I would take a look at your pmd before you throw an injection pump at it. Even relocated, the pmd's will fail. It just takes a little longer than the ones mounted on the pump. Usually, the part that fails internally on the pumps themselves is the optical sensor, which controls the timing

@TruckMaster also, if it has a PMD relocation kit, it could be the relocation harness. The cheaper PMD harnesses have horrible connections and pins in the connectors. I've also seen issues with the engine harness cause weird issues too. Most cheap PMDs use the original electronics which weren't the best. The Flight Systems PMD has a lifetime warranty and uses better electronics. Also Quadstar Tuning LLC is a good place to shop for the 6.2/6.5 diesels. They have all sorts of stuff both for maintenance and for upgrades/updates.

The wastegate issue could be a bad vacuum pump, vacuum lines have leaks, or the wastegate solenoid on the passenger side valve cover is bad. The 94+ 6.5 had issues with the vacuum system for the wastegate.

Get it up to temp. Load a new fuel filter with atf. Start it back up, rev it way up and shut it down. Let it sit. Hopefully this will clean up the injectors and pump.

Doesn't matter what and first Gen or 7.3 owner says, the Detroit has the best idle sound ever put in a pickup, can't beat the mechanical sound of those motors.

Check for air in fuel. This could cause the surging and white smoke. Check your harmonic balancer, It sounded like it was clunking. They are known to go bad, will take out crank if not fixed. Also check PMD, always have a spare. It too can cause surging idle, among other issues.

I would check the resister that goes to the top of the injection pump. Those resisters cause all kinds of weird problrns.. next the module will do what its doing.. make sure its a stanadyne module.. their is a updated gray one.. also replace the resister that goes in the plug of the module. You removed the vacuum pump. It will throw a over blast service code and will defuel.. the fixx. Put a 2 or 3 bar map sensor on it.. that will make it think it has less boost. Last if the injection pump is going bad the guy you want to use is badger diesel in wisconsin.. he is the best. Yes I was trained by gm to work on the 6 2 and 6.5s.. if you feel like doing a little more to the truck you can convert it back to a db2 pump from a 6.2.. have badger rebuild it and turn it up.. makes a huge difference.. if you want to chip the oe electronic db4 pump either leroy diesel or heath diesel can make you one.

look for a plugin jumper harness between the inj pump and the loom,it supposed to stop 60Hz interference,but the inductor that supply power to the pump breaks,also the earths on the inlet manifold dont work,solder them all to 2 thick wires and attech one to the block and one to battery negitive

100% the injection pump if you haven't tried a new pmd. These are good trucks and i honestly would love to see you do a mild build with it. With a set of promaxx heads, stud kit, hx35(obtained) and a tune these things are pretty stout for around 280ish hp and mid 550lbs ish of torque. And get really good gas mileage doing so too. They definitely dont make dmax power but definitely are not terrible

😂😂😂😂😂😂 I've seen bone stock 6.5s break the cranks and completely wipe out the block in the process. You ain't getting no 550ibs out of them for very long it's like a 1000+ hp iron block LS with stock internals will they do it short answer is yes. Long answer is yes but it's a matter of when not if they'll blow up.

Truckmaster, it's great to have you back ! Always enjoy watching your show. The old crusty rusty plow truck is a project for sure. But comparatively, you don't have that much into it. Once up and running, you can break even easily. Chop a bunch of that rust off... maybe a flatbed... some 40s... a 4 link front and rear.. coilovers... mud truck... off road rig... truck pull... ummmm. Well, I am sure you will figure something out.... good warm snow plow, lol... which will be handy soon....

My daily driver is a 1995 2500 suburban with a 2000 6.5 ... scat crank, holset hx40 turbo, head studs, main bearing studs and girdle with a 5 position tune...It tows a 10000lb. travel trailer and I push up 20psi of boost... It's not a duramax but it pulls hard... I will never part with it...

i used to do alot of these in perth western australia,you need a tech2 gm scannner at a minimum,alot of people forget to put a resistor in the new PMD,they need to me mounted on an aluminium heatsink about 300mm long,stanadyne put out multiple recall notices on these pumps,they need an intercooler and upping the boost

Those 6.5 are ok driving around town but do not load them. Everyone i owned either threw rods or the crank broke. Had 5 it took a bit for me to learn. Stud the mains it helps alittle. If you turn up the boost. Get ready for carnage

another issue is with the inj pumps is the factory test bench tests the optical sensor last when the pump is warm,the most common failure of this part is when the pump is cold,which puts the engine into limp home mode,oh and also NONE of the factory lift pumps produce the 14psi inj pump inlet pressure,a holley blue is perfect

Hx 35s will go to 48 50 psi if ya really want to. Light years outside of there efficiency range at that point but they’ll go up there. And they whistle so bloody loud it almost goes silent up that high 😂

Neither of my03. Or my 04, 3rd gen rams leak a drop of anything on the driveway, but I have worked to seal everything with top end gaskets and etc to make sure they don't leak anything😅😊❤ it took a bit but it'd nice to not have them dripping anything at all😅❤

Check th fuel injection lift pump that’s mounted on the frame. That’s common besides the PMD that fails. It’s on the driver’s side framerail just below the driver door. It looks like an old fuel filter with 2 wires coming out of it.

Also love the 6.5 content myself. Have a hx40wii turbo on the 6.5 in my 82 k5 and with headstuds have hit 20 psi of boost a couple of times with 17-18 psi being hit most days.

I think it’s worth it to be honest I think they are decent ole engines for what they were intended to do they weren’t much a pulling engine or anything more of a fuel economy engine which they got great mpg 🤷♂️I always kinda liked em lol

it is your injector pump. i have a 94 k1500 and it did the same thing and it was the injector pump. when you change out the pump you need to have a program to set the timing.

6.5's are notorious for having pmd failure even once relocated. Everyone I've talked to that has owned one always kept an extra.

Hey Man, I have a box of parts from my 96 6.5 turbo diesel suburban. I started replacing parts when I had a crazy knock. Turned out to be a balancer pulley with destroyed rubber in front of the harmonic balancer. Anyway, I have the injectors, a turbo, an injection pump, gaskets, PMD and probly more. All used of course except for a new balancer pulley that goes in front of the balancer. You are welcome to them as I sold the truck. Im in Omaha NE if you pass through this way sometime.

one thing i found with pmd they make two different plugs , i put the wrong pmd plug on mine and it kept popping out ! the very worst thing detroit diesel did was let chevy add junk electronics to these ! i had a really nice one with 120k i gave away after putting 3 different pumps in and not a one working right

I still think the vacuum actuator controller thing that the waste gate line runs into is your issue. It’s not reading boost properly and just over fueling like crazy or holding the waste gate fully open. They have a weird way of controlling the waste gate on those things. Or a pmd or optical eye in the pump issue. Not a turbo

Those are really bad for injection pumps an glow plug going out. But other than that you can’t kill them trucks like the 7.3 power smoke

Pmd can cause alot of issue and possible a stuck injector But i got a air in fuel inssue on mine and going to change the turbo sometime because that casues the headgaste problem on them and the lift pump also is junk when they came out and vaccum pump to And other emissions that on it And the way they did the oil pump wiring to if the senor goes bad it wont send power to lift pump Some people wire it to the key and stuff that what the person before me did but i put another 7 psi one because stock tubro

Get the truck hot shut it off remove fuel filter fill it with atf run it for 30 to 60 seconds till it gets to the injection pump and shut it down let it sit a day or so.

Not to mention aftermarket rebuilt injection pumps aren't guaranteed to be great. If factory is good stick with that. Pmd do all types of funky stuff. The grey stanadyne one would be your best option

Can someone help me diagnose loosing fuel pressure on a LBZ duramax, it’s odd because it will start up run fine and I’ll drive an hour and shut it off for 10 min then it lost pressure and I have to prime it again.
