Merry Christmas! I get you. I don't call it a fear of heights, either. I can be in high places, no issues. However, I am afraid of "precarious locations." High places, where there are no safety rails, or barriers that can keep me from falling off. I can get on a twelve story roof, and look down, if there is a four foot or taller parapet to keep me from falling off. I cannot get near the edge of a three story roof, if there is no parapet. It just won't happen.

Jim, I totally understand the fear of falling. I have it. I'm OK on a ladder if I can hold on to something, a wall, even a nail or screw sticking out. So I am impressed that you were able to push past it to get the job done.

I never realized you had any trepidation about climbing up heights before, you did a great job pushing through that Jim. I hope cream head continues to improve with Jess's tender love and care it was so cute seeing her standing in the water without fussing at all. You've got the magic touch! You can slot wood to frame your panels, standard 2×4s and a table or circular saw. Makes it way cheaper and those plastic fittings don't take the uv as well.

Solid colored stain vs. painting and you are less likely to have future flaking because of moisture cycle under those panels. Solid stain won’t flake

Good job pushing past your fear of heights, Jim. I also have a strong fear of heights. In tall buildings I can hardly stand next to a window and look down. But I was a residential window cleaner for a few years during school, and I was surprised how comfortable and fearless I became working on ladders and ledges. I got comfortable working at the top of a 40 foot ladder and hugging the wall on a thirty foot ledge. Little by little I became good at judging what was safe and what was not, and before I knew it I was scrambling up ladders and around ledges on slanted rooftops without thinking much about it. I will always have my fear of heights, but it's all a matter of becoming a good judge of what is solid and safe underneath you. My guess is that by the time you finish your roof and rafter work, you will feel more comfortable and sure of yourself up there.

Hi Jim, If you have a table saw, you can cut some hold downs for the polycarb panels and just use silicone on the ends to seal it up until you can order the good plastic ones.

Hey! In the future, if you have elevated work to do, you should do that while there is a second person available to call an ambulance if you should fall. Ladders are the #1 killer of construction workers and especially transitions from and to them… Stay safe!

Jess is so in her element working on her dream homestead. Working at high heights is scary can Jim find a harness and roping to clamp onto the framing in areas high he's working on? A zipline he can harness himself too would be awesome in the event he slips in order to catch him from falling to the ground. The extra safety measures will help elevate confidence and lower the mild fears of heights.😊 Merry Christmas you two please give one another a hug for me.🌲🎁

I can't say I'm too enthused about being on high structures, but I got used to it on Army obstacle courses, and absailing. I don't think you are afraid of heights, like me you can look at tall things all day. What you are afraid of is Depths, looking down from high points and your rear end starts doing the puckering! Good on you for working through it!

In the greenhouse industry we used a silver Mylar tape which came in ropes of 50 or 100 feet. We taped this on the ends to seal the panels, lasted for decades.

Self reliant homestead and chicken health spa. That was some contented little chook getting her treatments. 👍 I’m the same with heights, had to work in similar conditions looking down into a 20ft drop and you expend so much more energy being all tensed up while working hard. You did great stuff on that greenhouse roof 👏

I get it, Jim! I'm not afraid of heights, e.g. I love roller coasters and thrill rides at theme parks and I enjoy flying in airplanes, but there's a huge difference between being securely strapped into a roller coaster and being high up and relying on my own balance (and my own carpentry skills) to avoid falling. To me this is just a properly honed sense of danger, not an irrational fear at all!

Hahaha as a roofers Son and having to help I knew you had a issue with heights long ago. I sometimes had that issue as well. If you take your time and look around for several minutes look out at the scenery and relax before you start working maybe even eat a sandwich and coffee it will take fear away. They have studied chickens because they have the ability to keep their head still while everything else moves. Our eyes always seek the horrizon and when you have a tilted head you can experience vertigo. Going to chiropractor and beung adjusted in neck and back can also help with virtigo.
@PeggyLeeSebeni19 күн бұрын
You are right to think ahead to focus on safety. Have you considered investing in some scaffolding structures? You both could benefit from increasing your ease of movement & safety. Believe me, speaking from experience. A set of used scaffolding & some extra boards are a lot less costly than 1 misstep that results in a fall. Merry Christmas to you both, & blessings abundant to you always.

I am unsure of your ultimate design, but you SHOULD build an insulated wall between the greenhouse and the house proper or it will be very difficult to heat in the winter or not overheat the house in the summer. It is up to you, but this has been proven by people doing what you are doing, but many years ago. Have fun, keep up the hard work and it will get done! I hope to see it all done, for sure.
