CULVER CITY, California - We recently had the opportunity to visit the set of "Jeopardy!" on a taping day and got to talk to the iconic host of the show, Alex Trebek.
Trebek allowed us to chronicle his entire daily routine, from his morning production meeting with the "Jeopardy!" staff, to sitting in the makeup chair, to the actual taping of the shows. Five episodes are filmed on each taping day, and there are approximately six taping days every month.
We got to interview Trebek in a few different settings, but we also got to record his interaction with the studio audience. During each commercial break, Trebek takes questions from the audience. It's during these segments that you'll get to see a side of the iconic host that you rarely see on the show itself.

His retirement involved hosting Jeopardy to an extent. If Alex Trebek wanted me to understand that some people have their own version of retirement I would have to get used to it and it’s not just because of TV.

He's totally opposite from his stuffy, know-it-all elite TV persona. Very warm, funny and engaging. The fact he said "thank you" to the make-up lady indicates he really treats all people with thoughtfulness. Most stars don't even speak to the crew, unless they are barking orders at them or cussing them out. Trebek seems like a decent guy, far beyond needing others to polish his ego.

Alex is amazing to have hosted a show that has been that successful for so long, while the television formats all over have change so much. "Jeopardy!" is one of the few holdovers from the great game show era that began in the mid-seventies. There's nothing finer than information and knowledge. Thanks for providing so much of them to Alex and the entire crew of "Jeopardy!"

I was on the show in 2012. He’s America’s cranky, but cool dad. During commercial breaks, when he’s not answering questions from the audience, he sings to himself, but he’s wearing a mike, so everyone can sing it. I was rocking a decent jewfro then, and he sang to himself how I had the same hair he had in the ‘70s. That was fun.

Caged the only way it will work is, the new host has to be awesome enough to usher in their own new era. As you were mentioning for example, Price is Right. They picked Drew Carey, a guy who had hosted shows before and demonstrated great charisma and poise. A strong enough character to move from a "Bob Barker era" to the "Drew Carey" era.

Had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Trebek back in the early 2000's at the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas. He came through my vendor booth, asking some very specific questions about plasma display technology. The whole time we were talking, I kept thinking to myself "I know this guy", but I couldn't figure out from where. I had to sneak a look at his badge before I realized why his voice sounded so familiar, and then it all clicked. It was during that brief period where he had shaved off his mustache, before growing it back again (anyone here remember when he finally shaved it off for keeps?), so he really did look completely anonymous at the time. Nice guy.
@skahler
@skahler 5 жыл бұрын
Ha! It's no wonder. I feel like I could recognize Trebek anywhere. That being said if he just suddenly showed up at my booth I'd probably be completely confused for a bit. That's a crazy and funny story lol. Reminds me of that time I met Justin Long and Key from Key and Peele in the same night on New Years. Had a rich friend who got us into his local neighborhood bar, which happened to have been rented out by the SNL crew that night. I was hammered. I literally hugged the dude from Key and Peele, and later found out he had followed through with his divorce that day lol.

Alex Trebek's success has been earned every single step of the way--he started out working for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) in Toronto as an announcer doing station breaks-he moved up to doing short news stories and then he was asked to do a high school quiz show called "Reach for the Top"--it was then that his friend fellow Canadian the late Alan Thicke had him audition for a weekday game show for NBC called "The Wizard of Odds"--he got the job although the show didn't last long--the brass at NBC were impressed enough that they offered him further announcing jobs (High Rollers, Concentration etc)--then in the 1980's Merv Griffith was looking to revive Jeopardy and hired Mr. Trebek and the rest is history

These commenters below who call Mr. Trebek rude, arrogant, snobbish etc. are quite wrong and are ignorant of the facts. Having been a contestant on the show I can tell you that he treated the players with notable courtesy, respect and kindness, and sympathy to the two who didn't win. They walked us past his dressing room and the door was open. There were many, many suits hanging there, but all in muted shades. He dresses that way because he doesn't wish to call attention to himself at the expense of the players' moment in the spotlight. He was pleasant and charming throughout the time I was around him.

why would they pause the game during "commericial breaks" its an edited show, its not a live show
@3nails4you

Maybe to let Alex and the contestants take a break for a few minutes.

Most pre-taped shows do that to a) have a pause to insert a commercial that doesn't seem out of place, and b) to give the players, audience, and host intermissions between rounds. It's especially handy in this game when the contestants need to make wagers.

Obscure Topics for a $1,000 Alex and when Weird Al made a parody song about Jeopardy you know a show is part of pop culture. Trebek has just the right mix of a bit of humor/lite touch which kept the show entertaining without a lot of gimmicks that others use to make winning seem more about luck than skill.

I always suspected the new Jeopardy was born either out of the Greg Kihn song or Weird Al's Parody.

Spent some time with Mr. Trebek a few years back. Company I worked for had him come in to meet and greet some of our best customers. Probably spent about 36 hours on and off with him on the first visit (including an hour 1:1 in the car from the airport) and for 24 hours on his second visit. From that visit I feel I can say he is as nice and genuine as you see on screen. Not to mention smart, personable, a great conversationalist and a very hard worker. I don't recall him making one demand the entire time, except that we put his room under his assistant's name so the public wouldn't be able to ring his suite, which is more than reasonable (though we'd have listed him as anonymous even without him asking). He was so super gracious to all his fans and wouldn't leave a room until he had a chance to greet everyone no matter how far behind his allotted work time was. A true class act. Oh and he changed suits between our afternoon and evening events. How anyone could keep their clothes so perfect after being on a plane is beyond me.

My Sister loves this show. I always tease her about the fact that when Alex reads the questions and the daily double comes up ...he enthusiastically says "Answer" has if he knew ahead of time it was the daily double. Now I know that he does know ahead of time.

I've never met him, but according to this video, he just seems like a nice lovable ol' poop, I wouldn't necessarily consider him grumpy, maybe a bit serious, but it works for him. He seems very down to earth and likable. On a commercial for classic concentration in 1987, they called him, "the most huggable host.". Just saying ☺️

This is the kind of love I pray for. To be married to a Real Man. Class, kindness, Intelligent, style, loyal, humble, responsible, role model and loved by many. He reminds me of my father. RIP. I am so confused in feeling because I remember my mother making me sit in the kitchen while she cooked dinner and I watched Jeopardy and watching how to make mashed potatoes, broccoli and steak. Me, my step dad and my mom, grandmom downstairs, then ate dinner during Wheel Of Fortune. South Jersey time slot. I am now 39 and I would watch episodes, still get the answers wrong except for Kids Jeopardy..lol...I ain't the only one...DONT EVEN TRY IT. Lmao...He maybe Canadian, but he is an American on a different level of the Description of a Man. All we have left is Wheel of Fortune..Much Respect.. .Class99Jeopardybefore dinner...
