As others have pointed out, the place you went to is not a "flea market" in the traditional sense. It is more of what is known as a "antique mall" where the various vendors rent their booths. It is more of a regular retail location. These people price their items as they do because they are looking to get top dollar or retail prices for them. These are business people, not people cleaning out their garage and hoping to get a quick buck. They are not marketing to resellers, but rather end consumers. I spent many years collecting video games and there were the same arguments then. People would brag about how they got some $100 game for $5 after talking the people down from $10 and laugh about how stupid the people were for not knowing what they had. The same people, when seeing the game priced for $90 or so would complain about people wanting Ebay prices at a flea market or yard sale, like there is a law somewhere that flea market or yard sale stuff must be cheap. Here is a thought: If you don't like the price, don't buy it. If enough time goes by they may realize that the price is too high and drop it, but that is their business.

I have 22 booths in all (all in different flee markets). Here is the problem.... It cost $2-$4 per SQ ft (my booths average $220/mo). On top of that, the owner takes 15% of all your sales (plus they make you agree to let them give out 10% discounts to anyone who asks for one). It actually costs more to run a booth at a flee market then to sell online. The problem is, all these resellers. I own a brick and mortar store, I use the flee markets for advertising/sell a few things/storage for extras (this way nothing is sitting in a storage unit not getting sold). But now you have resellers with no business license, not paying taxes flooding in and turning flee markets into a "get rich quick" scheme. Just one opinion....

I have seen a huge rise in prices at the flea markets, thrift stores, and goodwills. I even see quite a few yardsales with eBay print off to show you the eBay price. The big issue for me when it comes to paying eBay prices on electronics at a flea market is the lack of quality control and returns. I spent 115 dollars for a ps2 and about 15 games at a thrift store BUT the only reason I did it was because they had a 10 day return policy, something that most thrift/flea markets don't do.

One thing everyone needs to keep in mind is that booth rental fees are not usually cheap - Sometimes the first $100 to $300 of sales each month goes to rental fees and then most store owners take another 5 to 10 percent of sales at the end of each month. That being said I try to buy inventory at the lowest possible price and then price merch 10 percent or more below Ebay price. Just saying life aint always so easy for resellers but is a lot of fun.

I understand your frustration Rick. I think several things cause this. One is that the cost of living has gone up for everyone, so people want to get as much for their items as they can. Also, like someone else mentioned, they see resellers on youtube buying something for two dollars and reselling it for forty and they want to do the same. And I would guess prices they have to pay for their booths have gone up as well. Plus the gas and time it takes them to find this stuff. Ultimately it's there choice what price they want to put on their things and if you don't want to pay it, just pass it by. Maybe if it doesn't sell they will lower the price over time.

Flea Markets and thrift stores use to be a place where low income families could get good deals on games and toys for their kids for example a set of parents gave their kid $50 for Christmas and that was all the parents could afford so the kid would go to flea markets and thrift stores and rack up several gifts bc nearly everything was cheap until the store owners realized that adults where going in and buying all the games and toys for a really cheap price and reselling the items at a huge markup thankfully the small town I live in still carries that principal of keeping prices low for those people who can't afford to pay marked up prices

If you think about a $20 game on eBay, you will pay around 7-8 in shipping and fees so your only making $12 online, and that takes time to create the listing. $10 for a $20 game just makes since at a flea market; people will buy a game 50% off, maybe not you because you would resell, but if there was a good game there you wanted for the collection, you might pay 50% of its cost. Also, all these people trying to say antique mall vs flea market. In my area they are ALL called antiques malls. Other places, they're all flea markets. I am sure there are areas where they are 2 distinctively different things, but not here, and probably not where you are at either.

He reminds me of myself when I first started reselling. I went to antique malls and gawked at their prices. Then I educated myself and learned that antique malls are not for resellers, they’re for collectors. They’re for people looking to find rare stuff and being able to touch it and take it home that day. The convenience of NOT having to deal with online headaches and to occasionally get a “good deal” if you got lucky, just like at any other retail store. To add, it costs me more to run my antique mall booth than it does for me to have a store on eBay. Most decent sized booths cost $125-$200 a month depending on the size, plus the 10-20% per sale that the mall takes. eBay is $30 a month plus 10-15% per sale. Remember that the next time you go by I an antique mall. You’re paying for the convenience of being able to see and hold the item before buying it and then to take it home that day. Buying online can be a risk for certain items, and can waste your time and money if it doesn’t turn out exactly like you thought. Regarding flea market prices The “logic” behind selling for eBay prices is 1. You can physically inspect the item. Sure, the pic on eBay might have a ton of pictures, but it’s not the same as examining it in person 2. You get it right away, and don’t have to worry about it getting lost/stolen/damaged in the mail. 3. The sellers have overhead, which are higher than eBay fees It makes a certain degree of sense, but considering tons of other sellers don’t do this, not a lot

at flea markets, it's usually sold as is. I've bought stuff at yard sales/flea markets that look amazing in condition and when I tested it didn't work. You can ask for more pictures to ebay sellers and ask questions also at least you're protected by ebay if the item isn't as described. Damaged items shouldn't be a worry to the buyer since it's not your fault and wouldn't be a problem with top rated sellers since they know how to package items. Also if you're buying items in the US, it wouldn't take long and you're saving yourself time and not driving to a place that might not have what you want. I've met a few people that have that "logic" but if flea markets sellers want those prices simply start an ebay store

As someone who works in retail the key difference between online ebay sales and buying in a flea market would really only come down to being able to physically see and handle the condition. Older people also tend to shy away from online purchases because they're used to that, and scams are less obvious for them online so one bad purchase steers them away entirely.

I completely agree, Retro Rick! I'm a Top Rated eBay Seller and I can re-affirm that eBay gets 15-20% of any sales that you make on there. It's absolutely fair to have an expectation that prices will be at least 15-20% less when going thrift shopping and what not. That and condition plays a role too. It drives me NUTS when I see something in mediocre condition with the price tag reflecting the sales price of the same item in mint shape. Does that make sense? I feel your pain!
@nicholasrashell4783
@nicholasrashell4783 3 жыл бұрын
It doesn’t make much sense anyway to price a lot of this obscure stuff so high. On eBay/online you have millions and millions of people who can see your item, search for your item in particular, whereas at a flea market you are limited to the handful of people who walk through it on a given day. Most of whom aren’t going in looking for your item in particular. There is a big difference between people intentionally seeking out an item for purchase, and just happening upon it randomly. You go to places like thrift stores and flea markets for the treasure hunt of it, when you price things so high you eliminate that and make it an inconvenience and pointless to go to a flea market. If I want something enough to pay retail I’m going to ebay, I’m not going to walk through a flea market a hundred days in a row hoping they have that thing I really want just to pay the same price I could have paid months or years ago.

Hey love the content. Love seeing the old toys and games I used to have. In the case of the prices that are high in flea markets , thift shops etc..... I used to shop all the time and get amazing deal on retro/ vintage items. Yes prices are up. But whos fault is it? Resellers and youtube , amazon, eBay. The price shift happened when all resellers started posting videos of what items are worth. So they started raising price to get the most out off items they see you guys sell for. Think about it they see resellers buying dirt cheap then selling at ridiculous prices. I stopped going these places , so had qlot of ppl ik because of this. It made the experience frustrating instead of fun. I feel really bad for the ones who went to these places cause they couldn't pay those prices. But it is what it is. Money talks in that way. Anyway continue the content.

I run an antique retro-inspired booth here in my town. My fees per month are substantial due to the size of the booth I have plus there is a 10% commission to the owner. I have to drive out to estate sales and spend time and gas to find these items which I enjoy doing. The fun is in the hunt but, that all comes back to the cost of the item in the booth so that I can make some profit. Inflation is everywhere just look around in our country today, the days of yesterday's pricing are gone, unfortunately. The uniqueness of the item and maybe scarcity should out way the cost in my opinion to the potential new owners of the items. It's all in what you want, plus buying from a booth there are no shipping costs associated so you save some on that. Just my two cents from the other side.
