‘This is what demagogues do’: Experts Warn of Civil War in America Ahead of Presidential Election

Bomb threats to schools in Ohio attended by immigrants, an assassination attempt on a presidential candidate, and an increase in threats to federal judges are just a few examples of the heightened level of political violence in the United States.
Much has been written about Donald Trump’s hateful rhetoric and incendiary language but what will happen if he loses the election? A study last year showed that violence is gaining mainstream acceptance, with one-third of Republicans saying that violence may be the answer to saving the US.
As the election approaches, can we totally discount the idea of a ‘civil war’ in the US?
Some say that this has all been a long-time coming. Jack Goldstone, an expert on Civil Unrest, practically predicted January 6th, writing alongside Peter Turchin less than two months before the 2020 election: “Is the US likely headed for still greater protests and violence? In a word, yes.”
In fact, Goldstone had already predicted over 25 years ago that in the 21st century, the US would elect a populist America-first leader who would inflict division and chaos onto the country.
Jack Goldstone, Professor of Public Policy at George Mason University joins this episode of ‘Mehdi Unfiltered’ together with one of the top experts on fascism, New York University’s History Professor Ruth Ben-Ghiat, the author of ‘Strongmen: Mussolini to the Present.’

The three pillars of democracy are that the citizen must always be strongest class to keep the aristocrats in check to prevent a oligarchy and to alleviate the plight of the poor to prevent a tyranny. One important component, as a veteran (officer) myself, is the military. Please look at the oath officers in the US military (in this case, Army) take: I (state your full name), having been appointed an officer in the Army of the United States, as indicated above in the grade of Second Lieutenant, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic, that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter, so help me God. As General Milley said (I paraphrase), we take our oath to defend the Constitution of the United States, not to a dictator or a wannabe dictator. Further, in the Uniform Code of Military Justice, that is much stricter than civilian law, and that many people don’t know about. It gives penalties, for instance, if you don’t follow a lawful order. This is necessary in a battlefield situation, of course, where you may be charged with desertion or worse. However, the key word, is LAWFUL. If there was a big rift in the military, those that broke their oath (assuming order holds) would find themselves under court-martial with severe penalties. It would be good to have a follow up discussion about this, as what Trump will do with the military if he is elected assumes the military will follow unconstitutional orders. Slow down and consider how our economy works. The President and Vice President don't set prices in a free market economy. So far the only thing that has proven to be effective against fascism has been communism. It's a hard pill to swallow for many in the West, since they're told all their life the opposite. But if you commit yourself to serious reading and analysis of what history reveals, that is the only logical conclusion. And this makes the current situation very dangerous. When an airplane goes into a spin, it usually starts with a stall. The air no longer follows the top surface of the wing causing the wing to lose much of its lift. The plane then drops, but one wing usually drops first. In our case, let's suppose it is the right wing. When this hsppens, the plane falls to the right. But the sudden uprush of air grips that wing then thrusts it violently upward, causing the plane to roll suddenly to the left. This can easily start a spin, if the pilot is not expecting this. What I am hinting at is that there may well be a military coup IF TRUMP WINS. And if this happens, such would be the effective end of what passes for democracy here. And the ultimate cause of all this trouble (in my view) is the growing awareness that elections have very little effect on actual policy. This has been true throughout my whole adult life (I'm 68). Iran (and probably Israel, too) is a democratic theocracy. Much of the horror going on in Gaza (and the US tolerance and comlicity in it) is likely due to religious beliefs. The IDF probably believes it is doing God's work. And so do a huge number of US Christians. Just read the Bible (the most evil book on my bookshelf). But the US is not a democratic theocracy (at least not yet). It is a democratic plutocracy. And it stands to soon become an autocratic one.
