Perkele was the god of thunder in the cultures where the word originated from but not in Finnish mythology itself. In fact, Perkele was seen as a false god and was branded as the devil (Saatana) or at least some embodiment of it. Ukko Ylijumala is, among many other things, the Finnish god of thunder. Very similar in that regard to Thor and Perkons (who was the one renamed to Perkele) in that regard.

Hi Dave! Would be fun to see you explore the different dialects of Finnish (murteet.) There are lots of words and forms only used in certain parts of the country. Maybe have your wife help with that. For example in the dialect spoken around Tampere 'tiuku' means 'clock' .
