So, funny story. Ants are not usually prolific swimmers. In fact, a lot of ants die if they can't float back to solid ground. But various ant species have developed tricks to survive watery environments, such as building living bridges or rafts and rotating out so that the ant can take a break from drowning. Another trick they use is essentially walking underwater. Ants are able to cling to surfaces underwater, and are fully capable of simply walking down below the water's surface as if it was open air. Some ants go one step further, having small clusters of hair around their bodies that trap small bubbles of air as they go below the surface, giving the ants both a temporary air supply and a diving suit that makes it easier for them to maneuver underwater. This is also how ants typically survive their colonies getting flooded; they create a mass of living bodies that form air pockets, protecting eggs and larvae in flooded chambers until they can be moved.

@@Linogewillkillallofy not to me but I understand to some people it is old news. Diving bell spider are also good swimmers going further than that they're good water breathers. They make their own air bubble which they not only use to eat but also breathe. It's the only known spider that can pretty much stay submerged and not come to the surface for air until those twenty-four hours have passed.

General pointers are: - don't fertilize (with exceptions but that's the more advanced stuff) - never let the pot try out, water frequently (applies to most sundews, all nepenthes, all sarracenia, most pinguicula, most utricularia, all heliamphora, all cephalotus, and all flytraps) - water must be low in minerals (0-100 ppm) - lots of light (10-12 hours artificial light or 4 -6 hours of indirect sunlight unless it's the morning or evening) - don't use soil with fertilizers, sphagnum peat moss works for most.

I feel like a kid again and I just listened to a story from my grandpa with late stage dementia. "Gather round boys and ill tell you a story about mantises and carnivorous plants. It all began in 1912 when the Eskimos crashed at Roswell. I believe the president at the time was a lady by the name of Richard Babcock. The United States was called something different because Sam Franklin hadn't landed on Pluto yet. Anyhow, that there is how mantises interact with carnivorous plants."

They keep the soil healthy enough for us to grow food for ourselves and livestock. They disperse seeds of beneficial plants and flowers and they eat the larvae of insects that we find annoying. You probably know that all ants, like bees, are female. Only a few males are hatched to mate with the queen then killed, but they have wings so...yeah. All the workers are sterile girls, same with bees. And here's a thought to keep you awake at night: ants outnumber us 250 Million to ONE. But weigh 20% as much as us.

I’ve really gotten into plants the past few years after I was given a super old bonsai tree from a neighbor he kept for 30+ years. I didn’t know that bonsai are not a type of tree but a tree purposely kept small. Literally any tree can be made into a bonsai. Anyway, I digress, but since getting involved with plants I’ve been wanting carnivorous plants like Venus flytraps, different kinds of pitcher plants, and sundews. I’ve gotten two different flytraps from separate places and killed both. 😢

Regarding your unfortunate flytraps - you might have made the mistake of thinking they have died around autumn/winter, and you threw them out, right? This is a common mistake that a lot of people make. However, a lot of carnivorous species like this actually NEED to have it's resting stage and it will die down completely and simply go dormant until warmer weather returns. If you keep it in a warmed house, you'll have to make sure to move it to a cooler place so it gets triggered to go to sleep. If it DOESN'T get this resting period once a year, it WILL die! They're funny like that. All you have to do is to keep it moist like usual through it's sleeping phase, as it will reawaken when Spring comes around again. Good luck with your carnivorous journey! Sounds like more research is needed though....although I hope the info I have given you might be enough to pull you through your next attempt. :P Successful gardening is through trial and error, and an awful lot of research. KZbin is great (if you like watching videos) although actual books or other text based info online is also really good. Try again. They can be a challenge, but it feels so good when they flourish for you! I find them almost as fascinating as fungi! :D
