carrie are holding hands behind the casket and see Aidan and Steve standing there. It shows that even when we're hurting, or upset, being irrational or when we push people away because we're really disappointed with ourselves: good friends will always show up for you.

That's such a fascinating note that the frustration with Carrie's character (from the audience) comes from the writer not knowing how to gracefully incorporate her into episodic themes... it makes so much sense! I get that the show wanted to make her "iconic," make sure she was never quite overshadowed by the other characters, but I think the impulse to make her storylines bigger and more impactful (rather than the "small" moments you described, like assembling an IKEA bed, or simply letting her be a bit player in a bigger storyline for someone else) really hurt the character in the end. It felt like the character, in a way, was DEMANDING our attention, rather than letting the organic reveals of the ins and outs of her life charm us over time, despite whatever else about her might rub someone the wrong way. I really think you've nailed why so much affection remains for Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte, even with some of their dated or personal issues, while people struggle to keep connecting with Carrie the way they once did.

I’m exactly the same. My mum died I think 18 months after I first saw this episode but on rewatching a few years later, it took me right back and floored me for a few days. Miranda walking out of the church alone desperately trying to hold in her sobs in particular as that was me. No one would catch my eye as I walked and I was desperate for someone to cling to just for a minute so I wouldn’t fall. It’s so strange how my friends reacted - the ones I thought would be present and supportive hid from me and casual acquaintances stepped up and provided rock-like stability and strength to me. It’s been 20 years now since she died and Miranda’s lonely walk, her breakdown whilst buying a bra and trying to maintain some dignity and grace in the face of devastation hits me deeply with its resonance. The beauty of Carrie running to be beside her friend and kissing her hand never fails to make me cry even today. I wished I had a Carrie at the time. I hope you are doing okay ♥️

My mom had passed away about a year and a half before this. I'll just say... this episode hit me HARD. Yes it was normal to have a payphone in places with waiting rooms. We had these things called beepers: someone would beep you a number then you would go to the payphone and call them back. It stops the customers from asking to use the business phone lines.

So glad your channel appeared in my feed! As a lifelong SATC fan I've always proclaimed that four seasons in, this was the very first episode that made my cry. The only other eps to propel me to grab tissues were The Ick Factor (Sam revealing to the girls she had breast cancer during Miranda and Steve's reception) and the finale (part 2). The scene in the dressing room broke me and was beautifully executed. Not sure why it hadn't previously dawned on me that Charlotte was the comforter/nuturer to all her friends in this episode in their time of need. Samantha has been my favorite since day 1 and now that I'm in my 40s and find myself battling some internal conflicts, her storyline in this ep resonates deeply. Carrie certainly redeemed herself towards the end when she stepped in line to provide instant support to Miranda. Your critique re: how the writers failed to organically integrate her storylines to be more relateable is rather solid. I've viewed a few dozen channels over the years and to see the amount of disdain for SJP's character onscreen and off screen, is somewhat disheartening, but I can understand the contempt again, onscreen and IRL as it pertains to the strained relationship between her and KC. Pardon me while I binge watch your videos this weekend. 😉

For me, this is the last “this is what SATC is supposed to feel like” episode. There were some good episodes after this. But almost immediately after this one the show gets more fantastical, less gritty and less self-aware when it comes to the women’s flaws (especially Carrie’s) and just generally more cheesy. I believe the issue with Carrie wasn’t her flaws but rather that the writers started seeing her materialism, hypocrisy, self-destruction as cute and adorable. Also, her relationships started to become tiresome and uninteresting, especially the continued “romance” with Big.

Pay phones used to be everywhere before cell phones. Everywhere. Grocery stores, outside of strip malls, the post office. You did find them outside more often so they’d be more accessible, but the bigger or more crucial a store/service was, the more likely it was that you’d find a pay phone or two there. Remember, without cell phones, pay phones were a massive business. Anywhere you found lots of people or lots of waiting, pay phones were there.

Could Aiden’s white knight syndrome frustrate and upset Carrie so much due to her being fatherless? I always felt Aiden took great care of her and it’s something I always accepted in my relationships. I wanted someone like Aiden to just pull everything together for me while Carrie, it practically triggers her fight or flight. I’ve had strong males in my life, my father and I’ve been with my partner for many years. Maybe that’s why she preferred Big over Aiden. Carrie prefers trying to be self sufficient until absolutely needing help. Big only stepped in when asked until the very end, and in the very end, she desperately needed the hand and to go home.

I think it’s worth looking at Aidan’s toxic masculinity in this episode a little closer, as I think Carrie’s behavior wasn’t as off note as we think. Aidan is trying to offer the wrong type of support, he wants to fix the problem instead of offering the emotional support and space Carrie needs. The further he tries to push, the further he gets from giving his partner the support she needs, and the more frustrated Carrie becomes. This is a problem for many couples as far as I’m aware, and highlights the beginning of their downfall. I believe that Aidan’s unwillingness to change the way he communicates dooms them from the start, as I don’t think he truly knows who Carrie is and what she needs and wasn’t ever really willing to understand.

I think you touch on a good point. Nowadays we talk about the 5 love languages and such but back then it wasn't a thing. Aiden is trying to show love but the way he is doing it is the opposite of what Carrie needed. They were incompatible in many ways and unable to communicate effectively.

Personally I think Aidan is a dick in this episode when it comes to the computer. Carrie is obviously struggling with loosing all her work and her computer that she spends everyday working on and it’s very meaningful to her and rather than just be there for her Aidan just takes over, makes stupid comments that obviously are not helping. He then decides he should be the one to buy a new computer on his own rather than including Carrie in the decision and then starts doing everything and as sweet as that is on the surface it’s obviously not what Carrie needs and as boyfriend he should be able to see how much distress she’s in but makes it about him instead. Best thing Aidan does in this ep is show up at the funeral with Steve to show support for Miranda and Carrie even though Carrie said not to as that’s the type of support Carrie needed.

Here’s the thing. The only reason you criticize Aidan for this is because the show brought him back SPECIFICALLY so his appeal could take a hit. Carrie’s ratings and appeal TANKED after she cheated on a guy who the show had made practically perfect. The whole reason the brought him back was to introduce flaws into his character so the audience would shift allegiance back to Carrie. Clearly it worked. You were manipulated. And it worked.

Carrie’s relationship with Aidan was a miscalculation on the side of the show. They made Aidan TOO likeable the first time. So when Carrie cheated on him, there was no way to forgive Carrie for the betrayal. He was the angel and Carrie was the undeniable and unforgivable villain. Her character and the show took a massive hit for what she did because Aidan was flawless. That’s the entire reason they brought him back. They needed to “humanize” Aidan. In other words, they needed to knock him down and introduce character flaws that hadn’t been there before. They needed the audience to hate Aidan a little, so Carrie could recover a bit. So suddenly, Aidan binges on KFC and needs his bulging stomach rubbed instead of going out with Carrie. Suddenly he’s yelling about deodorant and Rogaine. Suddenly he’s pressuring her into marriage because he’s jealous of Big. Suddenly he’s an obnoxious jerk who doesn’t respect Carrie’s boundaries, career, or space. Aidan was too perfect the first time. They literally only brought him back to turn him into a dick so Carrie could win back fan favor. Gross.

Aiden was always over eager to push a lifestyle onto Carrie that wasn’t fit for the kind of person she was. While he may be many women’s “dream guy” he was certainly not the guy Carrie dreamed about, and actually clashed with more often than not. I don’t think he was worse than many of them, by far, but I also side eye the people that say he was the best. They were so fundamentally incompatible and that absolutely led to patronizing on both sides. He wanted a country, domestic, fix it for ya life and she wanted Manolos, the newest restaurants, and the cover of Vogue.
